Addresses

Write the state every time

Write the town, state and postcode together, every time, because Google's suggestions include "is mildura in victoria or nsw". Australia Post lists only Mildura and Mildura West under 3500; Irymple is 3498, Red Cliffs 3496, Merbein and its neighbours 3505, and Buronga and Mourquong, over the river, are 2739 NSW.

That goes for the profile, the website footer and every directory listing. If you're in Irymple, say Irymple rather than borrowing Mildura 3500. And if you work on both banks from one base, use one address and set your service area to the towns you really visit on each side.

Customers on the other bank search for their own town

Someone in Buronga types "Buronga" and someone in Mildura types "Mildura", and Google treats them as two places. If you really serve both, a page about your work on the other side of the river is legitimate: how long the trip over the bridge takes, the jobs you've done there, and anything that works differently in that state. What isn't legitimate is a second address on the other bank that nobody works from. Google's guidelines don't allow a profile at a location you don't operate from, and a fake one puts the real listing at risk.

Distance

Every capital is a long way off, so your competition is down the street

For anything done in person, a Mildura customer isn't weighing you against a Melbourne firm 550 km away. They're choosing between the handful of local names Google shows on the map.

That makes the basics count: a complete profile with the right category, real photos, accurate hours and a steady stream of reviews. Google's own help page for business profiles names three things local results mainly rest on: relevance, distance and popularity. Your shop stays where it is, so work on the other two. Relevance comes from the right category and a page for each service; popularity comes from reviews and from mentions on local sites.

When people do travel, it's a long trip, so they fly or take the coach: Mildura Airport lists Qantas and Rex, the council calls Melbourne less than an hour away by air, and V/Line runs coaches to Bendigo via Swan Hill. If your profile is suspended, you vanish from a small map

With only a handful of local names on the map, losing your listing for a week hands the work to the rest. Most suspensions follow something on the profile itself: extra words in the business name, an address you don't trade from, or several big edits at once. Fix the cause first, then appeal once through Google's appeals tool with documents that match the profile's name and address, such as your business registration, a licence or a utility bill. Google's help page says the evidence form has to be submitted within 60 minutes of opening it, so have the files ready first. Don't open a new profile while the appeal is under review.
