SEO for Newcastle businesses that changed with the city

BHP made steel in Newcastle for 84 years, until the works closed on 30 September 1999. The city rebuilt itself around health, education and services. Plenty of its businesses changed too, but their Google listings and websites still describe the older version. This certificate is the check we run first.

Section one · the rebuild

What replaced steel, and why your listing may not know yet

For 84 years Newcastle was known as a steel city, as ABC News put it when it marked ten years since the closure. The 2021 Census shows the City of Newcastle that replaced it: health, social assistance, food and higher education at the top of the jobs list, and nearly three in ten workers in professional roles.

A business that moved with that change often still carries its old self online. The primary category was picked a decade ago. The service pages describe work it stopped doing. The photos show a fit-out that's gone, and the address in one directory still has the old unit number. Google can only rank what your profile and pages actually say, so bringing them up to date is often the quickest win in this city. It's usually the first month's work.

A Hunter resident looking for a physio, an accountant or an electrician wants to see what the business does now, where, and when it's open.

Section two · change of details

Bringing an old listing up to date without losing it

Update the profile you already have, one sensitive edit at a time, because this is where owners trip up: edit too much at once and Google may ask you to verify again, start a fresh profile and you compete with yourself. These are the three situations we check for before touching anything.

Moved or renamed

Two listings for one business

Google's help says each business gets one profile, and a profile treated as a duplicate won't show on Search or Maps. If you moved, change the address on the profile you already have. A small name change can be made on the same profile, but a new name that changes the proper nouns or the services in it counts as a new business: the old profile is marked closed and a new one is made. Where two profiles already exist, request a merge through a suggestion on Google Maps. Reviews are combined, though Google warns that replies can be lost.

Bought the business

The profile sits in someone else's account

Buy a business, or part ways with an agency, and the profile often stays in another person's Google account. Google's guidelines say the previous owner should add you and transfer ownership. If they won't or can't, request ownership through business.google.com/add: the current owner is emailed and has three days to reply, and if they don't, you may be offered the option to claim it. A service-area business with no shopfront asks Google support for the transfer instead.

Ten things to fix

One sensitive edit at a time

Name, address, phone and category changed in one sitting is the kind of edit that can send a profile back to verification, and Google says a verification video can take up to five working days to review. Change those details one at a time, starting with whatever customers feel first, usually hours or phone. Keep the name exactly as it reads on your sign, with no suburb or service added, and pick the fewest categories that describe the core business, as the guidelines ask.

Google Business Profile

Section three · the region

Five Hunter council areas, five different top employers

Drive forty minutes from the harbour in any direction and the local economy changes. Google builds map results around where each searcher stands, so a business that serves "Newcastle" is really choosing between five markets with different people, hours and competitors.

Section four · addresses

Shared postcodes, and the other Newcastle on the far side of the world

Hunter postcodes cross suburb lines. Australia Post lists ten localities under Charlestown's 2290, from Redhead to Whitebridge, so the suburb name does the real work in a listing. Each tag shows a postcode, the places that share it, and what that changes.

2300

Newcastle, Newcastle East, Cooks Hill, The Hill, Bar Beach

The light rail runs six stops from Newcastle Interchange in Wickham to Newcastle Beach, 5am to 1am. The nearest stop belongs in your directions.

2303

Hamilton, Hamilton East, Hamilton South

Beaumont Street is searched by name. Say it on the profile and contact page, not just "Hamilton". More on Hamilton

2291

Merewether, Merewether Heights, The Junction

If you trade at The Junction, write The Junction. The shared postcode won't tell Google which one you mean.

2290

Charlestown and nine more, Redhead to Mount Hutton

A shop should name Charlestown everywhere; a mobile business should list the 2290 suburbs it really visits.

2289

Kotara, Adamstown, Adamstown Heights, Garden Suburb, Highfields

Australia Post also lists Kotara Fair and Kotara South. Entrances and parking matter more than the number.

2287

Wallsend, Elermore Vale, Maryland, Fletcher, Minmi, Rankin Park

For a western-side trade, these are the suburb names customers will actually type.

2304

Mayfield, Warabrook, Sandgate, Kooragang

Industrial suppliers here often sell interstate, so capability pages count for more than the map.

Checking your ranking from your own office tells you about one spot, so we track a grid of points across the areas you serve. For a Hunter business the grid usually shows a strong patch around the premises and gaps further out, often where one council area meets the next. Those gaps are where a page, more reviews from that area or a better service-area setting helps, and our local SEO Newcastle service is built around closing them.

Section five · by trade

Work orders for what the Hunter actually does

The same four kinds of work apply to every business: profile, pages, technical health and links. The ratio changes. A Charlestown dentist lives almost entirely in the map; an engineering supplier near Kooragang may sell to buyers in Perth and barely use it.

Health and dental

Map first, inside the AHPRA rules

Hospitals lead employment in both Newcastle and Lake Macquarie. Right category, current hours, a page per treatment, reviews that name the suburb, and no testimonials about clinical aspects, per section 133 of the National Law.

Trades and construction

Three councils, one honest service area

Covering Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and Maitland means dozens of postcodes. Match the service area to where the vans go and write pages only where you have real jobs to show.

Industry, energy and supply

Capability pages for buyers who never visit

Coal mining leads in Maitland and Cessnock, and many Hunter firms supply mining, energy and defence clients anywhere in Australia. Those buyers search for a capability or a standard, not a suburb.

Section seven · AI answers

AI Overviews in the Hunter, checked against Google's own guide

Google says its AI features, AI Overviews among them, draw on the same core ranking systems as ordinary search, and that a site needs no special optimisation to be eligible. There is no separate AI project to buy.

Pages Google can crawl and index are the entry ticket, and Google's guide says content written for people needs no rewriting into "chunks" for AI. A complete Business Profile helps local businesses, and so does writing "Newcastle NSW" in full. Nobody can promise you a mention inside an AI answer. More detail sits on our AI search page.

Claim received

"Add an llms.txt file and special schema to get into AI answers."

RejectedGoogle ignores llms.txt, and structured data isn't required for its AI features. Structured data can still make pages eligible for rich results in ordinary search, which is reason enough to add it.

Section eight · schedule of rates

How much of the Hunter you cover sets the rate

Three published plans, nothing to pay upfront and no contract, so you can stop at the end of any month. How much of the region you want and how crowded your category is decide which plan the audit recommends. Full detail is on the pricing page.

Questions on file

Hunter coverage, costs and the other Newcastle, answered

How do I choose an SEO agency in Newcastle?

Test any Newcastle SEO agency on whether it treats the Hunter as several markets. Ask which areas it would target for your business and why, what changes in month one, and whether you can see a sample report before you sign. Ask a single consultant the same questions. Our prices are on this page, we record your starting position before any work, and there is no lock-in.

How much do Newcastle SEO services cost?

With us it is $500 a month for Starter (one location), $900 for Growth (several suburbs or council areas) and $1,500 for Performance (crowded categories, or selling beyond the Hunter). No setup fee and no contract.

Do you mean Newcastle NSW or Newcastle in England?

Newcastle NSW. Newcastle upon Tyne shares the name, so tools, directories and reviews can mix the two up. Put the suburb, NSW and the postcode in your profile address, website footer and directory listings, written the same way each time, and Google has no reason to doubt which city you mean.

Is Newcastle easier to rank in than Sydney?

Sometimes, but it depends on the category, not the city. A plumber in Charlestown competes with other plumbers near Charlestown, while an online store based here competes nationally. We'd rather check your actual competitors in the audit than promise the Hunter is easy.

How long does SEO take in Newcastle?

Google's starter guide says changes can register within hours or take several months, so there's no fixed date. Correcting a category or missing hours tends to show quickly; new area pages and earned links take longer, and the wider the area, the longer it runs.

What is the difference between local SEO and SEO in Newcastle?

Local SEO covers the map listings and searches that name a place, built on your Business Profile, reviews and listings. Broader SEO is about the ordinary results across the Hunter, NSW or the country. Most of the local SEO Newcastle shopfronts need comes down to that profile plus reviews that name the suburb.

Which Newcastle and Hunter areas do you cover?

All five council areas, planned one by one: the City of Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Maitland, Port Stephens and Cessnock. Each has its own economy and its own competing businesses, so we pick the areas you actually serve rather than chasing one regional ranking.

Can you help an online store based in Newcastle?

Yes. A Hunter store usually sells nationally, so category and product pages, structure and speed matter far more than the map. Our eCommerce SEO in Newcastle page explains the approach.

Our old agency put a tracking number on our profile. Is that a problem?

It can be when you part ways. Google's guidelines say the phone number on a profile must be under the direct control of the business, and they allow additional numbers. So make the primary number a line you own and will keep, and if you use call tracking, check whose name the tracking number is in before you sign anything. Then put your real number on your website footer and every directory listing.

Do you have an office in Newcastle?

No. Boltly is based in Melbourne and works with Newcastle businesses remotely, by phone, email and video call. You can reach us on 0468 147 271, Monday to Friday, 9 to 5 Melbourne time.

Can you guarantee Newcastle rankings?

No. Google decides the results, and a promised position usually means a search nobody makes or tactics that put the site at risk. We commit to the written plan, a recorded starting position and a monthly report on which areas moved and which didn't.

How do I get started with SEO in Newcastle?

Ask for a free audit: tell us what you sell and which parts of the Hunter you serve, and we'll reply in writing. There's no obligation.
