The short answer

A walking suburb where the first result gets the booking

Surry Hills is a suburb people cross on foot: at the 2021 Census more working residents walked to work (11.0%) than drove (8.8%), and homes averaged 0.7 cars. Diners pick by cuisine, office workers look for lunch, tech buyers look for suppliers, and whoever appears first with good reviews gets the booking.

That means a complete Google Business Profile, a page for each thing you offer, genuine reviews and a site that loads fast. For studios and tech firms, it also means pages that rank beyond the suburb.

Four streets make the edges

Where Surry Hills starts and stops

On the NSW suburb map, Surry Hills runs from Cleveland Street up to Wentworth Avenue and Oxford Street, between Elizabeth and Chalmers Streets and the South Dowling Street corridor. The Darlinghurst border leaves Oxford Street and cuts through side streets, and Central station is just over the western edge, in Haymarket.

A cafe on Cleveland Street may be searched as Surry Hills, Redfern or both, and a studio near Oxford Street competes with Darlinghurst. Pages that name the street, the nearest stop and the right suburb help Google place you correctly.

Crown Street and beyond

Diners search by cuisine, meal and suburb at once

Dining searches cluster on Crown Street, down the old sandstone ridge, and the streets either side. Google's suggestions show how people narrow "Surry Hills restaurants" by cuisine (Italian, Indian, Japanese), by price and by meal.

Each is a separate search with its own winners. A venue that lists its cuisine, meal times and price range on its profile and menu page can appear for several; one that only says "restaurant" shows up for far fewer. Our guide to SEO for restaurants goes deeper.

Tech Central

Tech firms nearby, and residents who work in them

Surry Hills is part of the NSW Government's Tech Central precinct around Central station, and residents work in the field too: 5.0% in computer system design at the 2021 Census, more than double the NSW rate.

For software, design and professional firms here, the buyer is usually in another city, so you need service pages that rank nationally, proof of work and a technically sound site, which our technical SEO service covers.

Who lives here

Renters, professionals and a lot of people living alone

Almost half of Surry Hills households are one person and two in three homes are rented, so many residents are still finding their regular cafe, gym or dentist, usually on a phone. The median household earned $2,308 a week at the 2021 Census.

Chalked up

An unreadable menu, a GEO pitch and quotes ten times apart

These three come up with Crown Street restaurants and Tech Central studios alike.

Restaurants

Diners want the menu, prices and dietary notes before they book

Someone choosing between three Italian places on Crown Street checks the menu first, often on a phone, and a blurry photo or slow PDF loses them. Put the current menu on a normal web page with prices, and mark vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free dishes.

Link it from your Google profile's menu field, update it the day prices change, and list the meal times you serve, since lunch and dinner are separate searches.

Startups

Someone is selling you GEO as a separate service

New pitches promise visibility in AI answers for an extra fee. Google's own guide to its generative AI features says those features rest on its core ranking systems, and that you can ignore tactics such as chunking content or creating AI text files like llms.txt.

Ask the seller what they would do that ordinary SEO doesn't, and how they'd measure it. For a startup, clear product pages, real customer proof and a fast, crawlable site do the work both ways.

Studios and firms

Three quotes, and one is ten times another

Compare quotes on the hours each month, the named deliverables and who does the work, and ask for a sample report.

Our three plans are published below, so you can hold them against anyone's quote line by line.

Our routine

How a Surry Hills campaign comes together

The same five steps apply to a Crown Street bar and a software company.

1

Look at the street

We search from Crown Street, Central and the Devonshire Street light rail stop, and note where Darlinghurst or Redfern results crowd you out.

2

Fix the profile

Cuisine or service categories, late hours for the bar strip, menus, and the street you are on.

3

Write the pages

By cuisine for venues, by capability for studios and tech firms, with the right suburb where you sit near a border.

4

Earn reviews

One ask per customer, and a reply to every review.

5

Show the numbers

Bookings, calls and enquiries each month, with market Saturdays and theatre nights noted.

Pricing

One Crown Street venue, a few nearby suburbs, or national service pages

Every plan is published and runs month to month; the fit depends on your site and competitors.

Questions Surry Hills owners ask

What diners, studios and tech firms here ask us

How much does SEO cost for a Surry Hills business?

Starter is $500 a month for one Surry Hills venue or studio, Growth $900 when you also serve the suburbs around it, and Performance $1,500 for national terms, hospitality groups or online stores. No setup fee; stop any month. A small studio off Crown Street usually needs far less than a restaurant group.

How long does SEO take to show results in Surry Hills?

Google's SEO starter guide says some changes register within hours and others take months. A corrected profile can show quickly; ranking for crowded searches, like restaurants on Crown Street or agencies near Central, takes much longer.

Do I need a Google Business Profile to show in Google Maps for Surry Hills searches?

Yes. The map results come from Business Profiles, so without one you cannot appear there. Fill it in fully and keep hours accurate. Google's help says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and popularity, and it explains reviews under prominence.

Is SEO worth it for a small business in Surry Hills?

A cafe or studio that relies on passing trade or new renters gains a lot from naming its street, cuisine or specialty and building reviews. If your trade comes almost entirely from regulars, a lighter plan may be enough, and we will tell you if so.

Why are my Surry Hills competitors ranking above me?

Usually because their profile is more complete, they have more recent reviews, or their pages match the search more closely. Or they sit closer to the searcher. A free audit compares your listing and site with theirs, so you can see where the gap is.

Does SEO still work now that Google shows AI answers?

Yes. Google's AI features draw on the same web pages and business information that ordinary results use, and Google says no special markup is needed to appear in them.

Is there a lock-in contract, and how do I choose an agency?

No lock-in; Boltly plans run month to month. When comparing agencies, ask who does the work and what changes in the first month. Be wary of ranking guarantees; Google itself says no one can guarantee first place.
