Job description

Coburg sits about 8 kilometres north of the city centre in the City of Merri-bek, with Sydney Road's shops, the Coburg market, three tram routes and a raised station on the Upfield line. Google still mixes the name with Coburg in Oregon and Germany, so the searches that bring local customers are the specific ones: restaurants open now, shops on Sydney Road, the market's hours. Boltly helps Coburg businesses light up in those searches with a complete Google profile, a page for each service and steady reviews, on a plan with no lock-in.

Behind the front doors

Behind Coburg's front doors

Coburg is a suburb of houses, where 65.1% of homes are separate houses and the median age is 37. A third of residents speak a language other than English at home, most often Italian, Greek or Arabic.

SEO for a Coburg business starts with a Google profile that says Coburg VIC 3058, not just Melbourne, then a page for each service, directions from Sydney Road, the station or your tram stop, and a regular stream of reviews.

Sydney Road

Sydney Road, the market and the station in between

Sydney Road runs through Coburg as one continuous strip from Brunswick, and Yarra Trams lists eight route 19 stops along it inside the suburb, from Moore Street (29) to Rogers Street (36). Coburg station sits a short block west at Bell and Hudson Streets, so the shopping area is the band between the rails and the road.

Google's suggestions show what people want: restaurants, food, jewellery, dress shops and directions on Sydney Road, and hours, fish, flowers, a butcher and halal meat at the market. If you trade in that band, say which arcade, mall, market entrance or tram stop you're nearest, keep your hours exact, especially on Sundays, and name the products people ask for in your profile and on your website.

Getting here

A station in the air and three tram routes

Coburg is on the Upfield line. In 2020 the Level Crossing Removal Project replaced the crossings at Bell, Munro and Reynard Streets in Coburg and Moreland Road with 2.5 kilometres of raised rail, and opened new Coburg and Moreland stations. Metro Trains lists both at Coburg 3058 addresses; Merlynston and Batman, further up the line, are in Coburg North.

Tram route 19 runs along Sydney Road from North Coburg to Flinders Street Station, route 1 runs along Nicholson Street, with Coburg stops from 135 Bell St down to 130 The Avenue, and route 6 starts at Moreland Station. People search for the station's parking, its timetable and the trip to the city, so give directions from the station and the nearest tram stop by name and number.

Which Coburg?

Coburg, Victoria, not Coburg, Germany

Google's suggestions for plain "coburg" are local now, from the drive-in to the leisure centre, but the name still leaks overseas as soon as people get specific. "coburg restaurants" offers "oregon", "coburg restaurants open" offers Cobourg in Ontario, and "seo coburg" offers the German "seo agentur coburg".

Coburg North is a separate suburb that shares the 3058 postcode, so the postcode alone does not tell Google which one you are. The council was formed in 1994 from the old Brunswick and Coburg cities and was called Moreland before it became Merri-bek, and Moreland is still a station and road name. Say Coburg VIC 3058 or "Coburg, Melbourne" in your titles and profile so Google and customers know which one you mean. For a nearby example, see SEO in Essendon.

Landmarks

A lake, a council hub and a railway in the air

Coburg Lake Reserve is where Merri-bek holds Carols by the Lake, this year on Saturday 5 December. Bell Street is the civic spine: the council's office is at 90 Bell Street, the Night Market fills Bridges Reserve on Bell Street, and the raised Coburg station now carries trains over it.

The Level Crossing Removal Project also left new open space under and beside the rail line, with playgrounds, a skate and parkour area and a dog park, according to Victoria's Big Build. People search the lake for its playground, parking, fishing and parkrun, so nearby cafes and shops can use the lake, the station or Bell Street as landmarks in their directions.

Who your customers are

A three-way split between renters, owners and mortgages

Separate houses make up 65.1% of homes, semi-detached and terraces 24.3% and flats 10.4%. Renters hold 33.2% of homes, outright owners 32.2% and mortgage holders 32.1%, an almost even split, and the median weekly household income is $2,065.

Two thirds of residents (67.1%) were born in Australia, followed by Italy, Greece, England, Lebanon and New Zealand, and 65.3% speak only English at home. Professionals make up 36.1% of workers, and hospitals and higher education employ the most residents. If your team speaks Italian, Greek, Arabic or Turkish, say so on your profile and website.

When the listing vanishes

Your Google listing was suspended overnight. Do this before you appeal

A suspended profile drops out of Maps, often with a short policy email and nothing else. Don't start a new listing: Google's help page says not to create a second profile for the same business while an appeal is under review. Work through it in this order.

  1. Find the likely causeThe appeal tool shows the restricted profile, the reason and a link to the policy. Common triggers are extra words in the business name, a PO box or rented virtual office as the address, and several big edits to name, address and category at once.
  2. Fix it before appealingPut the name back to what is on your Sydney Road sign, correct the address, undo the category changes. An appeal against a profile that still breaks the guidelines is likely to fail.
  3. Gather proof with matching detailsGoogle lists business registration, a business licence, tax certificates and utility bills (electricity, phone, water, internet). The name and address on each must match the profile. Once you open the evidence form you have 60 minutes to submit it.
  4. Appeal once, then wait for the emailGoogle reviews the appeal and emails a decision. Keep the case details; if it is rejected, the Business Profile Help Community is the next place to ask, with your case ID.

Coburg questions

What Coburg traders want to know

How much does SEO cost for a Coburg business?

Coburg businesses can start on Boltly's Starter plan from $500 a month for one location, move to Growth from $900 to reach Brunswick, Pascoe Vale or Preston, or choose Performance from $1,500 for crowded categories, all month to month with no setup fee. Sydney Road food businesses and health services need the most work.

Why does Google show Coburg in Germany instead of my business?

The name is shared, and Google's suggestions point an SEO search towards German agencies and a restaurant search towards Oregon. Local customers usually add what they want, such as halal restaurants or jewellery on Sydney Road. Use Coburg VIC 3058 in your profile, page titles and contact page so Google can match you to those local searches.

Should my listing say Coburg, Coburg North or Brunswick?

Choose the suburb on your street address, because Google checks it when it verifies you. Coburg North shares the 3058 postcode but is a separate suburb, and Brunswick is a neighbour, so if you also serve them, give each one a page on your website rather than changing your listing.

How do I get my Sydney Road shop found on Google Maps?

Pick the most specific category, add your products or services, and use photos of your shopfront and signage so people can spot you from the tram. If you're inside an arcade or the market, say so in your description and directions.

How can a halal butcher or grocer get found in Coburg?

People search "coburg market halal meat" and halal restaurants by suburb, so say halal clearly in your description, your products and your website, and add photos of your counter. Keep your hours current, because shoppers also check whether you open on Sunday.

What should I do when Sydney Road has works or a closure?

People do search for Sydney Road closures. When access changes near you, post an update on your Google profile, set special hours if they change, and explain the best way in, whether that's a side street, the station or a tram stop.

Is it worth adding Italian, Greek or Arabic to my website?

It can be. About one in six Coburg residents speaks Italian, Greek or Arabic at home. If your regulars are among them, a professionally translated page or two can help, but a half-finished translation looks worse than none. The simplest first step is listing the languages your team speaks on your Google profile.

An agency set up a tracking phone number on our Google listing. Is that a problem?

It can be, mostly when the agency relationship ends. Google's guidelines say the phone number must be under the direct control of the business, and they allow additional numbers alongside the main one. If you use call tracking, have the number held in your name or made transferable, and keep your own number as an additional phone on the profile, in your website footer and in directories. Then a change of agency doesn't cut off your calls.

Who should own my website's domain name?

Your business. A designer or agency that registered it for you may have put it in their own name, and you usually only find out when you try to leave. Look up your domain in the .au WHOIS tool on auDA's website and check the registrant name. If it isn't your business, ask for the registrant to be changed now, while things are friendly, and keep the login details for the registrar yourself.
