SEO Canberra: Search for the Department and the Town Centre | Boltly
Economy one: the department

SEO Canberra for a city with two economies

At the 2021 Census, 17.1% of working ACT residents were in central government administration and 5.8% in defence, against about 1% nationally for each. That economy buys through procurement officers and prime contractors who search for a capability, then read your site with a professional's suspicion. A three-page brochure site is easy to pass over.

Updated

Economy two: the town centre

The other Canberra needs a dentist, a plumber and a physio, and it often doesn't know anyone to ask.

Around the public service runs an ordinary local economy spread over separate town centres. A family that transferred in last month searches "near me" from Gungahlin or Tuggeranong and picks from the map. That buyer is won with a Business Profile, reviews and honest service areas, not capability statements.

Most Canberra businesses sit mainly on one side of this page; some sit on both. Working out which is the first job, done remotely from Melbourne before any money is spent.

The census line

Where ACT residents work, against the national share

Four numbers from the 2021 Census explain why a plan written for another capital misreads Canberra.

Central government administration and defence together employ more than a fifth of working residents. Computer system design runs at twice the national share. These are B2G markets, where the buyer is a person inside an agency or a prime contractor, and the search is for a capability rather than a suburb.

The money follows. Median weekly household income in the ACT was $2,373 at the same Census, against $1,746 nationally. Local shops still compete with national retailers shipping in, so a high-income market is not an easy one.

Professionals make up 31.5% of employed ACT residents and managers 17.9%, both well above the national figures. Clients of law firms, accountants and advisers here read before they ring and compare expertise, not price.

AusTender publishes the contract; a search decides who gets approached

Wherever a Commonwealth buyer has a choice of who to approach, a person researches suppliers first. The Commonwealth Procurement Rules add their extra requirements only for buys at or above set thresholds, and the Department of Finance runs whole-of-government panels such as the Management Advisory Services Panel.

A need is defined

An agency or prime contractor needs a capability: a security assessment, a change program, a fit-out.

The route is set

Value thresholds and panels shape how the buy proceeds.

Someone searches

Where there is a choice of who to approach, a person looks for suppliers with that capability.

Your site is read

Capability pages, credentials, clearances and evidence are checked before anyone makes contact.

So SEO for a government-facing firm looks more like publishing than marketing. Capability content with real depth, credentials and clearances stated plainly, evidence that survives scrutiny, and the technical base that lets any of it rank. For a second opinion on an existing plan, see SEO consulting in Canberra.

File note · one buyer, one risk

Most of your work comes from one department. What if it stops?

Contracts end and a renewal is never promised. A supplier whose every enquiry comes through government has no cushion, and a hospital or university buyer won't recognise itself on a site written only for procurement officers.

  • Write each capability page for two readers: the procurement officer, and the operations manager at a university, hospital or company buying the same thing. Describe the problem solved, not just the agency served.
  • List the sectors outside government you have really worked in, with the kind of job done, so the site doesn't read as government-only.
  • Tag every enquiry by buyer type each month (department, prime contractor, private), so you see the mix shift before the revenue does.
  • Ask private clients for a review or a written reference you can name, since a panel listing says nothing to them.

Five town centres, five separate local packs

Google builds a local pack from where the searcher is standing and which businesses are near them. Canberra's separate centres split a market into pieces: a physio that ranks well in Phillip can be missing in Gungahlin, because the competing set changes completely. Checking your ranking from your own office shows you one pack and hides the rest.

2601

Civic

The city centre around London Circuit. Offices and venues here are searched from across the territory, so organic pages matter as much as the pack.

Local SEO Canberra page
2616 / 2617

Belconnen

Australia Post lists two codes, and 2617 also serves the University of Canberra. Check which your address really uses before you build citations.

2606

Woden

The Woden centre sits in Phillip. People search "Woden" while the address says Phillip, so name both on the profile and pages.

SEO Phillip
2900

Tuggeranong

The town centre is in Greenway. A Civic ranking means little here, so a southern trade or clinic needs its own suburb list and local reviews.

2912

Gungahlin

At the northern end of the city. A clinic here should name Gungahlin and the nearby suburbs it really serves, not just "Canberra".

Braddon2612

Venues found on a phone minutes before someone walks in; hours and photos matter most.

Kingston2604

Inner-south hospitality and services; our SEO Kingston page has more.

Manuka2603

The precinct is in Griffith. Searches use Manuka, addresses use Griffith; carry both.

Dickson2602

An inner-north service and dining centre where reviews and hours decide most choices.

Barton2600

Shares a code with Canberra itself. Searches here lean towards capabilities wanted by government buyers.

Fyshwick2609

Same code as Canberra Airport. Trade and supply buyers search for a product, and many come from outside the ACT.

Mitchell2911

Its own postcode on Australia Post's list. If you work there, name it in the service area rather than assuming Gungahlin covers it.

Queanbeyan2620 NSW

Across the border in New South Wales. A Canberra trade working there should list it by name as a service area.

Postcodes: Australia Post postcode search, read 4 October 2026.

Across the border · NSW

Customers in Queanbeyan search for Queanbeyan, not Canberra

Queanbeyan is in New South Wales, under Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council, postcode 2620. People there type their own town's name, so a Fyshwick trade whose pages only say "Canberra" can be passed over by a customer just across the border.

  • Add Queanbeyan by name to your profile's service areas. Google allows up to 20 service areas, by city or postcode.
  • If you do enough work there, publish one Queanbeyan page with jobs done there, written for that town rather than copied from the Canberra page.
  • Check that your licence or registration covers work in NSW as well as the ACT, and say so on that page. Each side has its own regulator, so confirm with them rather than assume.
  • Don't open a second Business Profile at a Queanbeyan address nobody staffs. Google's guidelines rule out virtual offices.

Arrivals and departures

Part of Canberra's word-of-mouth network is always packing boxes

Public servants transfer, Parliament House staffers follow the political cycle and defence personnel rotate through postings, so some of this year's buyers didn't live here last year.

They have no barber, no accountant, no favourite Thai place and nobody to ask, so they search. In a settled market a business can coast on referrals for years. In Canberra, some of the people who would have recommended you have just left, and the people replacing them start from a blank list.

Those flows are rounded estimates for a single quarter, but they show the size of the turnover: thousands of people in each direction, every few months.

For a business that ranks, that turnover is useful: the city keeps sending new people to whoever Google shows them.

Which side are you on?

Six ACT industries, sorted by the economy they sell into

Every business needs technical foundations, content, local signals and authority; the weighting changes. A Barton consultancy selling to a department can almost ignore the Map Pack; a Tuggeranong mechanic is the reverse. Getting the mix wrong wastes the budget, so our Canberra SEO services start with a question about your buyer.

Government suppliers

Economy one

Capability pages a procurement officer can check, panels and clearances listed plainly, and crawl problems fixed so the pages can be found.

Departments and residents both hire lawyers and accountants. Each practice area gets a page signed by the person who does that work, and each office that really exists gets a profile.

Patients new to the city choose from scratch, so the local pack decides a lot. The National Law (s133) rules out advertising testimonials about the clinical side of regulated health services, so reviews can't stand in as clinical proof. General information, not legal advice.

Measured by: calls and quote forms by area

Before we change anything we write down where you appear for your main searches in each centre you serve, such as Belconnen or Woden, and how many calls and forms you get. Each monthly report compares against that record, including the parts that didn't move.

How the work proceeds

Brief, plan, build, prove: the minute we'd put to you

Canberra buys professionally, even when it's buying a haircut, so our scope comes in writing, in order, before anything begins.

Minute: proposed SEO workFor decision by you

  1. Record the starting position

Where you rank across your centres and searches today, and what competitors are doing better. An SEO audit covers this.

  2. Decide which economy pays

Department, town centre or both. The plan, deliverables and price are written down before you commit.

  3. Fix the foundations

Speed, crawl and structure through technical SEO, plus the profile work, so everything built later can rank.

  4. Build for the reader

Capability pages or centre pages depending on your buyer, written for a person checking you out.

  5. Earn credibility

Links and mentions that make a Canberra business credible to Google and to the person reading.

  6. Report against the record

Monthly, including whatever didn't move and what we'll do about it.

AI answers use the same ranking

Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode are rooted in its core ranking and quality systems. A page must be indexed and able to show with a snippet to be used.

Nothing extra to buy

Google says llms.txt files and special markup do nothing for its search, and names the Business Profile as a route for local details. No one can promise a mention. Our AI search page has more.

We don't rent a virtual address in Barton to call ourselves a Canberra SEO agency, and you should be wary of anyone who does. If you leave, you take the work with you; nothing proprietary holds your site.

Questions

Tenders, town centres and choosing who to hire

Which SEO agency is best for a Canberra business?

No honest answer names a single winner, because the right choice depends on which of Canberra's two economies you sell into. A firm chasing Commonwealth work needs capability content a procurement officer will believe; a Gungahlin clinic needs the Map Pack and reviews. Ask any agency which economy it has worked in, ask to see the plan before you pay, and treat "top" lists with care until you know who published them.

How much does SEO cost for a Canberra business?

Ours runs at $500 a month for one town centre, $900 for several, and $1,500 for competitive or government-facing categories. The actual figure comes in writing after the free audit, with no setup fee and no lock-in contract.

Can SEO help me win Australian Government work?

It can help you get considered. Where a buyer chooses who to approach, a person researches suppliers, and a thin site is easy to pass over. It doesn't win tenders. General information, not procurement advice.

How do I compare Canberra SEO companies?

Three tests. Would their page read the same with Canberra swapped for Perth? Would they treat a government supplier and a suburban clinic the same way? Will they show you a baseline and the areas that moved, rather than a wall of logos? A Canberra SEO company failing any of these hasn't looked closely.

How long does SEO take in Canberra?

Google's SEO starter guide says some changes show within hours and others take several months. A profile fix in Gungahlin can register quickly; capability content takes longer. We record your position in month one and report against it.

Is local SEO different from SEO in Canberra?

Local SEO targets the Map Pack and near-me searches in a town centre, leaning on your Business Profile, reviews and citations. Broader SEO can mean ranking in ordinary results across the ACT or nationally, which matters if your buyer is a department rather than a neighbour. Our local SEO service covers the first in detail.

Are you based in Canberra?

No. Boltly is a Melbourne-based business and works with Canberra businesses remotely. Your rankings depend on your business's location, pages and reviews, not ours. Email hello@boltly.com.au or ring 0468 147 271.

How can I tell what my SEO agency actually did this month?

Ask for the same thing a department would want from a contractor: a dated log of changes with the address of every page edited or published, every technical fix, and every link earned with the page it sits on. Then check it yourself. Search Console shows clicks and the searches behind them, Google Analytics shows organic visits and enquiries, and new pages should appear in your sitemap. A report that looks the same every month and holds only ranking screenshots is a warning sign.

Can you guarantee a ranking in Canberra?

No. Google sets positions, not agencies, so a guaranteed ranking is either meaningless small print or a sign of tactics that will cost you later. We commit to defined work each month, a recorded baseline and reporting plain enough to see which centres moved and which didn't.

Department or town centre?

Tell us who you sell to, and we'll show you where you rank today and which Canberra searches you could take first, in writing.
