Small business SEO from a Melbourne-based team

Boltly is based in Melbourne, so the city's new estates, new stations and crowded inner suburbs are the streets we know first. Owners here search for small business SEO, then for cheap SEO, then wonder whether cheap is a trap. It often is. This page sets out what good work costs and what you can do yourself this week.

The short version

What small business SEO means for a Melbourne owner

For a small Melbourne business, SEO is mostly about the next suburb over, not the whole country. It's the work that puts you in the map and on page one when someone a suburb or two away searches for what you do, in a metro area that added more people in 2024 to 25 than any other Australian capital.

That work covers five things: a complete Google Business Profile, a page for each service, honest reviews coming in every month, a quick site that works on a phone, and one clear report so you can see what your money bought.

+105,000more people in Greater Melbourne in a year, the biggest rise of any capital
+19,581more businesses in Victoria, 2025 to 26
64.6%of Australian businesses have no employees

Cheap or affordable?

Six red flags in "cheap SEO Melbourne" offers

These six turn up again and again in cheap SEO quotes, and any one of them can cost you more than it saves. Affordable SEO does less, but does it properly.

A guaranteed first place on Google

Google says no one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google.

Hundreds of links for a flat fee

Bulk links from unrelated sites are the kind Google ignores or penalises.

You don't own your accounts

Your Google profile and analytics should always be in your name.

A 12-month lock-in

Good work keeps clients without a contract forcing them to stay.

Reports full of vanity numbers

Impressions and "keywords tracked" mean little without calls and enquiries.

Fifty copied suburb pages

Swapping one suburb name for another rarely ranks and can look like spam.

If a quote has two or more of these, keep looking. Our guide to choosing an SEO agency has more questions to ask.

Where the new customers are

Melbourne's biggest growth is on the edges, and they need everything

The three areas that added the most people anywhere in Australia in the year to June 2025 were all on Melbourne's western and northern fringes. Fraser Rise and Plumpton also had the third-highest growth rate in the country, about 20% in a single year. New estates mean thousands of households with no favourite plumber, dentist, childcare centre or cafe yet.

If you serve these areas, a page for each one, the right service areas on your Google profile and reviews from local jobs can get you in front of people before a competitor builds a following. Inner Melbourne is changing too: Carlton had the largest net overseas migration gain in Victoria (1,800 people), worth knowing if you run a cafe or clinic near the universities.

New ways into the city

Five new stations have moved Melbourne's foot traffic

The Metro Tunnel opened at the end of 2025 with five new underground stations at Arden, Parkville, State Library, Town Hall and Anzac, and the new network-wide timetable began on Sunday 1 February 2026.

A shop or clinic within walking distance of a new station can pick up customers who never passed its door before. Name the nearest station, say Parkville or Town Hall, in your directions and profile, and check your map pin and photos show the entrance people actually use.

Before you sign

Read the cancellation clause before the first invoice

The complaint small business owners raise most on business forums about SEO goes like this: a 12-month contract, little to show for it by month six, and a bill for the remaining months when they try to leave.

If you're already in one, you have some protection. Since 9 November 2023, the ACCC explains, proposing, using or relying on unfair terms in standard form contracts is banned, with penalties. For contracts made, renewed or changed from that date, a small business is covered if it has fewer than 100 employees or turns over less than $10 million a year. The ACCC's examples of terms that may be unfair include ones that let only one side end the contract, or penalise only one side for ending it. Only a court can decide a term is unfair, so ask the agency in writing to change the term and list the work done each month, and get legal advice before you stop paying. This is general information, not legal advice.

While things are still friendly, check whose name is on your domain. Enter your .com.au in the auDA WHOIS tool at whois.auda.org.au and look at the registrant. If it shows your designer's or agency's business, ask for it to be moved into your name now, while it's easy. Then ask what happens to the pages, content and links if you cancel. With us, everything written or built for you stays on your site and in your name after you stop.

Melbourne owners ask

What Melbourne owners ask before they hire

How much does small business SEO cost in Melbourne?

Boltly's small business plans start at $500 a month, then $900 and $1,500 for wider coverage or busier categories, all month to month. That's Starter, Growth and Performance, with no setup fee and no lock-in. Whoever you hire, ask exactly what the monthly fee pays for in hours and deliverables.

Is SEO important for a small business?

For most local businesses, yes, because customers look you up before they call or visit. If your competitors appear in the map and you don't, they get those customers by default. The exceptions are businesses nobody searches for yet, where other marketing comes first.

How quickly will I see results from SEO in Melbourne?

Google's SEO starter guide says a change might show in a few hours or take several months, and suggests waiting a few weeks before judging it. Crowded inner-city categories tend to sit at the slow end. Our article on how long SEO takes explains why.

What's the difference between affordable and cheap SEO?

Affordable SEO does a smaller amount of legitimate work: your profile, key pages, reviews and reporting. Cheap SEO often cuts corners with bulk links, copied pages or promises no one can keep, and some of those shortcuts can damage your rankings.

Can I do SEO for my small business myself?

Yes, the basics. Keep your Google profile complete, add photos, ask for reviews and answer customer questions on your site. Bring in help when technical problems, content planning or competition get beyond the time you have. Compare the options in DIY SEO vs an agency.

How important is my Google Business Profile?

For a local business, it's often the single most valuable thing to get right. It decides whether you appear in the map, shows your hours and reviews, and is where many customers call you from without ever visiting your website.

Can you target my suburb rather than all of Melbourne?

Yes, and for most small businesses that's the smart choice. We focus on the suburbs you really serve, with a page and reviews for each, rather than chasing "Melbourne" searches you can't realistically win. See examples like SEO in Preston.

How do I know what I'm getting for my money?

You get a monthly report showing the work done and the results: calls, website enquiries, direction requests and map positions for the searches we agreed on. We explain it in plain words, as set out in SEO reporting explained.

Can I get out of a 12-month SEO contract?

Start by reading the termination clause, then ask the agency in writing for an itemised list of the work done and whether it will let you leave early. The ACCC says unfair terms in standard form contracts with small businesses have been banned since 9 November 2023, but only a court decides whether a particular term is unfair, so get legal advice before you stop paying. This is general information, not legal advice.
