SEO for Melbourne CBD businesses, from the laneways to the top floor

Melbourne's CBD puts offices, clinics and practices in its towers, cafes in its laneways, and residents who are young, renting and almost all living in apartments. Google's suggestions show how precise searches are here: lunch specials, a dentist who bulk bills, coffee on Degraves Street. Boltly helps CBD businesses win them, month to month with no lock-in.

The short answer

Fifty-five thousand residents, and everyone else on a phone

The CBD is young and renting: the median age is 29, 71.0% of homes are rented and 99.2% are flats or apartments. Workers, students and visitors arrive every day too.

For a CBD business, SEO means an address with the street, number, level and suite, a Google Business Profile with the right category and accurate hours, a page for each service, directions that name the nearest corner or laneway, and reviews that keep arriving.

The Hoddle Grid

Main streets, little streets and exact addresses

The City of Melbourne calls the central grid the Hoddle Grid: Flinders, Collins, Bourke, Lonsdale and La Trobe Streets run east to west between Spencer and Spring Streets, each with a narrower "Little" street or lane between them. For addresses, the suburb is simply Melbourne, and Australia Post gives it postcode 3000.

Collins Street and Little Collins Street are different addresses, and so are Flinders Street and Flinders Lane. Put the exact street, number, level and suite on your profile and website, then say which corner or entrance to look for.

Laneways and lunch

Lunch is searched by the lane

In the laneways, people search the lane itself. Google suggests "degraves street restaurants", "cafes" and "coffee", and even "degraves street & centre place", so the lane name does the work a suburb name does elsewhere.

Weekday searches are specific: lunch "specials", "deals" and "set menu", and restaurants "for large groups". Publish your lunch menu with prices, say how many you can seat, and put the laneway in your address, not only the nearest main street.

When the office crowd only comes in midweek

With many office workers splitting the week between home and the city, a lunch trade that once ran Monday to Friday can lean towards the middle days. Keep every day's hours exact, with special hours for public holidays, so an "open now" search never shows you closed. If you trade on weekends, give that its own page or menu, with directions from Flinders Street or the new Town Hall and State Library stations. If you close on a quiet day, show it, so nobody walks to a locked door and writes about it.

Underground

Two new stations under Swanston Street

The Metro Tunnel opened on 30 November 2025, and the Big Switch on 2 February 2026 turned on extra peak services for the Cranbourne, Pakenham and Sunbury lines. Its CBD stations are State Library and Town Hall, under Swanston Street, and Victoria's Big Build says trains reach each new station up to every 3 minutes in the peak.

If you're near State Library or Town Hall station, name it in your directions and check your pin sits on the right side of the block.

Towers and practices

Practices on level 20 still need to be found

Google suggests "melbourne cbd lawyers", dentists who are orthodontists or bulk bill, and for parking, "rates", "weekend", "early bird" and "public holiday".

For a practice upstairs, the building's street address, your suite number and the best entrance turn a search into an appointment. If you bulk bill, offer a first consultation or validate parking, say so on your profile and pages.

A Collins Street mailbox won't hold up as a Google address

Google's guidelines say a rented postal address you don't work from, often sold as a virtual office, isn't eligible for a Business Profile, and an office in a co-working space only qualifies if it has clear signage, receives customers during opening hours and is staffed by your own people in those hours. If you meet clients in a serviced office on those terms, list the level and suite in the second address line. If you work from home and visit clients, set the profile up as a service-area business with the home address hidden.

Who lives in the 3000

A young, global suburb, and neighbours that aren't the CBD

Just 26.6% of residents were born in Australia; China (15.1%), India (7.0%), Malaysia (6.2%), Indonesia (3.7%) and Thailand (2.6%) follow. Mandarin is spoken at home by 20.1%, and 35.9% speak only English.

Some businesses in these suburbs call themselves CBD businesses. Describe your location accurately and build pages only for areas you actually serve. See our pages on SEO in Southbank, SEO in Docklands and SEO in Carlton.

  3. Block 3

    Pages

CBD questions

What CBD owners ask before they book

How much does SEO cost for a Melbourne CBD business?

Boltly publishes three plans: Starter from $500 a month for one CBD location, Growth from $900 to add Southbank, Docklands or Carlton, and Performance from $1,500 for crowded categories such as legal and dental, with no lock-in and no setup fee.

How long does SEO take in the CBD?

Google's SEO starter guide puts it plainly: some changes show in hours, others take several months. Correcting your address, level, category and hours is usually the quickest gain. Organic rankings for legal and dental take longest.

Can a business in Southbank or Docklands rank for Melbourne CBD searches?

Sometimes, because they sit next to the CBD and Google weighs distance. Keep your true suburb in your address, then explain on your pages that you serve CBD clients and how close you are. A false address can get a profile suspended.

How do law firms get more clients from Google?

Build a page for each practice area, answer the questions clients actually ask, show who the lawyers are, and earn reviews from satisfied clients. Legal is crowded in the CBD, so steady, specific content beats a one-off push.

How do restaurants rank for "for large groups" searches?

Say how many you can seat and whether you have private or semi-private spaces, show group menus with prices, and add photos of the room set up for a group.

A rival's listing uses a fake CBD address. Can we report it?

Yes. Open the listing in Google Maps and suggest an edit, choosing the closest option, such as a wrong address or a place that doesn't exist, and keep dated screenshots in case you need to report it again. Results can be slow. Don't copy the tactic; a profile built on a virtual office is at risk.

Is SEO worth it with so much foot traffic outside?

Usually, because much of that foot traffic decides on a phone. The business that shows first with clear hours, prices and reviews gets the walk-in, and rankings keep working after hours. Our guide on whether SEO is worth it explains the maths.
