SEO for HVAC companies. Your customers type aircon.
You call it HVAC. The person sweating through the first hot week calls it the aircon, and searches for aircon repair, ducted air conditioning and split system installation. Target only the American word and you're writing for the wrong country. We build your visibility in your customers' words, and we build it before the season turns.

One trade, two dictionaries, each for its own audience
Commercial pages use the trade's words and residential pages use the customer's. HVAC is an American word, and much of the SEO advice for this trade comes from the US, where homeowners really say it; Australian homeowners mostly don't. Facility managers, builders and tender documents still use it, so aim it at them.
The right-hand column is how homeowners commonly phrase it; check volumes for your own area in Google Keyword Planner before rewriting a page.
The gap goes deeper than nouns. The trade thinks in systems: compressors, refrigerant, zoning, capacity. The customer thinks in symptoms: it's blowing warm air, upstairs never cools, the unit is dripping, what size aircon for a four-bedroom house. Each is a search made the moment someone needs you, and each deserves a plain answer on your site, including the cases where the answer is a cheap fix rather than a new unit. That list is your content programme, and it's where SEO for HVAC businesses in Australia should start.
The heatwave rankings are decided in September
Because rankings take months to build and aircon repair searches bunch into a few hot days. Plumbing failures are random, so plumbing demand is fairly steady. Aircon failures cluster: every neglected unit in a suburb gets its first hard run in the same scorching week.
Build window for summer
Cooling peak
Build window for winter heating (southern cities)
Heating peak in the south
Most owners think about SEO in the January week a heatwave is feeding their competitors, which is the worst moment to start. Google's SEO starter guide says some changes show within hours and others take several months. The business in the map results on the first scorcher earned that spot in October, with profile work, reviews gathered job by job and pages already answering summer's questions.
The researcher, the sweater and the switcher need different pages
One generic services page can't serve someone comparing ducted systems for spring and someone whose unit died an hour ago. A page tuned for one pushes the other away, so the site splits them.
Installmonths out
The install page
"ducted vs split system running costs"
A big decision made slowly. Comparison guides, sizing help, brand questions and honest running-cost answers win this buyer long before they ask for quotes.
Breakdown41 degrees
The emergency page
"aircon stopped working today"
No patience and little price sensitivity. The page answers in seconds: availability, service area, licence, phone number. The first credible result wins the job.
Switchweighing it up
The replacement page
"replace ducted gas heating with reverse cycle"
A voluntary switch, so this buyer reads carefully. A clear page on options, discounts and running costs, written before they start looking, is the one they find.
All three feed the same Business Profile, and every completed job can become a review.
When every phone in town rings at once, and half the callers only want a price
Missed calls and price collectors, and the website can fix part of both. The calls arrive while your techs are on roofs and in ceilings, and the install enquiries that follow are full of people collecting numbers.
The call that rings out
A caller with a dead unit at 39 degrees rarely leaves a message; they try the next name on the map. Set up a missed-call text that says when someone will ring back. Put today's real wait at the top of the breakdown page, such as "booked until Thursday, ring for a phone triage", and change it as the week moves. Use Google's special hours for a real extended day, and leave "24/7" off everything unless somebody really answers at 3am.
The quote that goes nowhere
A ducted quote can cost a technician half a day on site. Publish "from" figures for your common installs, taken from your own price book, so people with a split-system budget sort themselves out. Ask on the form for storeys, rooms to condition, roof space access and whether ducts already exist. Some businesses charge for a design visit on large systems and credit it when the job goes ahead; if you do, say so on the page.
The customer has a version of the same problem. Two supply-and-install prices for a split system often cover different work: one includes a standard back-to-back install, the other allows for a longer pipe run, a dedicated circuit, a new isolator and taking the old unit away, and the homeowner usually can't tell which is which. A page that lists exactly what yours covers, and what costs extra, makes your price easier to compare fairly.
Victoria's all-electric rules, and why your city writes your keyword list
In Victoria the move off gas is set for new homes and hot water. Gas space heating in existing homes was left alone: the Victorian Government said on 24 June 2025 there are no changes to heating for owner occupiers. Owners who choose to swap still search before they ring anyone.
- Jan 2024No mains gas connection on new planning permits for homes, apartments and residential subdivisions (amendment VC250).
- Jan 2027All new Victorian homes all-electric, with electric heating and cooling from day one.
- Mar 2027Gas hot water at end of life replaced with an efficient electric system such as a heat pump. Gas space heating in existing homes is unchanged.
- OptionalVictorian Energy Upgrades discounts for owners who choose to replace a gas space heater with reverse cycle.

Cooling-led north
Brisbane's mild winters make the north a cooling-led market where aircon terms run most of the year. One build window, before summer.
Dual-season south
Melbourne, Canberra and Hobart have real winters, so ducted heating searches carry weight, and evaporative cooling suits the drier southern and inland summers. Two build windows a year, plus switch-over pages where the Victorian rules apply. That's the core of HVAC SEO in Melbourne.
What an aircon campaign produces, written up like a service report
Everything is built in customer language, timed to your city's seasons, and owned by you.
The licence deserves its own line. Handling refrigerant legally requires a Refrigerant Handling Licence under the ARCtick scheme run by the Australian Refrigeration Council, which says it carries out more than 8,000 audits of licence holders each year (arctick.org, checked 4 October 2026). Customers can look a licence up on the same site, so put your number on every page for the careful buyer weighing you against a cheaper unlicensed operator.

Questions from heating and cooling businesses
Why do HVAC companies need specialist SEO?
Because this trade has a language problem no other trade has. You call yourself an HVAC company; your residential customers rarely type HVAC. SEO for HVAC companies here starts by translating the strategy into the words Australians search, then timing it to the seasons.
Should we target the word HVAC at all?
Yes, where it belongs: the commercial side. Facility managers, builders and tender writers say HVAC and mechanical services, so those terms belong on commercial pages. Residential pages should say aircon, air conditioning, ducted, split system and evaporative cooling.
When should an aircon business invest in SEO?
In the off-season. Aircon failures cluster in the first hot week, and Google's SEO starter guide says changes can take hours or several months to show. Start in spring for summer, or late summer for winter heating, so you're already ranking when the spike arrives.
What does SEO for an air conditioning business include?
A Business Profile built for aircon searches in your service area with reviews building underneath; install pages and emergency pages split by mindset; seasonal content built before each peak; and the trust layer, with your ARCtick licence, brands and warranties visible.
How much does SEO for an HVAC company cost?
Starter is $500 a month for one service area, Growth $900 when you need install and emergency paths plus seasonal content, and Performance $1,500 for competitive cities or commercial-plus-residential work. No setup fee, no lock-in. Our reports split enquiries by job type so you can test whether it pays.
We run one van from home. Will Google show our house on the map?
No, if the profile is set up as a service-area business. Google's Business Profile guidelines say a business that visits its customers should hide its address and list the areas it serves instead, kept within about two hours of driving time from where it is based. You still verify with your real address; customers just don't see it. Don't use a PO box or a mailbox service to look like a shopfront, because the guidelines don't accept those addresses.
Do you cover suburb-level searches?
Yes, through a Business Profile anchored to your real service area, suburb pages only where a suburb justifies one, and reviews from local jobs. Not a hundred thin suburb pages, which Google's spam policies treat as doorway abuse.
What should we look for in an agency for this trade?
Run the vocabulary test: count how often an agency's own page says aircon, ducted or split system. Then ask which words your residential customers type, when they'd build for your summer, and what Victoria's rules mean for your heating pages.
