SEO for Coogee businesses between the strip and the sand

Coogee has a beach, ocean pools and a busy run of cafes and clinics on Coogee Bay Road, with swimmers, walkers and diners searching as they go. Google's suggestions show what they want: restaurants with a view, a massage on Coogee Bay Road, a drink on the Pavilion rooftop. Boltly works on the Google profile, pages and reviews that win those searches, with no lock-in.

Coogee by the numbers, read for search

Coogee is young, professional and mostly renting. At the 2021 Census the median age was 35, 54.5% of homes were rented, 79.9% were apartments, and 62.9% of working residents were professionals or managers, against 40.4% across NSW. Hospitals and higher education both employ residents well above the state rate (5.8% and 3.3%, against 4.2% and 1.3%).

A Coogee business needs a Google Business Profile that answers the beach-day questions before anyone rings (hours, parking, walk-ins, the view), a page for each service, new reviews every month and a site that loads on a phone held in a wet hand.

The strip

Google's suggestions for Coogee Bay Road read like a shop directory

Type "coogee bay road" and Google offers "massage", "medical centre", "restaurants", "pizza", "nails" and "shops". Physios are searched by street too, with "dudley street" and "coogee bay road" both suggested.

Street-level searches like these are easier to win than "coogee" on its own, so put the street in your address and on your service pages, and say exactly where on it you are.

Baths and rock pools

Ocean pools and baths give people another reason to visit

Coogee Beach has a rock pool at each end: Giles Baths, a natural pool at the north end, and the Ross Jones Memorial Pool, built in 1947 beside the surf club at the south. A few minutes south along the Coastal Walkway are McIver's Ladies Baths, which Randwick City Council describes as the last remaining women-only seawater pool in Australia, and Wylie's Baths, set up in 1907. Swimmers, walkers and families come for them, then look for coffee or food on the way home.

Google's top suggestions for the suburb itself are the beach, the Pavilion, the Coogee Bay Hotel and the walk to Bondi, so a cafe, physio or surf shop near the sand should name the beach or the walk on its profile, with accurate hours and current photos.

Diners search with the filters already built in

Google's suggestions for "coogee restaurants" add "dinner", "lunch", "with a view", "italian", "open now" and "with a view on the water". For the Coogee Pavilion, people ask about the "rooftop", "menu", "happy hour", "kids area" and "dress code".

Each of those words is a question your listing can answer, and the panel shows what each one needs.

Postcards

Where Coogee residents were born

Just over half of Coogee residents (56.4%) were born in Australia, and 79.0% speak only English at home.

The birthplace mix is unusual for Sydney: 9.9% of residents were born in England and 4.5% in Ireland, against 2.9% and 0.3% across NSW. Spanish, French and Portuguese are the most common languages after English. With most homes rented, new arrivals keep choosing a local physio, cafe or hairdresser, and reviews help them pick.

Getting to Coogee

No train and no light rail, so directions matter

Coogee is about 7 kilometres south-east of the Sydney GPO in a straight line, in the City of Randwick, postcode 2034. The light rail stops short of it: the L2 ends at Randwick and the L3 at Juniors Kingsford, so visitors come by bus, car, bike or on foot. At the 2021 Census, 4.2% of working residents went to work by bus, more than four times the NSW rate.

On the ABS 2021 boundaries Coogee touches only Clovelly to the north, Randwick to the west and South Coogee to the south. Clear parking and bus notes on your profile save customers a phone call. There is also a Coogee in Western Australia, which Google mixes into physio and restaurant suggestions, so write Coogee NSW or 2034 in your listings.

Map results favour nearby businesses, so you can reach Clovelly, Randwick and South Coogee customers without pretending to be there. See our pages on SEO in Randwick, SEO in Bondi and SEO in Bondi Junction.

Coogee owners' questions

How long before SEO results show in Coogee?

There's no fixed timetable. Google's SEO starter guide says some changes register within hours and others take months. Dining and health are the busiest categories in Coogee, so a restaurant on the beachfront will usually move more slowly than a niche service with few local rivals.

Is there a lock-in contract?

No. Every Boltly plan runs month to month. We'd rather keep you with results you can see in the monthly report than with a contract.

Delivery apps take a big cut of our orders. Can search bring people to order from us directly?

It can win back some of them. People who already know you search your name, and if an app listing comes up first, that's where they order. Put an order or booking link on your Google profile and site, match the shop's menu and prices, and make your own ordering page the one that ranks for your name plus Coogee. Leave the apps to find people who've never heard of you, give regulars a reason to order direct (pickup on the way home from the beach), and keep the customer details an app would hold.

Do you work with businesses in Randwick, Clovelly and Maroubra?

Yes. Coogee only borders Clovelly, Randwick and South Coogee, and customers cross those lines all the time, so a page for each suburb you serve makes sense. Maroubra is further south; we would add it only if you work there. Boltly does all of this remotely from Melbourne.

People now ask Google long questions, like a quiet cafe near the beach with a kids' menu. How do we show up?

Write those details where Google can read them. Google says its AI Mode and AI Overviews handle longer, multi-part questions and draw on the same ranking systems as ordinary results, with no special markup needed. So say on your site and profile whether you have a kids' menu, highchairs, outdoor tables, a view, a dog-friendly courtyard or a quiet back room, and when you're least busy. Reviews that mention those things help too.

We changed our menu link and photos, and now parts of our Google profile have disappeared. Why?

Google reviews edits before they go live, so a change can sit pending for a while or be rejected with little explanation. Look for a pending or rejected notice and confirm the profile is still verified. Make one change at a time and wait for it to show; changing name, category and address in one sitting is the usual trigger for a re-check. Reviews can also be held back by Google's spam filters, with no button to restore them, so keep asking every customer.

Is SEO worth it for a small business in a beach suburb?

It depends on your margins. If your trade relies on visitors and new renters finding you, it probably is. Work out how many extra bookings a month would cover the plan ($500 on Starter) before you start, and judge it against the monthly report.
