SEO for Footscray businesses in Melbourne's west

Footscray, about 6 kilometres west of the city centre, is home to the City of Maribyrnong's Civic Precinct on Napier Street, the Footscray Market, a station on three Metro lines and a new hospital that opened in February 2026. Its searches are as varied as its food: late-night restaurants, Ethiopian dining, the market's opening hours. Boltly helps Footscray businesses win them, on a plan you can leave any month.

Weighed up

Weighing up the 3011 customer

Footscray is young, diverse and mostly renting: the median age is 34, more than half of homes are rented and only 53.3% of residents speak just English at home.

For a Footscray business, SEO means a Google Business Profile that names Footscray VIC 3011, a page for each service, directions from the market, the station or Barkly Street, and new reviews every month.

Food and the market

A market, a food scene and the streets around them

Footscray Market and the station sit side by side on tram route 82, at stops 63 and 64. The Census shows the food scene in the workforce: 4.5% of working residents were in cafes and restaurants in 2021, almost double the Victorian share, and one in ten residents spoke Vietnamese at home.

Diners search by cuisine ("vietnamese", "ethiopian") and by time ("open late"). Name your cuisine in your category and description, keep late hours exact, and add photos of the dishes people ask for.

A stall inside Footscray Market: what goes in the address?

The market's street address, with your stall or shop number in the second address line. Google's guidelines allow suite and unit details there, and its address help says a business inside another one can ask for that to show. To show an address at all, Google expects permanent signage with your name at the spot, so your stall needs a fixed sign. Then drag the pin to your stall's entrance and put the market's opening days in your hours so you don't look closed when the doors are open.

Getting here

A rail hub in the middle of the west

Footscray station, at Hopkins and Irving Streets, is on Metro's Sunbury, Werribee and Williamstown lines, and the Sunbury line now runs on through the Metro Tunnel to Parkville. Tram route 82 has eight Footscray stops, from Gordon Street (57) round to Footscray Station (64).

People search "footscray station parking" and trips to Southern Cross, Parkville and, new since February, the hospital. If you're a short walk from the station or tram stop, say so in your directions, and name the exit or street people should use.

A new hospital

The hospital moved, and so did the searches

The new Footscray Hospital opened on 18 February 2026 on the corner of Geelong Road and Ballarat Road, replacing the original hospital on Gordon Street. The Victorian Health Building Authority says that, once fully operational, it will provide more than 500 inpatient beds and capacity for about 15,000 more patients and 20,000 more emergency presentations a year. Western Health runs it.

"footscray hospital" is the third suggestion for plain "footscray", and Google now suggests the trip from the station to the hospital too. Nearby pharmacies, clinics and cafes should update any directions that still mention the old site.

Old hospital directions keep turning up in answers

Search results, AI answers and directory listings all draw on what has been published about you, so an old line like "opposite the hospital on Gordon Street" can linger long after you've changed your own site. There's no form to send a correction straight to an AI model; you fix the sources. Search your business name together with "Gordon Street", correct every page and directory listing you control, make your profile, website and social pages agree, and use the feedback link on any AI answer that still gets it wrong.

Council projects

Projects changing central Footscray

Maribyrnong City Council's Creative West project brings together a library, a performing arts venue and a town park in central Footscray, and its concept design is out for comment. The council itself now works from the Civic Precinct and Community Hub at 61 Napier Street.

Works like these change footpaths, parking and entrances for months. When they reach your street, update your directions and post about access. The council's Creative West page gives no completion date yet.

Which Footscray?

Nine suburbs touch Footscray, and one shares its name

On the ABS suburb map Footscray covers about 5 square kilometres and borders nine suburbs: Maribyrnong to the north, Maidstone to the north-west, Ascot Vale and Flemington to the north-east, Kensington to the east, West Melbourne to the south-east, Seddon and Yarraville to the south-west, and West Footscray to the west.

West Footscray, postcode 3012, and Seddon are separate suburbs, and "footscray vic uni" searches are about Victoria University's campuses. Use Footscray VIC 3011 in your listings if that's your address. For nearby examples, see SEO in Port Melbourne and SEO in South Melbourne.

Who your customers are

One in ten speaks Vietnamese at home

One in ten Footscray residents (10.5%) speaks Vietnamese at home, and 8.5% were born in Vietnam.

Just over half (50.9%) were born in Australia, followed by Vietnam, India, England, China and New Zealand. Cafes and restaurants employ more residents than any other industry, followed by hospitals and higher education. If you serve customers in Vietnamese or another language, saying so on your profile and website can decide who calls.

Footscray questions

What Footscray traders ask

How much does SEO cost for a Footscray business?

One Footscray shopfront sits on our Starter plan at $500 a month. Reaching Seddon, Yarraville or West Footscray as well is Growth at $900, and crowded fields go on Performance at $1,500. There's no 12-month contract and no setup fee. Restaurants and health services tend to need the most work here.

How long does SEO take for a restaurant in Footscray?

Google's SEO starter guide says a change can take effect in hours or take several months. With so many restaurants close together, a better profile, photos and reviews usually move you in the map first, while the top spots and website rankings take longer.

Someone rang saying they're from Google and can fix our listing. Is that real?

Be wary. Google's help says there's no way to request or pay for a better local ranking, and that no one can guarantee a first-place spot. Google does send automated calls or texts to a profile's verified number to confirm details, but they don't sell anything. Never give an unexpected caller access to your Business Profile or a verification code.

Should I list my business in Footscray, West Footscray or Seddon?

Use the suburb in your address. West Footscray and Seddon are separate suburbs, so claiming the wrong one confuses customers and can cause verification problems. Mention nearby suburbs you serve on your website instead.

How do I get my restaurant into "open late" searches?

Set accurate opening hours, including late nights, and add special hours for public holidays. Google uses your hours to show if you're open, so a wrong closing time can hide you just when people are searching.

Is it worth having a Vietnamese version of my website?

If many of your customers prefer Vietnamese, yes, as long as the translation is done properly and kept up to date. At the very least, say which languages your staff speak on your profile and contact page.

The hospital moved. What should nearby businesses change?

Update anything that mentions Gordon Street, describe where you are in relation to Geelong and Ballarat Roads, and check your hours suit staff and visitors. Google already suggests the trip from the station to the hospital, so write those directions out.

Should I mention bulk billing on my Google profile?

Yes, if you offer it. People search "footscray dentist bulk bill", so say it clearly in your description, your services list and your website, and keep it accurate if your billing changes.

How do I reach Victoria University students?

Mention how close you are to the campus, keep hours that suit students, and post about student offers at the start of each semester.
