SEO for Townsville businesses whose customers travel in

Townsville is where North Queensland comes for the things a small town can't offer. The hospital takes patients from Cape York to Mount Isa, the airport flies to Cloncurry and Longreach, and the Inlander train runs in from the west twice a week. Plenty of people looking you up are planning a trip, and they need different answers from a local.

Boltly sets up your Google Business Profile, service pages and reviews for both kinds of customer. We're a Melbourne-based business with a 10-person team, working for Townsville clients remotely.

Why they come

A hospital, a university, an airport and a train from the west

Four things pull people into Townsville from hundreds of kilometres away, and each sends a different visitor to Google with a different question.

Douglas QLD 4814

Townsville University Hospital

The health service calls it the only tertiary referral centre in North Queensland. It treats patients from Cape York and the Torres Strait Islands, and west to Mount Isa and the Gulf of Carpentaria. The same page links to the Patient Travel Subsidy Scheme for people who have to travel to get there.

Google suggests: townsville hospital address, townsville hospital map, townsville hospital visiting hours

Bebegu Yumba campus, Douglas

James Cook University

JCU says its Townsville campus has around 10,500 students, more than 1,500 of them from overseas, on bushland about 13 km out of the city. A new group arrives every year and has to find a GP, a mechanic, a rental and somewhere to eat, usually by searching.

What they need from you: distance from campus, student prices, hours outside lectures

Nine destinations listed

Townsville Airport

The airport's own site lists flights to Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Cairns, Mackay, Darwin, Mount Isa, Cloncurry and Longreach. RAAF Base Townsville works alongside it, and the Air Force says the base supports communities from Cooktown in the north to Longreach in the west.

Google suggests: townsville to brisbane flights, townsville to melbourne flights

977 km, about 21 hours

The Inlander

Queensland Rail Travel runs two return services a week between Townsville and Mount Isa, leaving Townsville on Wednesdays and Saturdays and stopping at Charters Towers, Hughenden and Cloncurry on the way. Its own page mentions riders heading in to watch their team play in Townsville.

What they need from you: walking or taxi distance from the station, opening hours that suit a two-day visit

Freight brings people too. The Port of Townsville describes itself as northern Australia's largest container and automotive port, and the country's leading exporter of copper, zinc, lead, sugar, fertiliser and molasses. Crews, contractors and drivers who arrive with that trade search for the same things visitors do: a feed, a bed, a part, a repair.

How far they come

What a customer from Ayr or Mount Isa needs to read before they set off

Hours, parking and how to book: someone driving 90 minutes from Ingham doesn't want to arrive and find you shut or full. The questions change with distance, and the page should change with them.

Coming fromBy roadDriveWhat they're likely planningPut this on your page

If you travel to customers, Google's Business Profile guidelines say your service area shouldn't extend beyond about two hours of driving time from where you're based. From Townsville that takes in Ayr, Ingham and Charters Towers. Bowen and the towns further out are better served by a page that explains how you work with people who travel to you.

A Townsville Google Business Profile carries your hours, category and service area; a service page carries the trip detail. If you also serve the coast to the south or north, our pages on SEO in Mackay and SEO in Cairns look at those cities on their own terms.

A worked example

Rewriting one listing for the family that drove up from Ingham

Take a made-up motel in Douglas, a few minutes from the hospital and the university. The rewrite answers the questions a family has the night before a long drive to an appointment.

The rewrite names Douglas, the hospital and JCU, the places people already search for, states what a traveller checks first, and asks guests to say in their review why they came. A review that says "close to the hospital for my dad's surgery" speaks to the next family better than any line you could write.

The same approach works for a tyre shop on the way in from Charters Towers, a cafe near the station or a physio who sees students.

Before

"Comfortable rooms in Townsville. Book today."

  • No suburb, so it competes with every motel in the city
  • Nothing about the hospital or the campus nearby
  • Check-in times hidden on a separate page
  • Reviews that only say "great stay"
After

"Rooms in Douglas QLD 4814, near the hospital and JCU"

  • Late check-in for guests on the evening flight or driving in after work
  • Weekly rates for families staying through a hospital stay
  • Parking that fits a ute and a trailer
  • A review request that asks where guests travelled from
For the motel, and any business a booking site sells

The booking site gets the first stay. Your own site should get the second.

A family booking a week near the hospital will often find the motel through a big booking site first, and the commission comes out of that stay. The listing still works as a billboard. What you can do is make the second visit, and the next family's, come direct: a booking page on your own site that shows the total price with nothing added at the end, the cancellation terms in plain words, real photos of the rooms and the car park, and what booking direct gets them (a late check-in arranged by phone, a weekly rate). Link that page from your Business Profile, and the guests who search your name find the direct option first.

When a visitor leaves one star

A bad review about something you don't control

Visitors under strain write hard reviews: the flight was late, the hospital car park was full, the room wasn't ready at 6am. Google only removes reviews that break its policies, such as spam, off-topic posts or abuse, and its help page says not to report a review just because you disagree with it. If one does break the rules, report it from your profile and track it in the Reviews Management Tool; evaluation usually takes several days. Otherwise, reply once, calmly, with the fact the next traveller needs ("check-in starts at 2pm; call us and we'll hold your bags"), and keep asking every guest for a review so one bad night is not the newest thing on the page.

What we do in the first month

  1. Check from out of townHow you show up for searches made from Ayr, Ingham and Charters Towers, not only from your own shop.
  2. Fix the profileCategories, hours, photos and a service area inside the two-hour limit.
  3. Write the trip pagesOne page per service, with the distances, parking and booking detail a traveller checks.
  4. Start the reviewsA simple review link and a reply to every review, so visitors can see you answer.

From month two you get a one-page report each month: calls, direction requests and where you sit in the map results in town and from Ayr. Our process sets out each stage, and SEO consulting suits owners who would rather do the work themselves with advice.

The locals

The 179,011 people who live here still decide most searches

Most searches still come from residents: 179,011 in the urban area at the 2021 Census, with a median age of 35 and 38.3% of homes rented. Hospitals employed 6.8% of working residents and defence 5.9%.

A young, renting city moves house often, and people who move search again for a dentist, a mechanic or a gym. The council area is bigger again, with 206,260 people at June 2025.

Which plan

Where each plan fits, from one shop to several sites

The right plan depends on how many addresses you have and whether you drive out to Ayr, Ingham or Charters Towers. All three are monthly, with no setup fee and no lock-in. The pricing page lists what's inside each.

  • One shop, clinic or cafe at one address

Profile, a page per service and reviews, kept up every month.

    Starter$500a month
  • A trade or mobile service covering the drive-in towns

You travel to Ayr, Ingham or Charters Towers, inside the two-hour limit.
