Small business SEO for Sydney owners

Greater Sydney had 646,689 businesses at 30 June 2025, and 97.6% of them had fewer than 20 employees. Most owners don't have time to study search, and Google's suggestions show the questions they ask: whether SEO is worth it, what it costs and how long it takes. Boltly answers them in plain terms and publishes its prices.

The short answer

Almost every Sydney business has fewer than 20 staff

Small business SEO is the work of getting a business with a handful of staff, or none, found on Google by the people who need it. In Greater Sydney that covers almost everyone: 631,176 of the 646,689 businesses counted at 30 June 2025 had fewer than 20 employees.

For a Sydney small business, it usually means a Google Business Profile that follows Google's rules, a website page for each service and area, reviews you ask for and answer, and a monthly report you can read in two minutes. There's no advertising spend involved and no contract that locks you in.

Who's in business

Eight lanes of Sydney business

The Harbour Bridge carries eight lanes of traffic, and Sydney's business counts line up across eight too. Construction leads with 107,079 businesses, just ahead of professional, scientific and technical services at 103,090.

In the busiest lanes the competition on Google is heavy, so a builder or an accountant needs sharper pages and more reviews than a business in a quieter category. NSW also added more businesses than any other state in 2025 to 2026, a net 26,057.

Where the businesses are

Sydney's council areas run on different kinds of business

Sydney has more than one business centre, and the ABS counts show how different they are. The City of Sydney council area had 85,193 businesses at 30 June 2025, led by professional, scientific and technical services (18,661) and then finance and insurance (14,993). The City of Parramatta had 34,124, and its biggest group was construction (5,539). North Sydney and Willoughby, which takes in Chatswood, lean to professional services, while in Canterbury-Bankstown and Blacktown the trades and transport businesses outnumber the offices.

This matters for search because distance is one of the three things Google says local results mainly rest on, with relevance and popularity. A Parramatta builder competes with the other 5,500 or so construction businesses registered in that council area and the ones next door, not with every firm in the CBD. So write pages for the district you're in and the areas you actually serve, and don't list an address you don't trade from: Google says virtual offices aren't eligible for a Business Profile.

When SEO pays off, and when to wait

SEO pays off when people search for what you sell and you can wait months for it to build. It's also the first question Google suggests after small business SEO in Sydney.

Google's own SEO Starter Guide is blunt that nothing in it will automatically put a site first. If customers mostly find you through referrals, or already know where you are, a tidy Google profile may be all you need for now. If they search before they buy, SEO deserves a proper try. Many owners can do the basics themselves.

Google's rules

What Google says about local rankings

Google's help pages put it plainly: "Local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and popularity", and they say outright that you can't request or pay for a better local ranking.

Google explains the third factor under the heading Prominence: how well known a business is, including links to it and how many reviews it has. The profile guidelines add rules that often trip up small businesses: your name should match the real-world name customers know, virtual offices aren't eligible, service-area businesses "should hide your business address", and categories shouldn't be used as keywords.

Help and hiring

Free help in Sydney, and what to ask an agency

Before paying anyone, use the free help. The Service NSW Business Bureau can connect you with "free advice from experienced, independent advisors", by phone or in person, and the City of Sydney promises "Free support, learning opportunities and practical tools". Its October 2026 listings even include a course on building your own WordPress website.

If you do hire, the Australian Small Business and Family Enterprise Ombudsman has advice for digital marketing providers that works as a checklist: be clear about cost and "timeframes for results", "Clearly, transparently, and regularly" report results, include a dispute clause, "Ensure a simple exit process", and hand back "the client's access and assets". Hold any provider to it, us included.

Three SEO promises that cost Sydney owners more later

Guaranteed rankings, cheap bulk links and agency-held websites come up again and again in owners' forum stories. Each has a plain question that tests it.

"Page one, guaranteed"

Google's guide to hiring an SEO says no one can guarantee a #1 ranking, and warns about anyone selling a "priority submit" to Google. A guarantee usually covers a phrase nobody searches, or comes with refund conditions you'll never meet.

Ask instead: what work will you do, how will we measure enquiries, and what happens if nothing has moved by month six?

"500 backlinks for $99"

Google's spam policies list buying or selling links for ranking purposes as link spam. When a reviewer at Google finds it, the site can get a manual action and rank lower or drop out of results. If links were bought for you in the past, open Search Console and check the Manual actions report.

Ask instead: will you send me every link you build, with the page it sits on?

"We'll host it all for you"

A website hosted and owned by the agency can disappear with the agency. Owners describe ending a contract and finding pages pulled or the site gone from Google. That's why the ASBFEO's list above asks for access and assets to be handed back.

Ask instead: will the content, code and any links stay mine if I cancel, and can I hold my own admin login from day one?

Owners ask

Small business SEO questions from Sydney

How much does SEO cost for a small business in Sydney?

Boltly's small business plans in Sydney start from $500 a month for one location, from $900 for several suburbs and from $1,500 for competitive fields, with no fixed term. We publish prices because the ASBFEO tells digital marketing providers to be clear about cost. For how agencies usually price SEO, read what SEO costs in Australia.

Is SEO worth it for a small business?

It's worth it when people search for what you sell in the area you serve, and less urgent if nearly all your work comes from referrals. Google says there are no secrets that'll automatically put you first, so judge any plan by the work it includes and the reports you get.

How long does SEO take to work?

Google's SEO Starter Guide says results vary: some changes appear "in a few hours", while others "could take several months". Fixing a Business Profile can show quickly, while new pages and reviews build up over months. Be wary of anyone who promises a ranking by a set date.

Can I do SEO myself?

Yes, and many owners should start that way. Claim your Google Business Profile, use your real business name, pick accurate categories, add hours and photos, and ask every customer for a review. Bring in help when the time it takes starts costing you paid work.

What is local SEO?

Local SEO is the part of SEO that gets you into Google's local results and Maps for searches near you. Google says those results are "mainly based on relevance, distance and popularity", so it comes down to a complete profile, a relevant website and a steady flow of reviews and links. See local SEO in Sydney for the full service.

How do I improve my Google Business Profile?

Follow Google's guidelines: use your real-world business name, choose categories that describe the business rather than keywords, keep hours and photos current and reply to reviews. If you visit customers rather than host them, set a service area and hide your address; Google says that area shouldn't extend farther than about 2 hours of driving time.

What counts as a small business in Australia?

The ABS defines small businesses as those with fewer than 20 employees, and the ATO's common test is turnover under $10 million. By the ABS measure, 97.6% of the businesses in Greater Sydney were small at 30 June 2025.

Where can a Sydney small business get free help?

The Service NSW Business Bureau connects you with free advice from independent advisors on 13 77 88, weekdays 8am to 5pm, with interpreters on 13 14 50 and in-person help. The City of Sydney's business concierge is on 02 9265 9909, and the council lists talks, courses and workshops for local businesses.

Can an SEO company guarantee first page on Google?

No. Google's guide to hiring an SEO says no one can guarantee a #1 ranking. Treat a guarantee as a reason to ask harder questions: what work is included, how enquiries will be measured, and what happens if nothing improves.

Where these came from: Google's autocomplete for small business and Sydney searches on 15 September 2026, turned into full questions where needed. The last one is a problem owners raise on business forums.
