SEO for North Sydney, an office district with a suburb inside it

Fewer than 9,000 people live in North Sydney, yet the Dictionary of Sydney counts its business district among Australia's largest commercial centres. A business here answers two kinds of search: weekday workers after lunch, a meeting room or a supplier, and residents of small apartments looking for everything else. Boltly, a Melbourne-based agency, plans for both.

Updated

The short answer

Small apartments, tall towers and two audiences

The people who live in North Sydney live small. The 2021 Census counted 8,964 residents, 84.4% of homes were flats or apartments, and 31.5% of homes had one bedroom, against 6.6% across NSW. Lone-person households made up 42.3%, and 60.7% of homes were rented.

Residents also work in the same fields as the towers around them: 46.5% are professionals and 20.0% managers, and the largest industries are computer system design (7.9%) and banking (4.7%). Only 12.0% drove to work. The Census was taken on 10 August 2021, during Sydney's lockdown, so the 61.9% who worked at home describes that month, not a normal one.

For a North Sydney business, SEO means reaching weekday workers who search on a phone between meetings and residents of one- and two-bedroom apartments who search at night and on weekends. B2B firms also need service pages that can beat rivals across the harbour, since a business buyer rarely stops at one suburb.

Two stations

The metro moved part of the foot traffic north

Since Victoria Cross metro station opened on 19 August 2024, part of the morning crowd surfaces on Miller Street rather than at North Sydney station, the older Sydney Trains stop. Sydney Metro now calls the line M1.

Two stations mean two morning and evening walking routes, and businesses on Miller Street, Berry Street and McLaren Street now sit on a path that did not exist before 2024. Google also suggests walks from North Sydney station to Mary MacKillop Place, the oval and the Mater Hospital.

Sources: Sydney Metro news, 19 August 2024 (city section opens) and 28 February 2024 (Victoria Cross entrances), and M1 line notice, 20 February 2026; Transport for NSW, North Sydney Station stop page; Google suggestions, 4 October 2026.

Write directions from both stations on your contact page and name the exit to use. If you moved in or changed your hours when the metro opened, check your Business Profile caught up.

The workday clock

Four times of day, four different searchers

Weekday arrivals, the lunch rush, desk research and residents after hours each search differently. Even Mary MacKillop Place, at 9 to 11 Mount Street, runs a "Midday Pause" from 11.30am to 1pm for people on their lunch break, which tells you who is nearby at that hour.

7am to 9am

Arrivals

Commuters coming out of two stations. Coffee, breakfast and dry cleaning drop-offs, searched on the walk from the platform.

11.30am to 2pm

Lunch hour

The busiest window for "open now" food searches, quick appointments and pharmacy stops. Hours on your profile have to be exact.

9am to 5pm

Desk research

Office managers comparing suppliers, accountants, lawyers and IT services. They read service pages, not just the map.

Evenings, weekends

Residents

People in small apartments looking for gyms, groceries, takeaway, cleaners and trades close to home.

North Sydney Oval, run by the council, is home to the North Sydney Bears and also hosts cricket and women's AFL, so weekends have crowds of their own. If your trade depends on them, keep weekend hours accurate and say whether you open on game days.

Ask the concierge

Which North Sydney do people mean?

Google's suggestions for North Sydney mix the suburb with a council, a football club, a swimming pool and a town in Canada. Your listing has to make clear which one you are.

Suburb or council

North Sydney Council covers more than North Sydney

The suburb is the council's administrative centre, but the council area also takes in neighbours such as Neutral Bay. Write North Sydney NSW 2060 only if that is your suburb; if you are in Neutral Bay, see SEO Neutral Bay.

Is it the CBD?

"Is North Sydney CBD?"

People ask. It is a separate business district, across the harbour about 3 km north of the GPO. Saying "North Sydney CBD" on your page is fine if that is how your customers describe it.

Other places

North Sydney, Nova Scotia

Google suggests "is north sydney in nova scotia", because there is a North Sydney in Canada too. Add NSW and 2060 to your title, profile and directory listings so there is no doubt.

On the state's suburb boundaries, North Sydney touches nine suburbs, among them Crows Nest, Waverton, Neutral Bay and McMahons Point, and Kirribilli and Milsons Point down at the harbour. If your clients come from across the bridge as well, our page on SEO in the Sydney CBD covers that market, and SEO Chatswood covers the next business centre up the North Shore line.

Memos from the lift lobby

Verifying a suite on level 12, quiet Fridays, and a report that says nothing

Working from a North Sydney tower rather than a shopfront brings three problems, and each has a practical fix.

Verification

Google wants a video, and your office is on level 12

Video verification has strict rules: one live, unedited recording of at least 30 seconds, made on a phone through your Business Profile, with no other people's faces. Plan the route before you press record:

  1. Start on Miller Street or your own street sign and the building number.
  2. Film the lobby directory with your name on it, then the signage at your suite door.
  3. Open the office door with your key or pass, or log in at your own front desk, to show you manage it.

If your name isn't on any permanent sign, sort that out with building management first, because the name in the video must match the profile.

Office days

Lunch trade follows the office days, not the calendar

Many office workers now split the week between home and the tower, so a lunch bar on Berry Street can be flat one day and full the next. Your profile should say what you actually do: if you close early on Fridays, set those hours, and if you open on Saturdays for residents, say so.

Then give the slower days their own reason to search, such as a catering order page for the firms upstairs or a weekend menu for the apartments. Track calls and orders by weekday to see whether it worked.

Reporting

You pay every month and can't see what changed

Real work leaves evidence. Ask for a monthly log that lists the pages edited or published with their addresses, the profile changes made, any technical fixes, and every link earned with the linking page.

Check it yourself in Search Console and in your site's page history. A report that is the same template each month with a few ranking screenshots is a warning sign, whoever sends it.

How we work

Five floors, taken in order

Each month the work climbs the same five floors, over calls, email and video. Boltly is Melbourne-based and has no North Sydney office.

North Sydney questions

Suite numbers matter in a tower address

How can a North Sydney business rank on Google?

Get the basics exact first: a Google Business Profile with your full address including level and suite, true weekday and weekend hours, and the closest category, then a strong page for each service and a steady run of reviews. In its Business Profile help, Google says local ranking mainly comes down to relevance, distance and popularity, and it discusses reviews under the heading of prominence. B2B firms also need service pages good enough to compete beyond the suburb.

What is the postcode for North Sydney?

2060. Write North Sydney NSW 2060 in full on your profile and listings, because Google also suggests North Sydney in Nova Scotia, Canada.

Is North Sydney part of the Sydney CBD?

No. It is its own business district, across the harbour about 3 km north of the GPO, and North Sydney Council is based at 200 Miller Street.

What do SEO services in North Sydney cost?

It is $500 a month on Starter, $900 on Growth or $1,500 on Performance, as published, and none of the three carries a setup fee or a contract term. A lunch bar usually fits Starter; a law or IT firm competing with CBD rivals usually needs Growth or Performance.

Is cheap SEO worth it for a North Sydney business?

Only if you can see exactly what is done each month. Very low prices usually buy automated reports or bulk links that Google's spam policies warn against. Before you sign with anyone, ask for a sample monthly change log and keep ownership of your own Search Console and Analytics accounts.

How do I choose an SEO agency or consultant for a North Sydney firm?

Ignore "best" claims, including ours, and ask four things in writing: what they would check first, who does the work, what you own if you leave, and how they report. You should hold the Business Profile, Analytics, Search Console and domain in your own name, with the agency given access. Our guide on how to choose an SEO agency lists more questions.

Do you have an office in North Sydney?

No. Boltly is based in Melbourne and works with North Sydney businesses remotely. If you specifically want a North Sydney SEO company you can visit, we are not it; if you want the work done carefully and reported plainly, we are happy to talk.

How long does North Sydney SEO take?

Google's own starter guide to SEO warns that a change might register in a few hours, or only after several months. A corrected address or hours can show quickly; service pages competing with established CBD firms take much longer. We show you where you start so progress is measurable.

Google suggested "north sydney postcode" and "seo agency north sydney", along with the CBD, Nova Scotia and Victoria Cross searches quoted above, when we checked on 4 October 2026. The cost, cheap and timing questions are our own.
