Local SEO for Hobart businesses, on both sides of the Derwent
When someone in Sandy Bay, Glenorchy or Bellerive looks for a physio or somewhere for lunch, Google answers with a map and a handful of nearby businesses. Local SEO is the work of earning a place in that handful. Below are the questions Hobart owners type into Google, such as how to rank on Google Maps and how to get a business on Google for free. Boltly is a Melbourne-based business that sets up and looks after your Google Business Profile, reviews and suburb pages, from $500 a month with no lock-in.

Three columns hold up every local result
Google's help page on local ranking says local results are mainly based on relevance, meaning how closely your profile fits what someone typed; distance, meaning how far you are from the person searching; and popularity, which it explains under the heading Prominence as "how well-known a business is". It also says a higher spot can't be requested or paid for.
For a Hobart business, that means a verified profile with the right primary category, a true address or service area, hours that match your door, real photos and a steady flow of genuine reviews you answer. A website with a clear page for each service and each part of town you cover backs all of it up.

Distance matters more when there's a river in the way
Greater Hobart had 255,250 people at 30 June 2025, up just 542 in a year, and the shores didn't move together. The City of Hobart lost 138 residents and Glenorchy 237, while Clarence on the eastern shore gained 269 and Rokeby, up 240, grew faster than anywhere else in Greater Hobart. At the 2021 Census, 60 per cent of working residents drove to work, so customers think in drives and bridge crossings.
Because distance is one of Google's three factors, a business in North Hobart won't automatically show for someone searching in Bellerive. If you travel to customers, hide your street address and set a service area that names the suburbs you really cover. If you have a shopfront, keep the pin exact and write the suburb in your page titles. At the 2021 Census, 85.1 per cent of Greater Hobart homes were separate houses, so trades and home services get searched suburb by suburb. For the full city picture, see SEO in Hobart.

Ask every happy customer, and never pay for it
It says "Reviews and other user contributions to Google Maps must reflect a genuine experience", and that offering free or discounted goods in exchange for reviews "is considered fake & misleading content and is strictly prohibited".
It recommends asking customers to visit a Google link or scan a QR code, and replying so people can see their feedback matters. For a Hobart cafe that's a card on the table; for a tradie it's a text after the job. For a stallholder at Salamanca Market, which the City of Hobart calls Tasmania's most visited tourism attraction, it's a QR code on the stall sign, because a visitor who bought from you on Saturday may be on a plane by Monday. Reply to every review, good or bad, with something specific. Our review management guide has the wording we use.

- Never trade for reviewsNo gifts, no discounts, no deals
- Fix, then say soA bad review is a free audit
- Ask on the dayMarket and show visitors rarely come back to be asked
- Check each monthThe date of your newest review, and any left unanswered
The third habit is Google's own rule.
A one-star review from a stranger, a number that rings elsewhere and a winter closure
Hobart runs on word of mouth, so these three problems get noticed.
A one-star review from someone who was never a customer
Google says you can report any review, but only those that break its policies are removed, and it doesn't step into disagreements between a business and a customer. A review that is spam, off-topic, from a competitor or ex-employee, or posted from several accounts by one person qualifies; one that is merely unfair usually doesn't.
Report it from your profile with the right reason, then track it in the Reviews Management Tool. Google says evaluation typically takes several days, and if it's kept you get one appeal. Meanwhile reply once, calmly and factually, because the next customer reads your reply as well as the stars. Never pay a service that promises to remove reviews.
The number on Google doesn't ring your shop any more
Providers sometimes swap your main number for a call-tracking number, or an old number lingers on directories after a move. When the contract ends, the tracking number can die with it, and calls from the map go nowhere.
Google's guidelines ask for a phone number that connects to your own business location, and say not to use numbers that redirect callers to anyone else. If you do track calls, make sure the number is in your name and forwards to you, keep your real number on your website and directory listings, and check the profile each time you change providers.
We close for part of winter. Should the profile say closed?
Plenty of Hobart tourism and hospitality businesses trade differently in winter. Leave year-round hours up and people arrive to a locked door, then say so in a review.
Google's guidelines cover this: during the season, set your normal hours and use special hours for holidays or events. In the off-season you can mark the business as temporarily closed, then set regular hours again when you reopen. Don't mark it permanently closed, and post a short update saying when you'll be back.

Hobart's calendar changes what people search
Salamanca Market runs every Saturday from 8.30 am to 3 pm with more than 300 stalls. The Royal Hobart Show is on 22 to 24 October 2026; the organisers say about 51,000 people came in 2025. The Christmas Pageant comes through the CBD on 21 November, and the Big Switch-On lights the tree at Mawson Place a week later.
If you open longer on market days or close for the show, set special hours on your profile before the day, not after. Post an update when you change a menu or a service, and add new photos each season, because a winter shopfront and a summer one look different.

Google Maps questions from Hobart owners
How much does local SEO cost in Hobart?
Our local SEO for one Hobart location starts from $500 a month, covering both shores starts from $900, and crowded categories start from $1,500, all monthly with no lock-in. For how that compares nationally, read SEO costs in Australia.
What is local SEO?
It's the work of showing up when people search for a business near them, mostly on Google Maps and in the map results on Google Search. It covers your Google Business Profile, your reviews and the pages on your website that say where you are. Our guide to what local SEO is goes further.
How does local SEO work?
Google's help pages say local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and popularity. Local SEO improves the parts you control: an accurate, complete profile, a clear location or service area, genuine reviews and a website that matches.
How long does local SEO take?
It varies with your category and your starting point. Google's own starter guide says some changes "might take effect in a few hours, others could take several months". Fixing a broken or incomplete profile is often the quickest win.
Is local SEO worth it?
For a business that serves people nearby, usually yes, because the map often appears near the top of local searches and costs nothing to appear in. It's less useful if you sell only online or nationally.
How do I rank higher on Google Maps?
Verify your profile, choose the most accurate primary category, keep hours and details current, add real photos, and earn and answer genuine reviews. Google says there's no way to pay for a better local ranking.
Why is my business not showing on Google Maps?
The usual causes are an unverified or suspended profile, a hidden address with no service area, or a category that doesn't match what people search. Check the profile's status first; our Google Business Profile guide walks through it.
