SEO for Mackay businesses that sell to the mines and the suburbs
Coal mining is the biggest industry of employment for people who live in Mackay: 3,477 residents, or 8.8% of workers, at the 2021 Census, against 0.4% nationally. Much of that work is a long drive inland, in the Isaac region's mining towns.
So a Mackay workshop or contractor often has two customers: a household in North Mackay and a site buyer in Moranbah, 195 km away. Boltly builds your search presence for both, working remotely from Melbourne.

Coal is the biggest employer, even in town
The 2021 Census counted 80,455 people in the Mackay urban centre. For the people working, coal mining came first among industries at 8.8%, ahead of hospitals at 5.2%, and technicians and trades workers were the biggest occupation group at 19.5%, against 12.9% for Australia.
Queensland Places records the export coal port at Hay Point, built in 1971 for the open-cut mines at Goonyella, about 150 km south-west, and the outer harbour has loaded bulk sugar since 1957. Inland, in the Isaac council area that takes in Moranbah, Dysart, Clermont and Nebo, more than a quarter of workers are in coal.
For search, that means two jobs. The household side is ordinary local SEO: profile, suburb, reviews. The site side is closer to business-to-business marketing, and a website written only for households leaves the site buyer with nothing to read.

A household and a site buyer search differently
The household finds you on the map and rings; the site buyer often shortlists from your website before anyone picks up a phone. Here are one diesel and hydraulics workshop's two customers side by side.
- Who searches
- The owner of the ute or the tractor, on a phone.
- What they type
- The job and the town: "diesel mechanic mackay", often with a suburb.
- What they check
- Your place on the map, star rating, opening hours and whether you can fit them in.
- What wins the call
- A complete profile with the right suburb and 4740, recent reviews and a phone that's answered.
- Who searches
- A maintenance planner, a supervisor or a procurement officer, often at a desk.
- What they type
- The capability and the place: the service plus a town such as Moranbah, or the words "mine site".
- What they check
- Whether you've done this kind of work, what tickets and insurance you hold, and how fast you can get there.
- What wins the shortlist
- A capability page that answers those questions in writing, with a named contact.
of business buyers in Gartner's survey, published 25 June 2025, said they would prefer to buy without talking to a sales rep.
Paying for shared household leads that rarely become jobs
On the household side, plenty of Mackay trades top up their work through lead marketplaces, where the same enquiry goes to several businesses and the fastest or cheapest call wins. Work out what each won job actually costs you: everything you spent on leads in a quarter, divided by the jobs you got from them. If that number is ugly, keep the marketplace as a top-up and build the channels that send enquiries to you alone: a complete Business Profile in the right suburb, reviews from real jobs and a page for each service.

What a capability page needs
A capability page is the website version of the capability statement many contractors already send out as a PDF. On a normal web page, Google can read it and show it for the searches a site buyer makes.
The outline on the left is the order we'd use. Keep it factual and specific: "we rebuild hydraulic cylinders up to a stated size in our Mackay workshop" says more than a paragraph about quality and safety. If you can't name a client, describe the job instead. Never invent a project, a client or a number to fill a gap.
Port and marine contractors fit here too: "mackay harbour engineering" is one of the city's own Google suggestions. Write one capability page for each kind of work you want to win, and link them from the home page. For trades who mainly serve households, our page on SEO for tradies covers the other half.
The household side: one postcode for most of the city
Australia Post lists 52 localities under 4740, among them West, East and North Mackay, Mount Pleasant, Ooralea, Slade Point and Mackay Harbour. With one postcode covering that much, the suburb name is what tells Google, and a customer, where you are.
In the centre, people search by street and landmark: "victoria street mackay shops", "caneland central parking", "sydney street markets mackay". If you trade nearby, give your street number and one landmark people already know, and keep Sunday hours accurate, because "mackay restaurants open sunday" is a real search too.

When a storm or a flood closes you for a few days
If weather shuts the workshop or cuts the road inland, the first thing customers do is check if you're open. Use special hours or mark the profile temporarily closed only for the days you are actually shut, post a short update saying when you'll reopen, and put the same line at the top of your website. The day you reopen, change it back and post that you're open; a profile left on "temporarily closed" keeps turning people away after the water has gone. For grants and recovery help, go to the official disaster assistance sites rather than anyone selling a fix.

Who should own my Google Business Profile and website, me or the agency?
You. The business should be the primary owner of its Business Profile and the account holder for its domain, website hosting, Search Console and analytics; an agency, including us, should be added as a manager. Ask for that in writing before you sign. If a past provider set things up under its own accounts, get ownership transferred now, while everyone is still talking.
Does Boltly have an office in Mackay?
No. Boltly is based in Melbourne and does the work remotely: audits, profile changes, page edits and a monthly report by email or video call. You can reach us on 0468 147 271.
