"Is Geelong in Melbourne?" is one of the first things Google suggests when you type the city's name. It isn't: Geelong is its own city with its own council, about 74 km away by road. But its airport calls itself Melbourne Avalon, its trains run to Melbourne, and plenty of Melbourne firms list Geelong in their service areas. A Geelong business wins by making its Geelong address, suburb and customers impossible to miss.

Each is a live Google suggestion, and each answer decides whether a searcher sees you as local or as "somewhere near Melbourne".
Is Geelong in Melbourne?
NoGeelong is a separate city on Corio Bay, governed by the City of Greater Geelong. The 2021 Census counted 180,239 people in the Geelong urban centre and 271,057 across the council area.
So write "Geelong" in your business description and page titles, not "Melbourne's west" or "greater Melbourne".
Is Geelong regional?
Depends who asksTrains are run by V/Line, Victoria's regional network, not the Melbourne metro system. Grant, visa and loan programs each draw "regional" differently, so check the rules of the one you are applying for.
So if you sell to people who care, such as visa applicants or new arrivals, answer the question on your own page, with the program named.
Does Geelong have an airport?
Yes, branded MelbourneAvalon Airport is about 24 km from central Geelong by road. It lists flights to Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide, the Gold Coast and Bali, booked through Jetstar.
So a transfer, car hire or accommodation business should name both: "Avalon Airport" and the drive time to Geelong.

Melbourne firms can list Geelong. They can't copy your address.
In Google's own help page, local results are "mainly based on relevance, distance and popularity". Anyone can write "we service Geelong" on a page, which helps with relevance at best. Distance is measured from your real address, and popularity comes from how well known you are: reviews, links and mentions. That is where a business based in Geelong is ahead.

When a "Geelong" listing on the map doesn't belong to a Geelong business
Some map results for Geelong searches sit at a mail-forwarding address or a shared desk, run by a firm based elsewhere. Google's guidelines say a virtual office isn't eligible for a Business Profile and a co-working desk only counts if it has signage, takes customers and is staffed in opening hours. If you find one in your category, report it from the listing in Google Maps, and keep screenshots. Don't copy the trick with a second address of your own; that is how real businesses get suspended.

The train line to Melbourne runs both ways
V/Line's Geelong line stops at Little River, Lara, Corio, North Shore, North Geelong, Geelong, South Geelong, Marshall and Waurn Ponds on its way to Melbourne. Port Phillip Ferries sails between Geelong and Docklands, and the Spirit of Tasmania now leaves from 136 Corio Quay Road, North Geelong.
Some Geelong residents work in Melbourne and search for local services from a city desk, typing "geelong" on purpose. Others mostly drive: 58.6% of working residents went by car on Census day 2021, against 49.9% across Victoria.

Australia Post gives Geelong, South Geelong and Newtown 3220, Geelong West 3218, East Geelong 3219 and North Geelong 3215. Across the river, Belmont, Highton, Grovedale and Waurn Ponds all share 3216, and Armstrong Creek is 3217. Corio and Norlane are 3214, and Lara, about 17 km out by road, is 3212.

Your street is too new for Google Maps
On a street Google Maps doesn't show yet, customers and couriers get sent to the wrong corner and Google may struggle to place your profile. Report the missing road through Google Maps, drag the profile pin to your real driveway or entrance, and name the nearest established street or landmark in your directions. If customers never come to you, set the profile up as a service-area business with the address hidden. Check again after a few weeks; map fixes aren't instant.
