Which Stafford?

Three Staffords tied in one knot

Type Stafford into Google and you get Staffordshire bull terriers, Staffordshire University, Stafford in Texas and the UK, and Sir Stafford Cripps, before anything in Brisbane. Even "stafford restaurants" suggests Winnipeg and Virginia.

The district was known as Happy Valley until a public move in 1885 to 1886 adopted the name of the English county of Staffordshire, so the clash is built into the name. Locals add "qld" or "brisbane", as in "stafford cafes brisbane", so use Stafford QLD 4053 in your profile and "Stafford, Brisbane" in page titles. Stafford Heights shares the postcode, so name it too if you serve it.

From Happy Valley

Tannery, trams and a shopping centre

Stafford began as Happy Valley, known for dairies, tanneries and quarries along Kedron Brook. In 1886 a post office and a school in Collier Street opened under the Stafford name, and in 1940 a branch tram line from Lutwyche Road opened to a terminus on Stafford Road near Clifford Street.

Just after the war the Queensland Housing Commission built an estate near the terminus, and in 1948 to 1949 a three-storey brick state school went up on Stafford Road; it is now on the Queensland Heritage Register. In 1984 Gibson's tannery site on Stafford Road became the Stafford City shopping centre. History like this gives you landmarks people know, such as "near the old school" or "just past Stafford City".

Stafford City

One big centre on Stafford Road

Stafford City, at 400 Stafford Road, is the suburb's main shopping centre, with Hoyts cinemas inside. It opened in 1984 on the old Gibson's tannery site; before that, the local shops sat along the Stafford Road strip at the tram terminus.

Google's suggestions show how people use it: "stafford city shopping centre directory" comes up, and so do the map, opening hours, doctors and even a justice of the peace. If you trade inside, put Stafford City and your shop number in your profile. If you're on Stafford Road nearby, say how far you are from the centre. For the larger centre further north, see SEO in Chermside.

Parks and clubs

The brook, the bikeway and weekend footy

The Kedron Brook bikeway, opened in 1988, runs from Sparkes Hill in the west to Hickey Park at the other end. Keith Payne Park, near the old tram terminus, was improved and named in 1965 after Keith Payne, one of four Australians awarded the Victoria Cross in Vietnam.

The brook is a draw in its own right: "kedron brook bikeway" and "kedron brook dog park" both come up in Google's suggestions, "kedron brook running festival" brings its own crowd, and "hickey park wilston grange" shows people looking up the ground by club. A cafe, bike shop or vet near the bikeway can mention it in directions, and sponsoring a local team can put your name on the club's own site.

Around 4053

The suburbs around 4053, and how customers get here

Stafford covers 3.4 square kilometres, with Stafford Heights to the north, Alderley to the south and Everton Park wrapping the west; the compass shows the rest.

Stafford has no train station of its own. On Census day 52.5% of working residents drove to work and 4.7% took a bus, almost three times the Queensland rate, so parking and the nearest bus stop both belong in your directions. Google's suggestions include trips like "stafford to brisbane airport" and from Stafford Heights to Chermside. List the suburbs you serve and give the busiest their own page.

For trades working out of 4053

Paying for shared leads, and missing calls on the tools

Trades and home services working the streets between Kedron Brook and Stafford Heights hit two problems again and again.

Docket A · lead cost

You paid for an enquiry three other tradies also got

Lead marketplaces often sell one job request to several businesses, so it goes to whoever rings first or quotes lowest. Judge them by the cost of each job you win, not each lead: add up a quarter's spend and divide it by the jobs you actually booked from it. If the number hurts, keep the marketplace as a top-up and put the steady effort into channels that send enquiries to you alone: your Google profile, a page for each service you do around Stafford, Stafford Heights and Everton Park, and reviews from finished jobs.

Docket B · response time

The phone rings while you're up a ladder

A caller who hits voicemail usually rings the next listing. Set up a missed-call text that replies within a minute with a link to your quote form, keep your Google hours honest, and say on your website when you call back, such as the same business day before 5pm. Only claim 24/7 if someone really answers at 2am. Ask for the job type, suburb and timeframe on the form, so you can tell a price check from a real job.

Stafford questions

What Stafford searchers want to know

How much does SEO cost for a Stafford business?

Stafford plans start at $500 a month for one location, rise to $900 when you add Stafford Heights, Everton Park or Kedron, and start at $1,500 for competitive categories, with no lock-in. Our article on SEO costs in Australia explains what goes into agency pricing.

What is the postcode for Stafford QLD?

4053. Google's suggestions pair it with Stafford Heights as well, so if you serve both suburbs, name both. Write Stafford QLD 4053 in full on your profile and website.

I run my trade from home in Stafford. Will my address show on Google?

It doesn't have to. If you travel to customers, you're a service-area business: you verify the profile with your real address, then hide it and list the suburbs you work in, such as Stafford, Stafford Heights and Everton Park. Customers see your service area, never your house. Don't use a virtual office or a PO box to get a "business" address; those are a common reason profiles get suspended. Expect to rank best close to home, and use service pages and reviews from jobs further out to reach beyond that.

Is Stafford north Brisbane?

Yes. Queensland Places puts it about 8 kilometres north of central Brisbane, with Kedron Brook along its southern border. Its neighbours include Stafford Heights, Kedron, Gordon Park and Everton Park.

How far is Stafford from the Brisbane CBD?

About 8 kilometres north of the city centre. Translink's timetable data shows no train station inside Stafford itself, so customers usually come by car or bus; mention parking and the nearest main road in your directions.

Which council is Stafford in?

Brisbane City Council. Council's ward list puts Stafford in Marchant Ward, with part of it in McDowall Ward, and council matters such as permits and signage go through Brisbane City Council.

What's at Stafford City shopping centre?

Stafford City is at 400 Stafford Road, with Hoyts cinemas and a JP service listed on its website. It opened in 1984 on the old Gibson's tannery site. People search it for its directory, map, opening hours and doctors.

Is Stafford Heights the same as Stafford?

No. Stafford Heights is a separate suburb to the north, though Google's suggestions show it with the same 4053 postcode. Treat them as two suburbs in your service area and on your pages.
