SEO for Albury businesses whose customers live in two states

Albury is in New South Wales, but a good share of the people who search for you live in Wodonga, eight minutes away in Victoria. They keep different public holidays and use the two town names almost interchangeably when they search.

Boltly does this work remotely from Melbourne, month to month, with no setup fee.

  • NSW or Victoria?Say which side you trade from
  • Cover Wodonga?Only where you can show real jobs

The border

One set of customers, split by a river and a state line

Locals treat Albury and Wodonga as one place with two names, but search engines see two. Each side has its own postcode, council and state, and a listing that ignores the other side gives away half the market. Google's top suggestion after "Is Albury" asks whether it's in NSW or Victoria.

AlburyCity acknowledges the Wiradjuri people as the traditional custodians of the land. The ABS counts Albury and Wodonga as one urban area. Albury Wodonga Health describes itself as the only cross-border public health provider in Australia, serving a catchment of about 300,000 people, and your business probably draws from the same catchment.

Opening hours

Five days in 2026 when only one side of the river has a holiday

The Fair Work Ombudsman's 2026 list shows five dates where NSW and Victoria part ways. On each one, half your customers are off work and searching "open today". If your Business Profile still shows ordinary hours, Google may tell a Wodonga family you're closed when you're not, or send them to a locked door.

  1. Mon 9 MarLabour DayVictoria only
  2. Mon 27 AprExtra day for Anzac DayNSW only
  3. Fri 25 SepFriday before the AFL Grand FinalVictoria only
  4. Mon 5 OctLabour DayNSW only

Before each date

  • Add special hours in your Business Profile for that day, open or closedprofile
  • Say on your contact page whether you follow the NSW or Victorian calendarsite
  • Mention any public holiday surcharge before people arrivemenu or price page
  • Tell Wodonga customers if you'll still answer the phoneprofile post

Crossing over

Should an Albury business chase Wodonga searches?

Only if you'd happily take the job. Google's local results lean on relevance, distance and how well known a business is, so a plumber in Lavington won't outrank Wodonga plumbers for someone standing in Wodonga just by adding the word. What does work is a clear service area that includes 3690, a page that shows real Wodonga jobs, and reviews from people who live there.

A mobile mechanic based in Thurgoona would add Wodonga to the service area, write one page about servicing cars there with photos of those jobs, and ask Wodonga customers to name their suburb in reviews. A cafe on Dean Street is different: nobody drives across the border for a flat white because of a service area, so its effort goes into Albury searches.

For trades, a NSW licence doesn't automatically cover every job in Victoria, so check with each state's regulator first. Covering the Riverina as well? See SEO in Wagga Wagga, about 128 km up the Hume.

Yes or not yetanswer before you add 3690

  1. Do you already take Wodonga jobs?If yes, add Wodonga to the service area today.
  2. Can you show them?Photos, a suburb in a review, a finished job. No proof, no page yet.
  3. Is your licence good in Victoria?Check with each state's regulator before you advertise the work.
  4. Do customers come to you? Then the address matters more than the service area: get the pin and parking right.
  5. Is it inside your real travel range?Wodonga is eight minutes; Wangaratta or Beechworth need a longer think.
  6. Will you answer on Vic holidays?Say so in special hours, or the profile will guess.

Four yeses and it's worth a Wodonga page. Fewer, and the service area alone will do.

When customers ask why it's cheaper on the other side

"Why is Wodonga cheaper than Albury" is one of Google's own suggestions, so price comparison across the river is real. For a trade, that shows up as quote requests from people mostly checking a number, so make the comparison quick and fair.

Publish "from" prices

A starting price for your common jobs, with what's included, lets people rule themselves in or out before they ring.

Ask before you quote

Put budget, timing and suburb on your enquiry form. A Wodonga job that needs a Victorian licence or extra travel can be priced fairly from the start.

Charge for the big ones

For large jobs, a paid measure-up or detailed quote that's credited if they go ahead filters out pure price checks.

Central Albury

Central streets that people search by name

For food, drink and shopping, the border matters less than the street. Google suggests Dean Street by name for restaurants and pubs, and the "best Albury" suggestions are all about eating out: restaurants, cafes, breakfast, coffee, pubs. On Kiewa Street are West End Plaza at number 487 and the LibraryMuseum on the corner of Swift Street, home of the city's Uiver collection.

North of the centre, Lavington Square at 351 Griffith Road is in 2641, not 2640. A pharmacy there and a bar on Dean Street are answering different searches, so each needs its own street, centre name and postcode written in full. People also ask whether Albury has Uber, so visitors are working out how to get around after dark; a line about the nearest taxi rank or pick-up point answers it. Venues can take this further with SEO for restaurants.

Who you're selling to

A city that drives, and the plan that fits your trade

The 2021 Census counted 53,677 people in the Albury part of the urban area. 70.4% of Albury workers drove to work, against 43.1% across NSW and 52.7% nationally, so most customers reach you by car and judge you first on Google Maps: the pin, the parking line and the hours.

  • Shop, cafe or clinic with one Albury addressStarter, $500 a month: profile, holiday hours, a page per service, reviews.
  • Trade or mobile service covering Wodonga tooGrowth, $900 a month: adds cross-border service pages and the proof that goes on them.
  • Busy field across the region, such as health or buildingPerformance, $1,500 a month: more pages, more competitors tracked, monthly calls.

No lock-in, and the pricing page lists every inclusion. Each month you get one page of results: calls, direction requests and where you sit in the map results on each side of the river. If you'd rather do the work yourself with guidance, SEO consulting suits that.

Border questions

Questions from both sides of the Murray

How do I choose an SEO agency in Albury?

Pick the one that can show, in writing, what it will change on your profile and pages and how it will prove the result. Ask any agency how it handles Wodonga searches, which postcodes it will put in your service area, and whether you can leave without a contract. Boltly is in Melbourne, not Albury, and works with border businesses remotely.

Is Albury in NSW or VIC?

NSW. Albury is the New South Wales half of the Albury-Wodonga urban area, with postcodes 2640 and 2641. Wodonga, across the Murray, is in Victoria (3690). Customers mix freely, so your listing should say which side you are on.

Can one Google Business Profile cover Albury and Wodonga?

Yes, if you really serve both. A profile has one address, but a service-area business can list places on both sides of the border, and Google's guidelines keep the area within about two hours' drive of your base, which Wodonga, about 8 minutes from central Albury, fits easily. What you can't do is invent a second address in Wodonga.

How far is Albury from Wodonga?

About 6 km centre to centre, roughly an 8-minute drive on our road-routing estimate (OSRM, checked 4 October 2026).

Why do directory and quote sites show above my business for Albury searches?

Directories and quote marketplaces have pages for every town and a lot of links, so they usually win the plain blue links for a trade plus Albury. A local business can still win the map results and more specific searches, such as a job type plus Lavington or Wodonga, with a complete profile, reviews from both sides of the river and a page for each job you want more of. Marketplace leads may be shared with other businesses, so treat them as a top-up.

Do you have an office in Albury?

No. Boltly is based in Melbourne and works with Albury and Wodonga businesses by phone, video and a shared monthly report. Google judges your listing on your location, pages and reviews, not your agency's city. You can reach us on 0468 147 271 or at hello@boltly.com.au, and Albury shares Melbourne's clock.

How much does SEO cost for an Albury business?

Starter is $500 a month, Growth $900 and Performance $1,500, with no setup fee or lock-in. A shop serving only the NSW side usually fits Starter; a trade covering Wodonga and Thurgoona fits Growth. The pricing page lists what each includes.

We're moving from Wodonga to Albury. Will our Google profile survive the move?

Yes, if you move it rather than start again. Edit the address on your existing profile so the reviews come with you, and expect Google may ask you to verify again. Change the address first and leave the name, phone and categories alone until it settles, because a burst of edits can trigger a review. Update the postcode and state on your website, directories and invoices in the same week. If a profile is ever suspended, fix the cause, appeal once with proof such as signage photos and your ABN, and never open a second listing.

How long does SEO take in Albury?

Google's starter guide to SEO is frank that one change might register within hours while another needs months. Fixing your holiday hours or adding Wodonga to the service area can show quickly. Service pages and a run of reviews from both sides of the river build over months, so we record a first-month baseline and report against it.

What is Albury famous for?

The Murray River border with Wodonga, and the 1934 night, recorded by AlburyCity, when the town flashed its name in Morse code with the street lights to guide the lost Dutch airliner Uiver down.

The NSW-or-VIC, distance and famous-for questions come from Google's suggestions for Albury (4 October 2026).
