Local SEO: Plumber, Melbourne | Boltly
Case study

A Melbourne plumber went from buried in search to top of the map pack

A family-run plumbing business covering Melbourne's eastern suburbs was missing the calls that matter most, the urgent ones. Over about seven months we fixed how Google read their business, and the map pack started sending them work day and night.

The challenge

Where the client started

The two brothers behind this business had been on the tools across Melbourne's eastern suburbs for years, taking on blocked drains, hot water swaps, burst pipes and bathroom fit-outs. Their trade was solid. Their problem was that almost nobody could find them when a tap was flooding a kitchen at nine at night.

When someone in Melbourne types "plumber near me" or "emergency plumber Box Hill", Google shows a small box of three businesses with a map above the regular results. That box, the local pack, is where the calls go. Our client was nowhere near it. Their Google Business Profile sat unverified for one of their suburbs, used a vague category and pointed to a depot address that confused the map. Their handful of reviews had gone stale.

The website did not help the cause. It was a single-page site that listed every service in one scroll, so Google had nothing it could rank for "hot water repairs Ringwood" or "blocked drain Doncaster". Their business name, address and phone number were written three different ways across the directories where people check a tradie before calling. On a phone the click-to-call button was tiny and easy to miss, which for an emergency trade is the whole game.

The brothers told us what they wanted in plain terms. They wanted the phone to ring with local jobs, especially the after-hours emergencies that pay well and rarely shop around on price. They wanted to stop handing those calls to bigger franchises that simply showed up first on the map.

What Boltly did

The work, step by step

Local SEO sits on a few pillars: a strong Google Business Profile, consistent listings, pages that match how people search, and a steady flow of reviews. We worked through each one, putting the map pack fixes first because they move the fastest.

Profile overhaul

We claimed and verified the profile, set plumber as the primary category, drew an honest service area across the eastern suburbs and added real photos of the team, their vans and finished jobs.

NAP and citations

We made the business name, address and phone number identical everywhere, then built and cleaned listings across the Australian directories Melbourne homeowners actually check.

Service pages

We split the one-page site into proper pages for blocked drains, hot water, burst pipes and gas fitting, each written around the wording people search and the problem they are panicking over.

Suburb pages

We built genuine landing pages for the suburbs they cover, Box Hill, Ringwood, Doncaster and the rest, so Google could match a local search to a local page instead of guessing.

Reviews strategy

We set up a simple after-job routine, a text with a direct review link sent while the work was fresh, which turned a trickle of old reviews into a steady run of recent ones.

On-page work

We rewrote titles, headings and meta descriptions around real plumbing searches, added clear click-to-call buttons and made the emergency phone number impossible to miss on a phone.

Technical basics

We sped up the site on mobile, fixed crawl errors, added local business schema and made sure every new suburb and service page was indexed and linked properly.

Plain reporting

We reported each month on map rankings, calls and form enquiries in language the brothers could read between jobs, then steered the plan toward the work paying off best.

Results

What changed over seven months

These figures are representative of this engagement and show the kind of movement local SEO produces for a plumbing business that starts outside the map pack. The win that mattered most to the owners was simple: the phone ringing with local jobs at the hours that pay.
