Local SEO for Darwin businesses
When someone in Darwin searches for a plumber, a cafe or a dentist, Google shows a map and a short list of nearby businesses before any website. Local SEO is the work of getting into that list, whether you trade in the CBD, Nightcliff, Wishart or Palmerston. Boltly sets up and looks after your Google Business Profile, your location pages and your reviews, with no lock-in.

What local SEO does for a Darwin business
Google's help pages put it simply: "When a customer searches for a business or place near their location, they'll find local results on Google Maps and Search." Its advice for becoming one of those results comes down to six switches, and every one of them is free to flip.
Local SEO for a Darwin business means a verified Google Business Profile with complete, accurate details, reviews you reply to, fresh photos, and a website that backs up where you are and what you do. As Google says, "Businesses with complete and accurate info are more likely to show up in local search results."

Google's sentence says "popularity"; the section heading below it still says "Prominence".
What you control in Greater Darwin
- RelevanceThe right primary category and a services list in the words people search
- DistanceA real address, or a service area that names Darwin and Palmerston
- ProminenceA steady run of reviews and links from Top End organisations
- AccuracyHours, phone and address kept current, as Google's tips ask
Relevance, distance and popularity
Google's own words: "Local results are mainly based on relevance, distance, and popularity. Together, these factors help Google find the best match for customers' searches."
The third factor sits under the heading Prominence, which "means how well-known a business is" and draws on "how many websites link to your business and how many reviews you have." None of it is for sale: "There's no way to request or pay for a better local ranking on Google." In Greater Darwin, distance bites hard: Palmerston sits about 20 km from the CBD, so a plumber based in one is a long way from a searcher in the other unless the service area and website say otherwise.

More of your customers are searching from the east
Greater Darwin reached 159,284 people at 30 June 2025, 2,719 more than a year earlier, while the rest of the territory grew by 950. The growth is uneven: Berrimah, east of Darwin City, added 530 people, a 22% jump, and Palmerston South and Darwin City each grew by 3.9%.
Palmerston South had the largest natural increase, Berrimah the largest gain from elsewhere in Australia and Darwin City the largest from overseas. If you serve the eastern suburbs, show it with a service area and a page for each place you cover. The ABS also places Greater Darwin's centre of population in Wishart, south of the Stuart Highway, not in the CBD.

WestYear to 30 June 2025East
- Darwin City+320 · 3.9%Largest overseas gain: 430
- Berrimah+530 · 22%Largest gain from elsewhere in Australia: 480
- Palmerston South+340 · 3.9%Largest natural increase: 150
Not to scale. The ABS describes Berrimah as east, and Palmerston South as south-east, of Darwin City.
Write your suburb and NT so Google puts you in the right council
Greater Darwin isn't one council. The City of Darwin takes in the CBD and the northern suburbs such as Nightcliff, while the City of Palmerston, which describes itself as about 20 km south of Darwin, runs a 72 square kilometre municipality of 41,538 people with a median age of 31. It is a young city, and Google's own suggestions for Palmerston lean local: medical clinics, the hospital, the water park and takeaway.
People search by area, for shops in the Darwin CBD or restaurants in Palmerston NT, and Palmerston North, a city in New Zealand, turns up beside Palmerston NT in Google's suggestions. Google also offers the 0830 and 0831 postcodes after Palmerston NT, which tells you people check the postcode. Put your suburb in your profile and page titles, and write Darwin NT or Palmerston NT rather than the name alone.

No shopfront to film, a home address to hide and reviews that vanish
A lot of Top End businesses run from a ute, a shed or a spare room, which is where Google Business Profile gets awkward. Each of these three faults can be cleared without breaking Google's rules.
Fault 1Verification
Google wants a video, and there's no shopfront to film
Google decides which verification methods you're offered, and for many new profiles that means a video.
On a live video call, Google asks to see where you are (a street sign, nearby businesses or outside signage), proof the business exists (tools, branded equipment, a signed vehicle) and proof you run it, such as keys opening the shed or van, staff-only areas or non-sensitive paperwork.
Plan one short, continuous take before you start. If every option fails, Google's help pages say to contact support rather than open a second profile.
Fault 2Address
You work from home and don't want customers at the door
If you go to your customers, you're a service-area business. You still verify with your real address, then turn off "Show business address to customers" and list where you work. Google's guidelines say service-area businesses should hide the address, and you can list up to 20 areas within about two hours' drive.
What you must not do is rent a mailbox to look established. Google says a virtual office isn't eligible for a profile and PO boxes aren't acceptable addresses, and a fake address puts the whole listing at risk. In Greater Darwin, list Palmerston as a service area only if you really take jobs there.
Fault 3Reviews
A customer's review disappeared
Google runs automated spam detection on reviews, and its help page admits the system can occasionally remove legitimate ones. Reviews posted from the same place as the business, a burst of reviews in one week, or reviews from family and staff are the usual suspects, and the last two break Google's conflict-of-interest rules anyway.
If a genuine review vanished, contact Business Profile support and give the reviewer's name and date. Then keep asking every customer in the same steady way, through the wet as well as the dry, so one lost review doesn't matter much.

Keep your profile current in both seasons
Google's second tip is to "Keep your business information up-to-date", and in Darwin that means planning for two seasons. The Bureau of Meteorology's long-term averages for Darwin Airport show about 1,370 mm of the year's 1,737 mm falling from December to March, and under 45 mm in total from May to September.
If your hours, services or stock change with the weather, set special hours, post an update when plans change, and add new photos each season so your profile looks like what customers find when they arrive. A profile that says you're open when you're not costs you a review as well as a sale.

- Refresh your photos and seasonal services
- Post what's on
- Set special hours if weather closes you
- Post access updates and answer questions quickly
Reply formulaFor every review, good or bad
- 1Thank them by name
- 2Mention what they liked
- 3If something went wrong, say how you're fixing it
- 4Say what happens next, or invite them back
- AskEvery customer, with a short link or QR code
- AnswerWithin a few days, while it still matters
- In the wetKeep asking from December to March so your newest review stays recent
- NeverOffer a discount or gift in exchange for a review; Google's policies prohibit it
- Check monthlyThe date of your newest review and any you haven't answered
- WatchReviews that name the wrong suburb or service, and correct the profile
Reviews that help you rank, replies that help you win
Google covers reviews in two of its tips: "When you reply to customer reviews, it shows that you value their feedback. Positive reviews and helpful replies can help your business stand out." Under Prominence it adds: "More reviews and positive ratings can help your business's local ranking."
So ask every customer, make it easy with a short link, and reply to every review within a few days. Our review management guide and Google Business Profile guide cover the details.
Timing matters in the Top End. BrightLocal's 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey found 74% of consumers only care about reviews from the last three months. If most of your reviews arrive in the busy dry months, they're already old by the time the wet sets in, so keep asking through December to March as well.

Darwin questions on the map, profiles and reviews
How much does local SEO cost in Darwin?
Local SEO with Boltly starts at $500 a month for one Darwin location, $900 to cover more areas such as Palmerston, and $1,500 for competitive categories, all without a lock-in contract.
What's the difference between local SEO and national SEO?
Local SEO targets searches with a place in them, or searches Google treats as local, like "plumber" typed on a phone in Darwin. It centres on your Google Business Profile, reviews and location pages. National SEO targets searches from anywhere in Australia and relies more on content and links. If your customers live between the CBD and Palmerston, start with local SEO.
How do I create or claim a Google Business Profile?
Find your business on Google Maps or go to Google Business Profile, sign in with a Google account and follow the steps to add or claim it. Google will then ask you to verify, the first of its tips for local ranking, so finish that before anything else.
Do Google reviews affect my local ranking?
Yes. Google lists the number of reviews and positive ratings among the things that help local ranking. A steady flow of reviews is worth more than a burst.
Can a Palmerston business show up in Darwin searches?
It can, but distance works against you for people searching in the CBD. If you travel to customers, set a service area that covers Darwin, and add a useful page for Darwin on your website.
Can I get a Google Business Profile if I work from home in Darwin?
Yes. If you travel to customers you're a service-area business: verify with your real address, hide it from customers and list the suburbs you serve. Google says a mailbox or virtual office isn't an eligible address.
What are some examples of local SEO work?
Verifying your profile, choosing the right categories, keeping hours exact, adding photos, writing a page for each service and area, listing your business consistently on directories, asking for reviews and replying to them, and earning links from local organisations. Our local citations guide explains the directory part.
