The Canberra edition · ACT and Queanbeyan
Local SEO for Canberra, one town centre at a time
Canberra doesn't search as one city. People search for a plumber in Gungahlin or an electrician in Tuggeranong, naming their own side of town. Local SEO makes sure Google shows your business in the parts of Canberra you actually serve, and in Queanbeyan too if you cross the border. Boltly handles it with clear monthly numbers and no contract.

What local SEO means in a city built around town centres
Local SEO is how your business earns a spot in the map for the Canberra town centre, or centres, where your customers are. Each centre is a hub for shopping, health care and services, and many everyday searches are made with one in mind.
In practice that means a Google Business Profile that is accurate and complete, service areas that match where you really work, a page for each main service and centre, and a steady flow of honest reviews. Google says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and popularity (which it explains under the heading prominence).

Each town centre has its own search habits
Google's suggestions show people searching by centre: the medical centre at Belconnen Mall, the Tuggeranong shopping centre, a GP practice in Gungahlin, trades named by district. A business that serves one centre should say so clearly; a business that serves several needs a page and a service area for each. See how this works for Phillip in the Woden centre and Kingston.
Gungahlin
- medical practice
- library
Belconnen
- mall medical centre
- markets
Woden
- westfield
- library
Tuggeranong
- medical centre
- shopping centre
Each line is what Google suggests after the centre's name, rechecked 4 October 2026. Typing a centre name alone brings up its shopping centre, library, cinema and clinics, so the centre is how people picture where things are.
Light rail made the Northbourne corridor a place people walk
Canberra's light rail runs from Gungahlin Place to Alinga Street in the city, every 5 minutes in the weekday morning peak and every 15 minutes on weekends, along the Northbourne Avenue corridor. Transport Canberra lists plans to extend the network beyond the city.
If your business is near a stop, name it in your directions and on your contact page, and make sure your map pin sits on your real entrance. People walking from a stop want the closest option that is open now.

Queanbeyan is in New South Wales, but your customers don't care
Queanbeyan is a New South Wales city and the seat of Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council, yet it is part of the Canberra and Queanbeyan built-up area. For a trade or mobile business, it is simply the next suburb over.
Sources: ABS Regional Population 2024 to 25 (Canberra - Queanbeyan Significant Urban Area; Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional LGA, 67,633 people); Google Business Profile Help, service areas. Checked 4 October 2026.
If you work there, add Queanbeyan to your service areas and give it its own page, written for people there. Google's guidelines cap a service area at roughly two hours' drive from where you are based, so Queanbeyan sits comfortably inside a Canberra business's range. Check your licences cover both sides of the border where your trade needs it.
Reach across town, a double listing and a caller who says they're Google
Canberra's spread-out town centres make the first of these sharper here than in most cities. The other two turn up wherever a business has a profile worth taking.
We work all over Canberra, but only show up near our base
A Belconnen electrician lists every district in the service area and still disappears from the map by Woden. That's expected. Google's ranking help lists distance to the searcher as one of the main factors, and the service-area setting describes where you travel; it can hold up to 20 areas, within about two hours' drive, but it doesn't move your pin.
Reach the other centres through things that are true: a page for each centre you really work in, with jobs, photos and travel times; reviews from customers there that mention the job; and, if a centre matters now, a small ads budget for it while the organic work builds.
Two listings for one business after a move between centres
Moving from Belconnen to Gungahlin, buying a practice or changing providers can leave an old profile behind, sometimes owned by a former owner or an old agency. Reviews split between the two, and customers ring the wrong number.
Get control of both first. Search for the old listing and choose Request access; Google says the current owner is emailed and has three days to respond. Service-area businesses contact support and ask to transfer ownership of the listing. Then contact Google Business Profile support with the map links of both and say which one stays, and don't create a third profile while you wait.
A caller says they're from Google and the listing is at risk
Unsolicited calls and emails warn that a profile will be removed, or promise first place on the map for a fee. Google's own guide to hiring an SEO says no one can guarantee a #1 ranking, and to beware of anyone claiming a "special relationship" with Google.
Don't hand over a login or a verification code on a cold call. Check the profile yourself at business.google.com. If you do hire help, add them as a manager, keep yourself as the primary owner, and ask what they'll change before they touch anything.

Ask every customer, reward no one
Google says the number of reviews and positive ratings can help local ranking, but the rules are strict. Google's policy bans offering payment, discounts or free goods for reviews, and bans asking only your happy customers. The ACCC says creating fake reviews, or hiding genuine negative ones, is against the law.
- Ask every customer the same way, whatever their experience
- Never offer a discount, gift or entry in a draw for a review
- Reply to negative reviews calmly, and never try to bury them
- Make it easy: a short link or a card handed over at the counter

If you have a minute, we'd value an honest review on Google. Good or bad, it helps us improve and helps other Canberrans decide.
No rewards, no strings
Hand the same card to every customer, not just the happy ones.
Floriade brings a month of visitors searching nearby
Floriade 2026 runs from 12 September to 11 October 2026 in Commonwealth Park, with NightFest from 1 to 4 October. Google suggests searches for the Floriade dates, NightFest and parking, and visitors then look for breakfast, parking and places to eat close by.
Accurate hours, fresh photos and a short Google post pay off fastest around events like this. If you open late for NightFest or change your menu for the season, update your profile the week before, not the week after. Our Google Business Profile guide shows how.

Timing, guarantees and ranking in Queanbeyan
How long does local SEO take to work in Canberra?
There's no fixed date. Google's SEO starter guide says changes can show within hours or take months, and map positions shift with competitors and with where the searcher stands. Crowded trades and health categories take longer. Your monthly report shows map positions for each centre, so you can see where it is working.
How much does local SEO cost in Canberra?
Boltly's plans start at $500 a month for one location, $900 for businesses covering several centres or Queanbeyan, and $1,500 for crowded categories or city-wide coverage. There is no lock-in.
Can you guarantee my business will reach the top of Google Maps?
No one can. Google states plainly that local rankings can't be requested or bought, and results change with where the searcher is standing. We commit to the work and report the results each month.
How will I know if local SEO is working?
Each month you see calls, website clicks and direction requests from your profile, enquiries from your site, and your map position for agreed searches checked from each town centre you serve. If a centre lags, the report says why and what changes next.
Should I use local SEO or Google Ads in Canberra?
Ads buy a spot today and stop when the budget does; local SEO takes longer but keeps bringing calls. One sensible pattern is a small ads budget in the centres where you are weakest while local SEO builds, scaled back as the map positions come.
Why does my business only show on Google Maps near my own office?
Because distance to the searcher is one of the main things Google uses for local results, and the service-area setting doesn't change where your pin is. To be found in other town centres, publish a real page for each centre you work in, collect reviews from jobs there and keep your profile complete.
Can my Canberra business also rank in Queanbeyan?
Yes, if you really work there. Add Queanbeyan to your service areas, create a page written for Queanbeyan customers and collect reviews from jobs there. Being based in the ACT is no barrier, since Google's local results ignore state lines.
Is local SEO right for a business without a shopfront?
Yes. Mobile trades, cleaners and home services can set up a service-area profile, hide their home address as Google asks and list the centres and suburbs they cover. Canberra's search suggestions are full of trades named by district.
How do I choose a local SEO agency for a Canberra business?
Ask who will do the work, how they report, whether they follow Google's review rules and whether you can leave without penalty. Boltly is a Melbourne-based business working with Canberra businesses remotely. Our Canberra SEO consulting page covers advice-only options.
We picked these from Google's search suggestions and from the FAQs on pages that currently rank for Canberra SEO searches, as seen on 14 September and 4 October 2026.
