SEO for Toowoomba businesses whose customers drive an hour to get there

The hospital, the specialist, the big purchase: the Darling Downs drives up the range for them, and plans the trip in Google first.

Google even suggests "dalby to toowoomba hospital". The catch: Google's map results lean towards businesses near the searcher, and someone typing in Dalby or Warwick is more than an hour from Ruthven Street.

Boltly helps Toowoomba businesses win those planned trips as well as the searches in town. The 2021 Census counted 142,163 people in the urban area; the council area held 186,276 people and 17,994 businesses in June 2025, and 70.3% of workers drove themselves to work, against 52.7% nationally.

Drive times into the city centre

Highfields is about 16 minutes from the CBD, Dalby and Warwick about 70, Brisbane just under two hours. For search, the shape counts: one ring of towns within half an hour and a second at about an hour and ten.

Google's suggestions for trips out of the city trace the same routes, to Warwick, Dalby, Goondiwindi and Brisbane Airport. If your customers make one of these drives, the drive belongs on your website.

Near and far

The search in town and the search before the trip

Relevance, distance and popularity are what Google's help pages say its local results mainly rest on. Someone in Harristown searching "electrician" is close to plenty of businesses, so distance and reviews decide it. Someone in Dalby planning a day in Toowoomba is far from all of them, so relevance takes over: the page that best answers what they need wins the visit, even if the map shows a Dalby business first.

The nearby search

Won by the profile

Typed in the city, often for something needed today. The Google Business Profile does most of the work: the right category, true hours, photos and a steady flow of recent reviews.

  • electrician after hours
  • electrician prices
The planned trip

Won by the website

Typed in Dalby or Warwick days ahead, for something they can't get at home. They compare, so pages need detail: what you do, what it costs where you can say, how long it takes, where to park, whether they need a referral.

A cafe on Margaret Street lives on the first kind; a specialist clinic or a farm machinery dealer lives on the second. If you're in health care, SEO for healthcare covers what patients travelling in look for.

Service areas

Google's two-hour line, drawn from Toowoomba

If you travel to customers, Google Business Profile lets you set a service area, and its guidelines ask you to keep it within "about two hours of driving time" of your base. From Toowoomba that takes in Dalby, Warwick and, on a clear run, Brisbane.

Inside about two hours

  • ~30 to 35 minOakey, Pittsworth, Gatton and Highfields
  • ~70 minDalby and Warwick
  • ~107 minBrisbane, on a clear run. Traffic often pushes it past two hours.

Outside it

  • ~2 h 50Goondiwindi, west on the border
  • ~4 h 30Roma, further out on the Warrego Highway

The common slip runs the other way: businesses leave the service area at the city boundary and never mention the towns they drive to every week. Name them in the profile, and on the website say what you do there. Give a town its own page only when you have something real to put on it, such as regular work, a pick-up point or a project you can describe. Pages that only swap the town name are what Google's spam policies call doorway pages.

What a customer an hour away can cost you

The quote that costs you a morning

Driving to Dalby or Warwick to measure up a job that was only ever a price check means two hours or more on the road before any work is done. Put a starting price or typical range on the service page, say whether there's a travel charge past the first ring and how it's credited if they go ahead, and ask for photos, budget and timing on the enquiry form.

The call you miss on the Warrego Highway

A caller who rings out while you're driving to Oakey usually rings the next listing. Set up a missed-call text back, keep the profile hours honest rather than "open 24 hours", and add an enquiry form a planned-trip customer can fill in at night.

The directory that answers before you do

Searches like "builder Toowoomba" often show lead marketplaces and top-ten lists above the businesses themselves, and some sell the enquiry to several trades at once. If you buy those leads, work out the cost per job won, not per lead. Your own pages for the jobs and towns you cover, plus reviews that name the town, send enquiries that go only to you.
