SEO for Richmond businesses, one street at a time

Nobody in Richmond searches for "Richmond" and stops there. They search for Swan Street pubs, Bridge Road shops and Victoria Street pho. Boltly works on those street-level searches and the map beside them. You get a monthly report and can stop any month.

The short answer

Three strips, a dozen rivals each

Richmond has three separate tram-served shopping strips, Swan Street, Bridge Road and Victoria Street, so a dozen businesses often sell the same thing within a short walk of each other. The one that shows up first on the map, with current hours and recent reviews, usually gets the visit.

In Richmond that comes down to a Business Profile pinned to the right strip, a page for each service you sell, reviews that mention the street, and a mobile site quick enough to use at a tram stop.

Searched by street

Each Richmond strip has its own search, and its own tram

A diner types "Swan Street restaurants". A shopper types "Bridge Road dress shops". Someone after a bowl of noodles types "Victoria Street pho". Each search has its own winners, and a website that only says "Richmond" can miss all of them.

The fix is easy to describe and slow to do well. Your Google Business Profile sits at your real street address with the right categories. Your website names your street, the nearest tram stop and landmarks such as Dimmeys or the station. Trading across several strips? Give each its own page, not a line on the home page.

Our local SEO work in Richmond matches your wording to what people type on each street.

Beside the stadiums

Next door to the MCG, which changes who is searching

The MCG sits in Yarra Park, just over Richmond's western edge. The ground's own guide puts Richmond station 850 metres away, past Punt Road Oval to the Shane Warne Stand, with Jolimont the closer station on the north side. Tram 70 runs along Swan Street with a stop at Olympic Boulevard for the sports precinct. On a big game day, crowds who don't know the side streets arrive phone in hand.

Before the game

  • dinner near the mcg
  • pub swan street

Venues that show current hours, a booking link and event-day menus win these searches.

After the final siren

  • bars open now richmond
  • late night food
  • tram to city

"Open now" searches reward a listing whose hours are correct tonight, not last season.

Monday morning

  • physio richmond
  • dry cleaner bridge road

Then locals take over, searching by service, so service pages carry the week.

Searches shown are examples of the kinds of queries each moment brings, not measured data. Venue and transport details from the MCG's Get to the MCG page and the Transport Victoria route 70 page, read 4 October 2026.

What changed in 2026

Three train lines stopped coming through Richmond

The Metro Tunnel opened on 30 November 2025, and the Big Switch on 2 February 2026 moved the Cranbourne, Pakenham and Sunbury lines into it full time, so those trains no longer run through Richmond. The MCG's travel guide now lists Lilydale, Belgrave, Alamein, Glen Waverley, Frankston and Sandringham trains at Richmond, plus Werribee, Laverton and Williamstown trains running direct from the west.

Near the station, that changes who walks past: fewer commuters from the south-east, more from the west. If your trade leaned on Pakenham and Cranbourne passengers, watch the calls, direction requests and clicks in your Business Profile, and put more weight on searches from people who choose to come to you.

Cremorne, next door

Cremorne's old factories bring two kinds of customer

Cremorne, Richmond's neighbour to the south-west, grew up around factories its workers could walk to. Victorian Places notes that several still stand and are heritage listed, and the register includes the former Bryant and May complex on Church Street, the Richmond Maltings and the Nylex sign above them on Gough Street.

Cremorne's workers are a weekday market for Richmond: lunch on Swan Street, a gym before work, a physio after it. Firms selling to other businesses face a different search, because the buyer could be anywhere in Australia.

Who lives here

A suburb of renters and apartments, always meeting new customers

More than half of Richmond's homes are flats or apartments and more than half are rented. People move in all the time, and a newcomer has no favourite cafe, dentist or mechanic yet.

They find one by searching, so the first result with recent reviews is worth more here than in a suburb where families stay for decades. The Census shows a young crowd (median age 34), 43.1% of workers in professional jobs, and Vietnamese as the most common language at home after English.

Around Richmond

Eight neighbours, one short tram ride away

If you serve the suburbs around Richmond, each can earn its own page, so a customer in Collingwood or Burnley finds you as easily as one on Bridge Road.

Five other Richmonds compete for the same name

Australia Post lists Richmond in New South Wales (2753), South Australia (5033), Tasmania (7025) and two in Queensland (4740 and 4822), as well as Richmond VIC 3121. A booking engine or directory that only stores "Richmond" can send a customer or a courier to the wrong state. Write Richmond VIC 3121 in your profile, footer, page titles and every directory listing. In your directions, add a landmark no other Richmond has, such as the MCG or the tram stop on your street.

Questions Richmond owners ask

Asked on the three Richmond strips

How long does SEO take to work for a Richmond business?

It varies. Google's own starter guide on SEO puts the range anywhere from a few hours to several months after a change. Fixing hours, categories and the map pin can show quickly; ranking for contested searches such as restaurants on Swan Street or shops on Bridge Road is slower.

How much should a Richmond business budget for SEO?

For one location the Starter plan is $500 a month; Growth, at $900, suits a business competing across Richmond and the suburbs nearby; and Performance, from $1,500, covers crowded fields such as hospitality groups and online stores. None has a setup fee or fixed term.

Is SEO worth it for a small business in Richmond?

Usually. With 54.7% of homes rented, newcomers with no favourite local keep arriving, and three busy strips bring passing searches too. If almost all your work comes from a few long-standing referrers, a small Starter plan or a one-off listing clean-up may be enough, and we will say so.

Do I need to be on Google Maps to rank locally in Richmond?

For local searches, yes. Most searches for a service or venue in Richmond show a map with a handful of businesses before the ordinary results, and those come from Google Business Profiles. Google's help page names relevance, distance and prominence as the main factors in local results, so we make sure your profile is complete, accurate and backed by real reviews.

How do MCG and AAMI Park event days affect SEO for a Richmond business?

They bring visitors who don't know the area and search on the way in and out. The walk from Richmond station and the tram 70 stop at Olympic Boulevard put Swan Street businesses in the path of searches for food, drinks and parking. Keep your hours and menus current, name the nearby venues on your pages, and make booking easy from a phone.

How can a Victoria Street restaurant stand out when so many serve similar food?

Be specific. Victoria Street has long been a largely Vietnamese strip, so "Vietnamese restaurant" alone puts you among dozens of others. Name your signature dishes on your menu page and in your profile, use photos of the actual food, answer every review, and keep late-night hours accurate. Google can only match a search for a particular dish if you have written that dish down.

Our Search Console shows more impressions but fewer clicks. Has our SEO stopped working?

Not necessarily. Look at the queries behind it: if your average position is steady while impressions rise and clicks fall on 'how' and 'what' questions, people are often getting the answer on the results page, for example in an AI summary. Pew Research found in July 2025 that users clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits where an AI summary appeared, against 15% where none did. Searches for a booking, a menu or a service on your street tend to hold up better, so judge the work by calls, bookings and direction requests rather than sessions.

Years ago we bought a cheap backlink package. Could it still be hurting us?

It might be, so check rather than guess. Ask whoever sold it for the full list of links, then open the Manual actions report in Search Console, which shows any action Google has taken. Google's spam policies treat buying links for ranking purposes as link spam. If there's no manual action, the usual course is to stop buying links and earn real local ones: suppliers, associations, local news and events you take part in.

Do you only work with businesses based in Richmond?

No. Boltly is a Melbourne-based business working with clients across Australia, including next door in Cremorne, Abbotsford and Collingwood. Every account runs month to month.

Is Swan Street in Richmond or Cremorne?

Check your address. On the Victorian Heritage Register, Swan Street buildings such as the old Richmond South Post Office at 90-92 and Dimmeys at 140-160 are listed as Cremorne, while the strip further east is Richmond. Use the suburb on your official address in your Business Profile, then mention Swan Street and Richmond station in your description so both searches find you.
