SEO for Brighton businesses, from Church Street to the beach

Brighton, in the City of Bayside about 11 kilometres south-south-east of the Melbourne CBD, has two shopping villages on the Sandringham line, Church Street and Bay Street, and a heritage-listed row of more than 80 bathing boxes on Dendy Street Beach. Boltly puts you in front of the locals and visitors who search before heading out, with monthly reporting and no fixed term.

Updated

The short answer

Two kinds of customer: professionals and beach visitors

Brighton buys from residents in professional jobs and from visitors to the bathing boxes. 26.0% of working residents are managers and 36.7% professionals, and legal (3.0%) and accounting services (2.7%) employ residents at two to three times the Victorian rate. Visitors pick where to eat, park and shop on the way, usually on Google.

For a Brighton business, SEO means a complete Google Business Profile, a page for each service or product line, steady reviews and a site that loads quickly on a phone at the beach.

The bathing boxes

A heritage landmark that sends visitors searching

The Brighton Bathing Boxes and Dendy Street Beach are on the Victorian Heritage Register as H2369. The entry describes more than 80 brightly painted boxes and notes their pull for visitors. Residents lease the boxes from Bayside City Council.

Google's suggestions show what those visitors want: parking, history, cafes and things to do nearby. A cafe, gift shop or tour business near Dendy Street can answer that with a page that names the boxes and gives the walk from the sand, plus summer hours on its profile.

Two shopping villages

Church Street and Bay Street are searched by name

Shoppers type the street name first, then what they want.

Middle Brighton

Church Street

Likened to "Toorak Village by the sea" in the Victorian Places history of Brighton, and served by Middle Brighton station on the Sandringham line, which reached Brighton Beach in 1861.

North Brighton

Bay Street

The bigger strip in 1887, with 65 shops to Church Street's 17, and served by North Brighton station, where the line from Windsor first arrived in 1859.

Trading on one strip while serving the whole suburb calls for one page about your village and one for each service. A Church Street page can name Middle Brighton station and the village feel; a Bay Street page can name North Brighton station and the longer run of shops.

"Nowhere to park" costs a visit before it costs a review

Parking shows up in the suggestions for both the bathing boxes and Church Street, so people ask before they leave home. Without an answer they go elsewhere, or come anyway and complain in a review. Half an hour fixes it:

  • Add a short "getting here" note to your contact page: nearest station (Middle Brighton for Church Street, North Brighton for Bay Street), any off-street spaces or loading zone, and the walk from the nearest car park you know of.
  • Put a street photo of your entrance and the same directions on your Business Profile, so the map listing answers it too.
  • When a review mentions parking, reply with the practical fix (the station, the side street, the quieter time of day) instead of an apology alone.

Check the signs first: Bayside City Council sets the limits and fees, and changes them.

A long bayside history

Brighton's story, one pier post at a time

The railway reached North Brighton in 1859, and names from that era (Bay Street, Green Point, the yacht club) still turn up in local searches and on shopfronts.

Who lives here

An established suburb where many homes are owned outright

At the 2021 Census, 45.1 per cent of Brighton homes were owned outright, against 23.7 per cent rented.

On Census day 44.9% of working residents worked from home, against 25.7% across Victoria (a lockdown-day snapshot), and only 33.5% drove to work. Russian (1.3%, against 0.3% statewide) and Greek (1.8%) are spoken at home alongside Mandarin (4.0%). For builders, lawyers, clinics and advisers, that means detailed service pages, weekday availability and reviews that name the work done.

Around Brighton

Neighbours on three sides, and the bay on the fourth

Brighton borders Elwood and Elsternwick to the north, Brighton East to the east and Hampton to the south, with Port Phillip Bay along its western edge.

A practice on Church Street often draws clients from all four directions, but Google weighs distance, so give the suburbs you really serve a page of their own rather than a list in your footer. For the wider city, see SEO Melbourne and local SEO in Melbourne.

Same name, other states

Four Brightons in Australia, and Google has to pick one

The ABS publishes Census data for this suburb as "Brighton (Vic.)" because the name is shared. Google usually shows a shopper on Church Street the right one because it knows where they are. The trouble is everyone else: a client moving from interstate, a visitor planning a day at the boxes, or a directory that fills in the state for you.

Write the state and postcode

Put "Brighton VIC 3186" in your title tag, footer, contact page and schema address (addressRegion VIC, postalCode 3186).

Check your directory listings

Search your business name with "Brighton" and look for listings that show SA or Qld. Correct each one; a wrong state on a citation points Google at the wrong map. Check the postcode too, since anything other than 3186 means the listing needs fixing.

Name what only this Brighton has

Mention Dendy Street Beach, Church Street or Bay Street. No other Brighton has them. A line such as "two minutes from the Dendy Street bathing boxes" places you faster than a postcode.

Questions Brighton owners ask

SEO questions from Brighton business owners

What does SEO cost for a Brighton business?

Boltly plans start from $500 a month for one location, $900 for a business serving Brighton and nearby bayside suburbs, and $1,500 for competitive trades or online stores. All three are month to month, with no setup fee.

How long until SEO shows results for a Brighton business?

Google's SEO starter guide says some changes take effect within hours and others take several months. A completed profile is usually the first thing to move; contested searches such as lawyers or builders in Brighton take longest.

Should I target Church Street, Bay Street, or Brighton as a whole?

Usually both. Name your street clearly, because shoppers search by it, then add service pages for the wider area you serve. We check where your customers come from before deciding the split.

Do I need an SEO agency based in Brighton?

No. Whether you searched "local SEO Brighton" or came by referral, the work happens online, so what counts is knowing the villages, the beach traffic and the suburbs around you. Boltly is a Melbourne-based business with a 10-person team, working remotely.

Can I ask my clients for Google reviews?

Yes. Google's review policy sets three limits: no discounts, gifts or payment in exchange for a review, no asking only the clients you expect to be happy, and no pressing people to write one while they are still in your rooms. What works is one message with your review link, sent to every client once the job or matter is finished. If you run a legal, accounting or medical practice, reply to reviews without confirming any detail of the person's matter; a short thank you, or an offer to talk by phone, is enough.

Can you guarantee a number one ranking?

No. Google's own guide to hiring an SEO says no one can guarantee first place, and anyone who promises it is taking a risk with your business. We commit to the work, clear reporting and a straight view of what is realistic.

What is included, and do you work with Shopify, WordPress or other platforms?

Every plan covers your Google Business Profile, page improvements, reviews, site health and monthly reporting. We work on WordPress, Shopify and most other common platforms, and our Shopify SEO service covers online stores in more depth.
