Nearly every Adelaide business is a small one
The ABS counts a business as small when it has fewer than 20 employees. By that measure 126,736 of Greater Adelaide's 130,241 businesses are small, and the Small Business Ombudsman's line holds nationally too: "Almost 98% of all businesses in Australia are small".
Small business SEO in Adelaide is the short list of work that brings in local customers, done properly and priced for a business of one to nineteen people: a complete Google Business Profile, a clear page for each service, a steady flow of reviews and a website Google can read. It isn't an enterprise campaign with a smaller invoice.

Greater Adelaide, 30 June 2025. Top seven industries by count.
Builders, landlords and consultants lead the count
Construction is the biggest group in Greater Adelaide, with 22,613 businesses, roughly one in six. Rental, hiring and real estate follows with 16,727, then professional, scientific and technical services with 15,258, transport, postal and warehousing with 12,761, and health care and social assistance with 12,023.
Each group is found in a different way. A plumber or electrician lives on the map and on calls from a phone, so the profile and service area carry most of the load. A bookkeeper or engineer is judged on the website, where clear service pages and proof of experience count. A clinic needs reviews and exact hours, and a shop or cafe (retail has 6,902 businesses, accommodation and food 5,434) needs photos, menus and opening times customers can trust.

Every year brings new businesses into the map
Greater Adelaide gained 3,999 businesses in the year to 30 June 2025, rising from 126,242 to 130,241. Nationally the count kept climbing: 2,814,778 businesses were actively trading at 30 June 2026, 85,130 more than a year earlier.
Plenty also start and stop. In 2025-26 the ABS entry rate was 16.9% and the exit rate 13.8%, so the businesses beside yours in the local results keep changing, and a new competitor can arrive with a fresh profile at any time. Keeping your profile current and your website useful is how an established business holds its place. The ABS will publish regional figures to June 2026 on 18 December 2026.

The Ombudsman's checklist for hiring help
The Australian Small Business and Family Enterprise Ombudsman has written down what small business clients should get from a digital marketing provider: clarity on services, cost and "timeframes for results", a portfolio and client contacts, and reporting done "clearly, transparently, and regularly".
It goes further than most contracts. Providers are told to include a dispute clause with external mediation, to "Ensure a simple exit process", and to hold a handover meeting that returns "the client's access and assets". Use it as your checklist when comparing Adelaide agencies. Boltly publishes its prices, works month to month and reports every month without jargon. If you trade in the city itself, the City of Adelaide's business pages also cover starting a business, funding and incentives, and building your skills.

Google's rules have no shortcuts
Two of Google's own help pages settle the question most owners are really asking. A place in the map can't be bought, there's no hidden trick that puts a website first, and changes can show up within hours or take months.
So treat any promise of guaranteed first place, or results within a week, as a warning sign. What does move rankings is steady work: a profile that matches what people search for, pages Google can read, and prominence, which Google bases on "how many websites link to your business and how many reviews you have". Our guide to how long SEO takes sets out realistic timelines.

- ✓Your real-world business name only
- ✓Categories are not keywords
- ✓Virtual offices are not eligible
- ✓Co-working only if signed, staffed and receiving customers
A profile for businesses without a shopfront
With 88,905 Greater Adelaide businesses employing nobody, a lot of owners work from home, a van or their clients' premises. Google caters for them: a service-area business gets one profile with a service area, "should hide your business address", and keeps that area within "about two hours of driving time" of its base.
The name should reflect the business's "real-world name", without suburbs or keywords tacked on, and Google warns: "Do not use categories solely as keywords." Virtual offices aren't eligible, and a co-working desk only counts if it's signed, staffed and receiving customers. Get these right before you chase rankings. Our Google Business Profile guide walks through setup, or see our Google Business Profile service if you'd rather hand it over.

A one-star review appears, and you're sure it's fake
For a business of one or two people, a single unfair review can feel like a sign on the shopfront, and getting it taken down is harder than most owners expect. Google's help page is clear about why: you can report any review, but only reviews that break Google's policies are eligible for removal, and Google doesn't get involved in disagreements between a business and a customer. So the useful question is what you can control.
What to do
- Check it against Google's policies. Spam, a reviewer who was never a customer, or a conflict of interest such as a competitor are the cases worth reporting.
- Report it from your Business Profile: Read reviews, Report, choose the reason. Google says evaluation typically takes several days.
- If someone is demanding money to stop posting negative reviews, use Google's separate process for reporting extortion, and keep screenshots.
- Reply once, calmly and briefly, for the next customer who reads it. State the facts without arguing.
- Keep asking every genuine customer for a review. Fresh, real reviews do more than a removal ever will.
What not to do
- Don't offer a discount or refund in exchange for deleting a genuine negative review.
- Don't offer incentives only for positive reviews. The ACCC says incentives must apply whether the review is positive or negative, and be clearly disclosed.
- Don't post reviews yourself, or ask family or staff to, without stating the connection. Creating or arranging fake reviews is against the law.
- Don't report a review just because you dislike it. Google says not to, and it won't be removed.

What Adelaide small business owners ask
How much does SEO cost for a small business in Adelaide?
Boltly's small business plans in Adelaide start at $500 a month for one location, $900 for more services or suburbs, and $1,500 for competitive trades, paid monthly with no lock-in. When you compare quotes, line up what each includes and who does the work.
Is SEO worth it for a small business?
It can be, if customers search for what you sell and you can wait while it builds; Google's starter guide says some changes show in hours and others take several months. It's less useful if hardly anyone searches for your service, or if you need sales this week, when ads or referrals are the quicker start. Our guide on whether SEO is worth it goes further.
Do SEO companies really work?
Good ones do, but none can promise first place, because Google is clear that nobody can request or buy a better spot in its local results. Judge a company on what it will do each month, how it reports and how easily you can leave. The Small Business Ombudsman's advice to digital marketing providers makes a handy checklist.
Is SEO better than Google Ads?
Neither wins for every business. Ads can bring clicks from day one but stop when the money does; SEO is slower to start but keeps bringing unpaid visits. Some small businesses run a modest ad budget while their SEO builds. Our comparison of SEO versus Google Ads covers when each makes sense.
Does Google offer SEO services?
No. Google offers free tools, such as Google Business Profile and Search Console, and a free SEO Starter Guide, but it doesn't sell rankings or do SEO for you. Showing up in the unpaid results is free; the cost is the time, or the help, needed to earn it. Be wary of anyone who says they can buy you a spot there.
What questions should I ask when hiring an SEO company?
Ask what's done each month, what it costs, how long results usually take, who does the work, how you'll get reports, how you can leave, and what happens to your accounts and content if you do. Those line up with the Ombudsman's advice, which includes "a simple exit process" and returning "the client's access and assets".
Can I have a Google Business Profile without a physical address?
Yes, if you serve customers at their place. Set up a service-area profile, hide your business address as Google asks, and list the areas you cover, keeping them within about two hours of driving time. Home-based trades, cleaners and mobile services all use this setup.
How do I remove a Google review that is false?
Report it from your Business Profile by opening your reviews, choosing Report next to the review and picking the reason. Google only removes reviews that break its policies, such as spam, fake engagement or conflicts of interest, and it says evaluation typically takes several days. If the review is simply unfair rather than against policy, it will usually stay, so reply politely with the facts and focus on getting more genuine reviews. Never offer a customer anything to take a real review down.
How do you know if marketing is working?
Track where each enquiry came from before you judge any channel. For search, that means call and form tracking on the website, the calls and website clicks your Google Business Profile reports, and enquiry forms set up as key events in GA4. For everything else, add a "how did you hear about us?" question to your booking form and ask it on the phone. After two or three months, compare the cost of each channel with the jobs it brought in.
Every question here appeared in Google's suggestions: the first seven for small business SEO topics (checked 14 September 2026), the last two for reviews and marketing (checked 5 October 2026).
