Job description

SEO for plumbers: book the 2am job yourself

When a pipe bursts in the middle of the night, the job goes to the plumber Google shows first and who picks up. Plumber SEO is the work of making that you: a Business Profile that ranks in the map results for the suburbs your van covers, reviews real customers wrote, and a page for each job you want. The call then comes straight to your phone, with no platform taking a fee for passing it on.

  • The van parked down the street

One trade, two kinds of search

Plumbing customers search at two very different speeds, and a site built for only one of them hands the other to somebody else. The first search happens with water on the floor. The second happens over a cup of tea, days before anyone picks up the phone.

Emergency laneDecided in minutes
  1. 2:14 amSearches "burst pipe plumber" on a phone, torch in the other hand.
  2. 2:15 amLooks at the three map results and the star ratings beside them.
  3. 2:16 amTaps call on the first one that says open now.
  4. 2:17 amJob booked. Nobody else gets asked.
Planned laneDecided over days
  1. MondaySearches "hot water system replacement" after a cold shower.
  2. TuesdayReads reviews, opens four plumbers' websites, checks the brands they fit.
  3. ThursdayAsks two of them for a quote through their own sites.
  4. SaturdayBooks the one whose page answered the most questions.

The emergency lane rewards being visible and reachable right now: an accurate profile, real after-hours times and a number that rings. The planned lane rewards trust: reviews, photos of finished work and a page that explains what a hot water swap or bathroom rough-in involves. Those planned jobs are usually worth far more than a call-out. We plan for both lanes.

A platform lead is a lead you rent

Lead platforms have their place when the diary has gaps. As the main source of work they leave a plumbing business exposed, because the contact, the fee and the history all sit with someone else.

Don't cancel a platform tomorrow. Just don't let the whole pipeline depend on one, because the same monthly spend put into ranking builds something the business keeps. Our local SEO work and our wider page on SEO for tradies follow the same thinking.

Lead platform terms vary by provider and plan; read your own agreement for how jobs are shared and charged.

The price book

A tap washer and a bathroom reno both start as a search

The invoices are worlds apart, though. Chasing every call-out equally is how plumbers stay flat out and still don't get ahead, so we map your services by value before deciding which searches to chase first.

Lower value

Quick call-outs

Dripping taps, a running toilet, a minor leak. Plenty of searches, small tickets. Worth ranking for in your home suburbs, rarely worth chasing city-wide.

Middle

Emergency and repair work

Burst pipes, blocked drains, hot water that's gone cold overnight. Urgent calls that fill the week and often lead to the next job.

Higher value

Planned and install work

Hot water system replacements, bathroom rough-ins, gas fitting, repipes. Fewer searches, bigger invoices, decided on trust.

We rank you across the whole ladder, then weight the effort toward the top rungs you want more of. A sole trader who loves drainage work gets a different plan from a crew that wants hot water installs.

No shopfront needed

The van's run is your ranking area

You don't need premises to rank in the Map Pack, the three local results shown with the map, where many urgent plumbing calls start. A plumber working from a van can sit in those spots for the suburbs it covers.

Google's Business Profile help says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and popularity, and that more reviews and positive ratings can help. For a plumber that means a complete profile with a set service area, the jobs you do listed as services, steady genuine reviews, and the same name, number and details everywhere they appear. That's why local SEO for plumbers starts with the profile and reviews, then moves to the website.

A service-area business can hide its address and list the suburbs it travels to instead. Google's guidelines ask that the area stays within about two hours of driving time from where you're based. Our Google Business Profile service covers the set-up line by line.

Cold snaps and downpours

Rank before the busy season, not during it

Plumbing demand comes in surges: hot water systems give out when the weather turns cold, and drains back up after heavy rain. The plumbers already ranking when a surge hits catch the work.

Plumbers SEO can't be switched on the week the cold snap arrives; Google's SEO starter guide says some changes take several months to show. The cycles repeat, though, so we schedule your hot water pages ahead of the cold months and your drain pages ahead of the wet season.

Google's guide to its generative AI features says they draw on its core ranking systems and need no special markup or file, so the profile, reviews and pages above also cover AI search. Our AI SEO page explains what that does and doesn't mean.

Work order

How a plumbing campaign runs, start to sign-off

You see the plan and the price before any work starts, and nothing begins until you approve it.

  1. Check the area

We search your suburbs the way a customer would at 2am and on a Sunday afternoon, and record where you show.

  2. Fix the profile

Business Profile fields, services, hours and photos, plus the review ask. Usually the first thing to move.

  3. Build the pages

Service pages for the jobs that pay, then suburb pages where demand and travel time make sense.

  4. Earn local mentions

Citations cleaned up, plus links from suppliers, local groups and associations you already deal with.

  5. Report the calls

Map positions and calls from search each month, then the next suburb or service.

The full order of work for every client is on our process page.

Plumbers ask

Questions from the plumbing trade

What is SEO for plumbers?

SEO for plumbers is getting your plumbing business found on Google when someone in your area searches for the work you do, from a burst pipe at 2am to a planned bathroom renovation. Most of it is local: your Business Profile showing in the map results for the suburbs you cover, genuine reviews, and a page for each type of job.

Is SEO better than hipages or other lead platforms?

They solve different problems. Lead platforms such as hipages can put enquiries in front of you quickly, but you pay for that access, the same job can be offered to more than one business, and the first contact happens on their site rather than yours. SEO is slower to build, and a call from your own ranking comes to you alone with no fee per enquiry. Our view: use platforms to fill quiet patches if they pay for you, and build a ranking you own so the business doesn't depend on them.

How long does plumber SEO take to work?

There is no fixed date. Google's SEO starter guide notes that a change may show up within a few hours or only after several months. A plumber competes inside a service area rather than the whole country, which helps, and profile fixes are usually first to show. Pages for planned work take longer to settle. Our article on how long SEO takes explains the range.

Do I need a website, or is a Google Business Profile enough?

You need both. The profile gets you into the Map Pack, but your website is where planned, higher-value jobs like renovations and hot water installs are won, and it backs up the profile's claims about what you do and where. A profile with no website behind it is easier to out-rank.

The map for "emergency plumber" in our suburbs is full of listings that aren't real plumbers. What can we do?

Report them, keep records, and win on what they can't fake. For a listing with a made-up name, a phone line that forwards to a call centre or a website that belongs to someone else, Google has a Business Redressal Complaint Form for fraud involving a business's name, phone number or URL. Google says it won't update you on the outcome and can't promise action, so screenshot each listing with the date and report again if it reappears. For a listing at an address nobody works from, use "Suggest an edit" on Maps. Meanwhile, never copy the tactic with a keyword-stuffed name or a second listing; that gets genuine plumbers suspended. Your licence number, real job photos and a steady run of reviews are the things a call-centre listing can't match.

Should we put after-hours prices on the website?

Yes, at least the after-hours call-out fee and how the first half hour or hour is charged. The person with water through the ceiling at 2am is frightened of two things: the damage and the bill. A caller who has already seen your after-hours rate rings knowing what they've agreed to, and the argument at the front door never happens. Add what they can do while they wait, such as where the main stopcock usually is.

How do customers tell a licensed plumber from a handyman on the same app?

Mostly they can't, unless you show them. Put your plumbing licence number on the website footer, on each service page and on the Business Profile, and link to your state regulator's licence search so they can check it in a minute. Then say plainly which of your jobs, such as gas fitting, must be done by a licensed plumber or gasfitter under your state's rules, because a customer comparing prices may not know.

How much does SEO for plumbers cost?

Starter is $500 a month, Growth $900 and Performance $1,500, with no setup fee and no lock-in contract. A sole trader covering a few suburbs is a different job from a crew with gas and hot water pages across half a city, so we recommend a plan after the audit. The pricing page sets out what each includes.

How do we get started?

Tell us the suburbs your van covers and the jobs you want more of. We search them the way a customer would, check your profile and site, and write up the gaps with a plan and a monthly price for you to approve. The audit is free; ask for it through the contact page.
