SEO for Rockhampton businesses starts with which side of the river you're on
The Fitzroy cuts Rockhampton in two, and the 2021 Census shows more than twice as many people living in the north side's postcode, 4701, as in the city side's 4700. Google weighs distance when it picks the businesses in its map results. A shop in Allenstown and a shop in Norman Gardens can sell the same thing and still reach different halves of the city.

How locals type it, with … for "Rockhampton": north … medical centre cafes north side … woolworths north side …
Your job here: say "North Rockhampton" where it reads naturally, and don't forget the city side across the bridge.
Beyond both banks, the 4702 postal area (Gracemere and far beyond) held another 29,819 people. Postal areas are the ABS's version of postcodes, so the edges are close but not exact. Source: ABS 2021 Census QuickStats, POA4700, POA4701, POA4702.
Most of Rocky lives north of the Fitzroy
Google says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and popularity. Distance is the one you can't change by working harder, and in Rockhampton it has a river in the middle of it. Someone in Frenchville searching for a dentist sits a bridge away from the CBD, and the map in the local pack often shows that.
So be the obvious choice on your own bank, and give the other bank a reason to cross: a specialty, a better booking system, a car park near the Fitzroy, a page that tells them exactly how to get to you.

When the river comes up
If a flood closes your premises or cuts your usual route across, tell Google, as its help pages describe: set special hours for a closure of under a week, and mark the profile "Temporarily closed" for a week or longer, then switch it back the day you reopen. Google notes that temporarily closed businesses can rank after open ones for broad searches, so don't leave the status on a day longer than you need it.
Then post a profile update and a line on your home page: which bank you're working from, if you're taking calls, and how customers across the Fitzroy can reach you while a crossing is shut.

Two towns, joined by bridges, then by one council
North Rockhampton was once its own municipality. That history explains why locals still say "north side" and why Google's suggestions put "north side" in front of cafes and the Woolworths.
- 1858
Rockhampton is proclaimed a port and a town.
- 1881
An iron suspension bridge joins the north bank to the town, replacing punts and ferries.
- 1883
North Rockhampton is proclaimed a municipality of its own.
- 1899
A railway crossing reaches North Rockhampton over the Fitzroy.
- 1919
The north side municipality is amalgamated with Rockhampton.
- 1980
North Rockhampton has become the growth area, and a second bridge opens.
For a business this means "Rockhampton" alone may not be the phrase your customers type. If you trade north of the river, use "North Rockhampton" in your page copy and your Google Business Profile description where it fits, while keeping the suburb Australia Post gives you in the address. A CBD business has the opposite job: making the north side feel the trip is short.

Two plumbers, one on each bank
Two made-up plumbers with the same skills and prices need different plans because one works from a yard in Park Avenue and the other from Allenstown. Here's how we'd set up each.
| The job | Park Avenue plumber, 4701 | Allenstown plumber, 4700 |
|---|---|---|
| Profile | Address in Park Avenue, or hidden if customers never visit the yard. Service area set to the north side first, then the city side. | Address in Allenstown. Service area starting with the CBD, Wandal and The Range, then the north side. |
| Words on the site | "North Rockhampton plumber" appears in the main service page, because that's the phrase locals use. | "Rockhampton plumber" on the main page, with a separate page for north-side work only if they do a lot of it. |
| Reviews | Ask customers to mention the suburb, so Frenchville or Kawana appears in their words. | Same request. A review from Norman Gardens is evidence the business crosses the river. |
| Biggest risk | Ignoring the city side because the home bank is busy enough. | Being invisible to the larger north side, which has more than twice the people. |
Google's suggestions for plumbers here lean on reviews, prices and emergencies. On either bank, a page that states call-out pricing and a stream of recent reviews will help more than any trick with addresses. Never list an address you don't trade from: it breaks Google's profile guidelines and can get a listing suspended. Trades owners can read more on SEO for plumbers.
The fake listing named after a keyword
Both example plumbers will meet one sooner or later: a map listing called something like "Emergency Plumber Rockhampton" instead of a business name, sometimes with an address nobody works from, sitting above real tradies. Google's guidelines don't allow either, and its help pages give you the tool: open the listing in Google Maps and suggest an edit, choosing the reason that fits (the name, or a place that doesn't exist at that address). Keep a dated screenshot each time. Fixes can be slow, and copying the trick is how real businesses lose their own listings, so put the effort into what a fake can't show: your licence number, photos of real jobs on both banks and reviews that name the suburb.

4702, Gracemere and the drive to the coast
Australia Post lists 92 places under 4702, from Gracemere to Keppel Sands and far out across the region, and that postal area held 29,819 people at the 2021 Census. Plenty of them shop and book in Rockhampton.
Gracemere
Close enough that a Rockhampton business can reasonably list it in a service area. If you do regular work there, a page about that work is fair; a page that only swaps the name is not.
Yeppoon and the coast
Google suggests "rockhampton to yeppoon" for a reason. Coast customers search their own town first, so a Rockhampton business needs to say plainly if it travels there and how often.
The mines and stations
Coal mining employed 3.7% of Rockhampton's workers in 2021, against 0.4% nationally. Suppliers to those sites sell by phone, email and quote, so their website has to do the talking.
- 79,293

- 70.1%

Under Google Business Profile's guidelines, a service area is meant to stay inside "about two hours of driving time" from your base. That covers the coast and a good stretch of the region from Rockhampton, so the limit rarely bites. What trips businesses up is listing every town without a page, a job or a review to back it.

Three jobs, in this order
For most Rockhampton businesses the work comes down to three jobs, done remotely from Melbourne, with the full detail on our process page.
Own your bank
Check where you appear for your main searches on both sides of the river, then fix the profile: categories, hours, photos, the suburb and the right postcode.
Give the other bank a reason
Service pages that say what you do, what it costs and how to reach you from the north side or the CBD, with the bridge and parking spelt out.
Earn and report
A steady flow of reviews that name suburbs, and a short report on calls, direction requests and map position you can check in your own accounts.
What it costs, bank by bank
Three plans, paid monthly, no setup fee and no lock-in. See the pricing page for the full inclusions.
| Starter | One address, customers mostly on your own side of the river. | $500/mo |
| Growth | Reaching both banks properly, plus Gracemere or the coast. | $900/mo |
| Performance | Several sites, or crowded categories like health and trades across Central Queensland. | $1,500/mo |
Prices as at 4 October 2026.
Questions from both sides of the river
Is there a good SEO company in Rockhampton?
Judge any SEO company, local or not, on whether it can show you what north-side and city-side searchers see when they look for your service, and what it would change first. Boltly is based in Melbourne and works remotely, so we won't claim to be local. We will show you the searches, the plan and the price before you sign anything.
I work from home in Rockhampton. Will my address show on Google?
Only if you leave it on. A business that goes to its customers, like most tradies, is a service-area business: you verify with your real address and then hide it, and Google's guidelines say a plumber working from a home address should clear the address from the profile. Customers then see the areas you serve, such as one bank plus Gracemere. Don't swap in a PO box or a rented mailbox to look bigger; Google doesn't accept them as a business address.
What is the postcode for North Rockhampton?
4701. North Rockhampton covers several suburbs, such as Park Avenue, Berserker and Norman Gardens, and they all use it.
Is Rockhampton a city?
Yes. It is the main centre of the Rockhampton Region council area, and the 2021 Census counted 79,293 people in the Rockhampton urban area.
Is Rockhampton bigger than Mackay?
A little smaller on the 2021 Census: 79,293 people in the Rockhampton urban area against 84,333 in Mackay's.
How far is Rockhampton from Brisbane?
About 640 km north, according to Queensland Places. Rockhampton Airport lists Qantas and Virgin Australia, with flights to Brisbane, Mackay, Townsville and Cairns.
How much does SEO cost for a Rockhampton business?
Starter is $500 a month, Growth $900 and Performance $1,500. There's no setup fee and no lock-in. Most single-site businesses that want both banks of the river need Growth.
Does Boltly have an office in Rockhampton?
No. Boltly is a Melbourne business and works with Rockhampton clients remotely. You'll see every change on your profile and site, and you can ring 0468 147 271.
