WordPress SEO for Brisbane businesses

WordPress runs 40.2% of all websites, according to W3Techs, and Brisbane owners ask Google about it by name: hosting, web design and which SEO plugin to use. Whether WordPress is good for SEO comes down to its setup, and a green light in a plugin doesn't prove the setup is right. Boltly sorts out the settings, plugins, pages and speed that decide how a WordPress site appears in Google on a plan you can stop in any month.

What WordPress SEO covers

WordPress gives you a sound base: clean page structure, editable titles and a huge plugin library. SEO is the work of setting it up so Google can find, read and trust every page, and keeping it that way.

WordPress SEO for a Brisbane business means the right settings for search visibility and permalinks, one well-configured SEO plugin, fast hosting, a clear page for every service and suburb you serve, and checks after each update. A plugin can show you what's missing, but it can't write the pages or earn the links that move rankings. Google's own SEO Starter Guide admits there's no secret that automatically puts a site first.

Who runs what

Four in ten websites run on WordPress

W3Techs, which surveys the web daily, puts WordPress on 58.6% of the websites whose content management system it can identify, and on 40.2% of all websites. Shopify sits at 5.4% of all sites and Wix at 4.2%.

Google and developers know WordPress inside out, and there's a plugin for almost everything. But every theme, builder and plugin you add is more code to load and another setting that can quietly block a page. Shops are common too: WooCommerce alone has more than 7 million active installations on WordPress.org, and our WooCommerce SEO service covers product and category pages.

Settings › Permalinks

Addresses that people and Google can read

Google's SEO Starter Guide says it plainly: "Use descriptive URLs". In WordPress that starts in Settings, under Permalinks, where Post name gives you addresses like /roof-restoration/ instead of /?p=482.

Set it before a site launches if you can. Changing permalinks on an established site changes every address, so each old URL needs a redirect or you lose the visits it earned. Keep slugs short, use the words customers use, and leave dates out unless your content is news. If you're rebuilding or changing themes, our SEO migration service handles the redirects.

Pre-launch inspection

A building inspection for your indexing

The most common reason a WordPress site is missing from Google is one tick box. Under Settings, Reading, "Discourage search engines from indexing this site" is meant for sites under construction, and it's easy to leave switched on after launch.

Google suggests the site: operator as a quick check: search site: followed by your domain to see which pages it holds. WordPress also makes copies of content through tag, category and date archives. Google says duplicate content "is not a violation of our spam policies", but it still wants one version of each page marked with rel="canonical", which most SEO plugins handle for you. Our technical SEO guide goes deeper.

Updates, privacy and page builders

Yoast SEO 28.6, the current release, needs WordPress 6.9 or later, so an old install can't simply update to it. Rank Math's listing notes a daily "Default prompts sync" that sends your site URL, username, API key and plugin version, which is worth reading about if privacy matters to your business.

Neither is a reason to avoid them, but someone needs to watch updates, compatibility and data settings. Most sites are keeping up: 64.1% of WordPress sites already run version 7. We keep one SEO plugin rather than two fighting over the same tags, and check speed after big layout changes. For deeper performance work, see our technical SEO service.

Green lights, no rankings

Yoast says green. So why isn't the page ranking?

Because the lights only check your draft against a writing checklist, and ranking depends on things the plugin can't see. It's one of the most asked questions on the WordPress support forums: months of green lights, and Google still sends nobody.

What the green light checks

  • Your chosen phrase appears in the title, slug and first paragraph
  • The meta description isn't too long or too short
  • Sentences and paragraphs pass a readability formula
  • There are some links and an image with alt text

What it can't see

  • Whether your page answers the search better than the ten already ranking
  • Whether anyone outside your site links to it or mentions you
  • Whether Google indexed it, or chose another page of yours instead
  • Content your page builder adds that the plugin didn't read

Google never sees the lights, which are good for catching a missing title and little else. When a green page doesn't rank, we look at the pages already on page one for that search, what yours offers that they don't, and whether Google has the page at all.

Page builders add one more trap. Owners on the WordPress support forums report SEO plugins that stop reading content in Elementor widgets after an update, so the score can be wrong either way. Check the page as Google got it instead: in Search Console, the URL Inspection tool's View crawled page shows the code Google fetched and a screenshot of how it rendered.

Who's on the street

A city of builders, consultants and landlords

Greater Brisbane had 242,271 businesses at 30 June 2025, 6,848 more than a year earlier. Construction leads with 39,935, with professional, scientific and technical services close behind at 36,473.

Most are small: 61.9% have no employees and 97.1% have fewer than 20, so the website usually works without a marketing team behind it. Brisbane City Council runs business hubs in Nundah and the city, with "free co-working available at the Suburban Business Hub in Nundah", plus a 24-hour Business Hotline on 133 BNE (133 263). To win the map as well as the website, pair this work with local SEO in Brisbane.

WordPress questions

Meta descriptions, tags and Wix, for Brisbane sites

How much does WordPress SEO cost in Brisbane?

WordPress SEO with Boltly starts at $500 a month for one site, $900 for more pages and suburbs, and $1,500 for competitive categories or stores, all billed monthly with no lock-in. The main SEO plugins have free versions, so most of the cost is the setup, the pages and the monthly checks rather than software.

Does WordPress have built-in SEO?

Some. WordPress lets you edit page titles, set readable permalinks, add image alt text and choose whether search engines can index the site. It has no meta description field or detailed indexing controls out of the box, which is why most sites add a single SEO plugin such as Yoast SEO or Rank Math.

Why is my WordPress website not showing on Google?

Check Settings, Reading first: if "Discourage search engines from indexing this site" is ticked, untick it. Then search site: followed by your domain to see what Google holds. Google's own guide says changes can show within hours or take months, so a brand-new site may not appear straight away, and pages can be left out if they're duplicates, blocked by a plugin setting or have very little on them.

How do I add a meta description in WordPress?

Install an SEO plugin, open the page or post, and find the plugin's panel, which has a field for the meta description; Yoast SEO and Rank Math both work this way. Without a plugin you'd need a developer to add it to your theme. Keep it to a sentence or two that sums up the page for a searcher.

Is WordPress better for SEO than Wix?

Not automatically. Both can rank when they're set up properly. WordPress gives you more control over code, plugins and hosting, which helps bigger or more complex sites, while Wix is simpler to run. W3Techs puts WordPress on 40.2% of all websites and Wix on 4.2%, so WordPress also has far more developers and tools to call on.

What is an SEO-friendly URL?

A short, readable address that describes the page, like /roof-restoration/ rather than /?p=482. Google's SEO Starter Guide says "Use descriptive URLs". In WordPress, choose Post name under Settings, Permalinks, then edit each page's slug so it uses the words your customers search for.

Are WordPress tags good for SEO?

Only in moderation. Each tag creates its own archive page, and lots of tags with one or two posts each make thin, near-identical pages. Use a few tags you'll reuse, or none at all, and consider keeping tag archives out of search through your SEO plugin. Categories usually do the grouping job better.

Why are my WordPress changes not showing?

Usually caching. A caching plugin, your host or your browser may be serving a saved copy of the page, so clear the plugin and host caches, then refresh. Google also has to recrawl a page before search results change; the URL Inspection tool in Search Console lets you request it.

The first eight questions came from Google's suggestions for WordPress searches, rechecked 4 October 2026.
