Straight to it

Degrees, renters and a long main road

Hawthorn's median age is 34, more than half of residents hold a bachelor degree or higher, and 45.6% of homes are rented. With so many renters, plenty of residents are still choosing a regular cafe, physio or accountant.

For a Hawthorn business, SEO comes down to four things: a Google Business Profile that names the right category and street, a page for every service, directions that mention Glenferrie Road, Burwood Road or the nearest station, and new reviews from real customers every month.

Glenferrie Road and Burwood Road

Two roads people search by name

Glenferrie Road is Hawthorn's main shopping strip, and Yarra Trams lists ten route 16 stops along it inside the suburb, from Johnson Street (76) south to Gardiner Road (67), with Glenferrie Station at stop 74. Burwood Road has its own run of shops, with route 75 stopping at Hawthorn Station (26) and at Power Street.

Name your road in your address, page titles and directions. On Burwood Road, Google even suggests "hawthorn east": the road crosses into the next suburb, and customers want to know which side you're on.

Two stations, three lines

Hawthorn and Glenferrie, on the same tracks

Metro Trains lists Hawthorn station on Burwood Road at Evansdale Road and Glenferrie station on Glenferrie Road, both in Zone 1 and both on the Alamein, Belgrave and Lilydale lines.

Commuters search Hawthorn and Glenferrie stations for parking and timetables. If you're within walking distance, name the station in your directions and keep early and late hours accurate.

Write Hawthorn VIC or 3122 in your listings and page titles, and don't rely on "Hawthorn Melbourne" alone. On the ABS suburb map Hawthorn borders six suburbs: Kew to the north, Hawthorn East to the east, Kooyong and Toorak to the south and south-west, and Richmond and Burnley to the west. Neighbours matter because Google weighs distance; see our pages on SEO in Richmond, SEO in Camberwell and SEO in South Yarra.

Rankings went up, but the phone didn't ring more

A firm on Glenferrie Road can climb for a dozen phrases and still see no extra matters or bookings, because rankings only count when they reach the services people pay for. Measure enquiries instead: key events in Google Analytics for form sends and booking clicks, calls and direction requests in your Business Profile performance view, and asking every new client how they found you. If you add a call-tracking number, Google allows up to two extra numbers beside the primary, so keep your main number listed and make sure the tracking number is registered to you, not an agency.

Hawthorn questions

Questions from Glenferrie Road

How much does SEO cost for a Hawthorn business?

Boltly's Starter plan is from $500 a month for one location, Growth from $900 once you add nearby suburbs such as Hawthorn East or Kew, and Performance from $1,500 for competitive fields. No setup fee, cancel any month. Restaurants, health and legal services are among the busier categories in Hawthorn.

How long does it take to rank on Google Maps?

Google's SEO starter guide allows anything from a few hours to several months before a change shows. A verified, properly set-up profile usually moves first; competitive categories on Glenferrie Road take longer.

We pay for SEO every month. How do we check what was actually done?

Ask for a change log, not a screenshot of rankings. Each month it should list the pages edited or published with their addresses, the profile changes, technical fixes and any links earned. You can check much of it yourself: new pages in your sitemap, last-changed dates, and clicks in Search Console. Google's advice on hiring an SEO suggests asking whether they'll share every change they make. If the report looks the same every month, ask why.

Can two businesses share an address on Google Business Profile?

Yes, if they're separate businesses that each meet Google's guidelines. You can't create extra profiles for one business to cover different services, although some professionals, such as doctors or lawyers, can have a practitioner profile alongside the practice's.

Should I show my home address on Google Business Profile?

Not if customers don't visit you. You can hide the address and set a service area instead. Google doesn't accept a PO box, or an unstaffed virtual office, as a business address.

Our website domain was registered by our old web designer. Does that matter?

Yes, because whoever holds the licence controls the domain. Look up your .au name on auDA's WHOIS service and check the licence holder is your business. If it isn't, ask in writing for a transfer to you now and keep the registrar login yourself. The same goes for hosting and website admin.

Should I hire an SEO agency or do it myself?

You can handle the basics yourself: claim your profile, keep your hours right and ask for reviews. An agency earns its fee when you're in a competitive category, need new pages or technical fixes, or don't have the time each month.
