Small business SEO, in plain words
Small business SEO is the same craft as any SEO, cut down to what moves the needle for a business with one location, a few staff and no marketing department. For many Brisbane owners that means being found in the map and for a handful of services, nearby, by people ready to buy.
It is a crowded field. The City of Brisbane council area had 145,916 actively trading businesses in June 2025, and 91,188 of them had no employees. Health care and social assistance grew fastest of the big groups, from 12,934 businesses in 2022 to 15,180, so a physio, psychologist or NDIS provider in Brisbane is competing with far more local rivals than three years ago.
In practice: a complete Google Business Profile, a page per service, steady reviews, a site that loads fast on a phone and a monthly report on calls and enquiries.

Is SEO worth it for a small business? Sometimes not yet
The answer depends on whether people already search for what you sell, and whether you can wait a few months for the return.
Likely worth it when
- People search for your service with a suburb or "near me"
- One new customer is worth hundreds of dollars or more to you
- You can handle more work in the next six months
- Competitors in the map have fewer or weaker reviews than you could earn
Probably not yet when
- You need customers this week, not in three months
- Nobody searches for what you sell, because it's brand new
- Your website or booking system can't handle more enquiries
- The average sale is too small to cover even a modest plan
If you land in the second column, we'll tell you in the free review and suggest what to do instead. Our article on whether SEO is worth it runs the numbers.
What you can do yourself, and where help pays off
Many owners can handle the basics without paying anyone. The time to bring in help is when the basics are done and you are still not showing up, or when the work needs skills you don't have time to learn.

Flooded, storm-damaged or without power: keep customers informed online
Brisbane businesses know the pattern from past floods and storms: days or weeks closed, then the slow job of telling everyone you're back, and search is where most people check. If your Google profile still says "Open" while the shop is shut, people turn up to a locked door; if it says nothing when you reopen, they assume you're still closed and ring someone else. Most of this takes minutes, if you know where the settings are.
Tell Google, and your site
- In your Business Profile, set special hours for the dates you're shut, or mark the business as temporarily closed.
- Put a short notice at the top of your website with the reason and a likely reopening date, and record the same message on your voicemail.
Say where to find you
- If you're trading from a temporary site or by appointment, say so on the website and in a profile update, but leave your main profile address alone unless the move is permanent.
- Answer the questions customers ask in reviews and messages, briefly and the same way each time.
Switch it all back
- Remove the special hours or the temporarily closed status the day you open.
- Post photos of the shop open again.
- Ask your regulars for a review in the first few weeks, so new activity shows on your profile.

Small business SEO in Brisbane: straight answers
How much does SEO cost for a small business in Brisbane?
With Boltly, small business SEO starts at $500 a month, or roughly $16 a day, and runs month to month. Growth is $900 and Performance is $1,500 for busier categories. When comparing quotes, check what's included and who does the work.
How long before a small business sees results from SEO?
Google's starter guide says a change might register within hours or need several months, and a few weeks is a fair wait before deciding whether it worked. Profile fixes are usually the quickest to go live; rankings for crowded services in Brisbane take longer to build. See how long SEO takes for a fuller picture.
Can anyone guarantee my business a number one ranking?
No. Google itself states that no one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google, so treat guarantees as a warning sign. What an honest agency can promise is the work, the reporting and a straight answer when something isn't working.
Do I need Google Ads as well as SEO?
Not always. Ads bring clicks immediately and stop when you stop paying, while SEO builds slowly and keeps working. The mistake to avoid is splitting a small budget so thinly that neither works: a few dollars a day on ads plus a cut-price SEO plan usually buys too little of both. Pick the one that fits your timing, fund it properly, and add the other when the first is paying for itself. We compare the two in SEO vs Google Ads.
How do I show up in the Google map pack in Brisbane?
Complete your Google Business Profile, choose the most accurate category, keep hours current, add real photos and ask every customer for a review. On Google's own account, map results rest mainly on relevance, distance and popularity; filling in every detail of the profile is what feeds the relevance part.
How will I know if SEO is working for my business?
Each month you get a one-page report of calls and website clicks from your Google profile, enquiries from your website and where you rank for the searches that matter to you. If the numbers aren't moving, we say so and explain what we are changing.
Someone else has claimed my Google Business Profile. How do I get it back?
Use Google's request-ownership process. Go to business.google.com/add, search for your business, and when Google says someone else may manage the profile, choose Request access and fill in the form. Google emails the current owner, who has three days to respond. If they don't, you may get the option to claim and verify the profile yourself; if they refuse, you can appeal. It's often a former web designer, agency or staff member, so ask them nicely first. From then on, keep yourself as the primary owner and add any agency, including us, as a manager.
