SEO for Southbank businesses

Southbank sits just across the Yarra from the CBD: apartment towers, riverside restaurants and Melbourne's Arts Precinct. People search it precisely, for a restaurant on the river, the Southgate food court or the Arts Centre car park. We set up your profile with your building, level and nearest bridge or tram stop, write a page per service and keep genuine reviews coming. You can cancel any month.

Buzz the lobby

Twenty-two thousand neighbours, stacked high

Southbank skews young and lives in towers. The median age is 31, 98.3% of homes are flats, two in three are rented, and only a third of residents were born in Australia. Renters move often, so plenty of locals are still picking a regular cafe, gym or GP.

SEO in Southbank means being found as Melbourne's Southbank, not Brisbane's or London's: a Google profile that names Southbank VIC 3006, a page per service, directions from the promenade, the Arts Precinct or your tram stop, and new reviews every month.

A vertical suburb

One of the densest places in Australia

The ABS lists Southbank - East as Australia's second most densely populated area at June 2025, with 24,300 people per square kilometre. It grew as the industrial edge of South Melbourne, all wharves and warehouses, until the Arts Centre was finished in the 1980s and Southgate opened in 1992.

Eureka Tower's Melbourne Skydeck sits 88 floors up and calls itself the highest observation deck in the southern hemisphere. With thousands living a short walk away, give your street address, building entrance and floor or suite, so nobody gets lost in a lobby.

The Arts Precinct

A gallery, theatres and a concert hall down the road

The Melbourne Arts Precinct runs along St Kilda Road and Sturt Street, with Arts Centre Melbourne, the National Gallery of Victoria, ACCA, Southbank Theatre, the Melbourne Recital Centre and the Malthouse Theatre. The NGV's St Kilda Road building opened in 1968, the Arts Centre complex was completed in the 1980s, and ACCA moved into its purpose-built Sturt Street building in 2002.

Route 1 trams stop at 14 Arts Precinct and 17 Arts Precinct Sturt Street, and route 109 at 125 Clarendon St Junction & Normanby Rd. People search "Arts Centre Melbourne car park", "tickets" and "events", so if you run a bar, restaurant or car park nearby, name the venues and the walk from them, keep show-night hours exact and mention any pre-show menu.

On the river

The promenade, Southgate and the Sunday market

Southgate opened in 1992 as an arts and leisure precinct of specialty shops, restaurants and offices, with a promenade along the Yarra Bank and a view across the river. Sandridge Bridge links the bank to Flinders Street station.

Google's suggestions after "Southgate Melbourne" are restaurants, food court, bars and parking. If you trade on the river, say which level and entrance you're on, and use Southgate or Sandridge Bridge as a landmark in your directions. For anyone arriving by train, give the walk from Flinders Street over Sandridge Bridge.

Visitors book days ahead; the towers decide in the lift

A riverside business serves two crowds. Someone coming for the Skydeck or a show plans ahead, often from another suburb or state. Someone living above Southgate decides where to eat on the way down. Give each its own answer.

For visitors planning ahead
  • A page covering bookings, group sizes, how long to allow before a show and the walk from the Arts Precinct or Flinders Street.
  • Special hours for show nights and public holidays, and photos from the promenade so they spot you from the river. Add a booking link to the profile so a diner heading to a show can reserve a table from the map.
For residents deciding now
  • Accurate "open now" hours every day, and any takeaway or quick weekday option stated on the profile.
  • Reviews from regulars, so the newest ones aren't all from people who came once.

Which Southbank?

Three riverbanks share the name

Southbank shares its name with two famous riverside areas: South Bank in Brisbane, with its Parklands, and the Southbank Centre in London. Google's suggestions mix all three, from "Southbank restaurants Brisbane" to dentists on London's Jamaica Road.

Closer to home, the convention centre and Polly Woodside are in South Wharf, a separate suburb. Say Southbank VIC 3006 or "Southbank, Melbourne" in your titles and profile, and use the suburb your street address is in. For two neighbouring suburbs, read SEO in Port Melbourne and SEO in South Melbourne.

Who your customers are

Young renters from around the world

The median age is 31. Renters hold 67.0% of homes, mortgage holders 17.7% and outright owners 12.6%, and the median weekly rent is $411.

Only 33.3% were born in Australia, followed by India (9.4%), China (8.9%), Colombia, Malaysia and England, and just 45.4% speak only English at home. Computer system design and cafes and restaurants employ the most residents. Clear prices, online booking and the languages your staff speak can decide who gets the booking.

Southbank questions

Questions from the promenade and the towers

How much does SEO cost for a Southbank business?

Southbank plans with Boltly start at $500 a month for one location, rise to $900 when you add South Melbourne, South Wharf or the CBD, and begin at $1,500 for crowded categories, with no setup fee and no contract to sign. Riverside restaurants and bars chasing the same view searches usually suit the larger plans.

Why does Google show Brisbane's South Bank instead of my business?

Because South Bank in Brisbane and the Southbank Centre in London share the name, and a short search doesn't tell Google which one you mean. Customers near you usually add "Melbourne" or what they want, like a restaurant on the river. Put Southbank VIC 3006 and Melbourne in your profile, page titles and contact details so Google can match you.

How do I get my restaurant into "on the river" and "with a view" searches?

Show it. Add photos of the Yarra from your tables, name the promenade or the bridge you're beside in your description, and ask diners to mention the view in their reviews.

How can a business inside an apartment or office tower be found on Google Maps?

Use your full street address with the suite or floor, pin the right entrance, and add photos of the lobby and street frontage. Say which entrance to use and whether visitors need to buzz up.

I run my business from my Southbank apartment. Should my address show on Google?

If customers don't come to you, no. Google treats a business that visits or delivers to customers as a service-area business: you verify with your real address, then hide it and list the areas you serve. If clients do visit, show the unit number and say how to get past the lobby. And skip the mail-drop address in another tower; Google's guidelines say a virtual office isn't eligible for a Business Profile.

Is it worth adding Mandarin or Spanish to my website?

In Southbank it may be. Mandarin is spoken at home by 11.6% of residents and Spanish by 5.3%. A carefully translated page for your main service can help, and listing the languages your team speaks on your Google profile is an easy place to start.

Google wants a verification video, but my office is on level 30. What do I film?

Google asks you to show where you are, that the business exists and that you run it. On level 30, start outside with the street sign or building name in shot, then walk in and film your suite door or signage, your equipment, and something only staff can reach, such as opening a storeroom with your own keys. On a co-working floor, check first: Google only allows a co-working office with clear signage that receives customers and is staffed by your business during opening hours.

Can my shop inside Southgate have its own Google profile?

Yes. Each business inside a centre can have its own profile at its own address, and it helps to mention Southgate and your level in the description. People search for the Southgate directory and its restaurants, so a complete profile gets you seen there.
