SEO for Dee Why businesses, from the beachfront Strand to Pittwater Road

Dee Why has a surf beach, a lagoon, a busy stretch of Pittwater Road, one of Northern Beaches Council's three customer service centres and mostly apartment living. People search precisely, naming the beach, street or building: a beach cafe, a dentist on Oaks Avenue, a restaurant on The Strand. Boltly helps Dee Why businesses show up for those searches through the Google profile, service pages and reviews, with no lock-in.

Who searches in Dee Why, and how

Dee Why is dense, mixed and on the move. At the 2021 Census 81.9% of homes were apartments, 47.3% were rented and 51.9% of residents were born in Australia, well below the NSW figure of 65.4%. Tibetan was spoken at home by 564 residents, about 40% of the 1,392 Tibetan speakers counted in all of NSW (derived from ABS figures). With this many renters and new arrivals, people are always choosing a new GP, dentist or regular cafe.

In Dee Why the basics are a Google Business Profile with the right category, exact hours and the shop number that sets you apart in a mixed-use building, plus a page for each service, directions that name The Strand or Pittwater Road, regular reviews and a fast mobile site.

The Strand

The beachfront strip gets searched by name

Google's suggestions put The Strand at the centre of beachfront eating: "dee why restaurants the strand", "with a view" and "open now", and for the beach itself, "cafe", "restaurants", "parking" and even "cam". Council holds its Australia Day and New Year's Eve fireworks at the beach, when crowds swell.

Keep hours exact as the seasons change, post fresh photos when the menu does, and check your map pin sits on the beach side of the street.

Pittwater Road

The main road is where Dee Why books its appointments

Pittwater Road is the suburb's main commercial spine. Northern Beaches Council's Dee Why customer service centre is at 725 Pittwater Road, and people search the strip by building and street as much as by suburb.

Google's suggestions here are practical: "general practice", "medical centre", "post office", "library" and "rsl", with dental searched by street or building: "oaks avenue", "pittwater road" and "grand". An exact address with the shop number, the most precise category and a page per service win these.

Two pins for one shop: the old tenant, the old shop number

Shops on Pittwater Road and The Strand change hands, and businesses move between units, leaving listings behind: the previous tenant's profile still pinned to your door, a copy of your business at the old shop number, or one an earlier agency made that nobody can log into. Reviews get split and Google has two answers for one place. Google's guidelines allow one profile per location, so the job is to end up with exactly one.

  1. Find every copy. Search your name, old name and street address on Google Maps and note each listing's link.
  2. Take ownership of yours. If someone else holds a copy of your business, request ownership through Google; the current owner gets three days to reply before you may be able to claim it.
  3. Close what isn't you. A former tenant's listing at your address should be reported as closed or moved through Maps' suggest-an-edit, not taken over.
  4. Keep one, then tidy. Point your website, directories and signage at the profile you keep, with the full shop number.

Lagoon, headland and beach

Nature on both sides of the shops

Dee Why's town centre sits between a surf beach, a lagoon that council signs as a wildlife refuge, and Stony Range, a botanic garden on 3.3 hectares of sandstone escarpment that was a disused quarry in the 1950s. Walkers and swimmers pass the cafes on the way and search for breakfast as they go.

Whose number is on your listing?

Some agencies count calls (wave 5) by swapping your number for a tracking number they rent. When you leave, that number goes dead, along with every call from an old directory listing or flyer. Google's guidelines say the profile's phone number must be under the business's direct control. Our rule: the number on your profile, website and signage is yours. To count search calls separately, use a tracking number registered in your name, keep your real number on the profile as an additional line, and leave directories on the real one.

Many languages

A beach suburb with a global mix

After English, the most common languages at home in Dee Why are Portuguese, Nepali, Tibetan, Mandarin and Spanish, and the top overseas birthplaces are England, Brazil, China, Nepal and India.

If your team speaks one of those languages, say so on your profile and website. Where 36.0% of households use a language other than English, that's a real reason to choose you, and most listings leave it out.

Along the coast

The suburb sits between Collaroy and Curl Curl

Dee Why is about 15 kilometres north-east of the Sydney GPO in a straight line, postcode 2099, in the Northern Beaches Council area. On the ABS 2021 boundaries it borders Collaroy to the north-east, Cromer and Narraweena inland, Brookvale to the south-west and North Curl Curl to the south, with the Tasman Sea to the east.

Buses matter here: 7.9% of working residents took a bus to work on Census day 2021, against 0.9% across NSW. Name your nearest stop in your directions. Google also suggests "northern beaches seo" and "seo northern beaches sydney", because many businesses here compete across the whole peninsula, not only the 2099.

Google weighs distance in map results, so a Dee Why business can also reach customers in Collaroy, Brookvale and Curl Curl. See our pages on SEO in Manly and SEO in Mosman, or our guide to what local SEO is.

Asked on the Strand

The Dee Why questions that come up most

How long does local SEO take to work?

Nobody can promise a date. Google's SEO starter guide notes that a change may take effect within hours or only after several months. In Dee Why, GPs, dentists and beachfront cafes have plenty of established listings, so they usually move more slowly than a specialist service with few rivals nearby.

Can I rank across the Northern Beaches, not just Dee Why?

Yes, within limits. The map favours businesses near the searcher, so a Dee Why shop will rarely show for someone in Palm Beach. Wider reach comes from a page for each area you actually serve and reviews from customers there. Boltly does this remotely from Melbourne; we have no office on the beaches.

Why doesn't my business show up on Google Maps?

Check verification and the primary category first. In Dee Why, a common extra cause is the address: many businesses sit in mixed-use buildings on Pittwater Road or The Strand, and a missing shop number or a pin on the apartment lobby confuses both Google and customers. Then compare your reviews and photos with the businesses that do show.

Do I need a website if I have a Google Business Profile?

A profile alone can bring calls, but a website gives Google and customers far more to go on. A Dee Why physio with one page for sports injuries and another for post-surgery rehab can appear for searches the profile alone would never match.

How do I choose the right Google Business Profile category?

Pick the most specific primary category for what you are, then a few accurate secondary ones. Google's suggestions show Dee Why people search "general practice", "medical centre" and "orthodontist" separately, so a clinic should choose the category that matches what it mainly does, not the broadest one. More on this in our Google Business Profile guide.

Someone rang saying they're from Google and can fix my ranking. Is it real?

Treat it as a sales call until proven otherwise. Google does make automated calls to check details such as opening hours, but its Business Profile help says Google never asks for payment, card details or passwords, and a caller asking for money to keep you on Google isn't Google. Its guide to hiring an SEO adds that Google ads don't affect organic results, that nobody can guarantee a #1 ranking, and to be wary of anyone claiming a special relationship with Google. Don't hand over a login on the phone; for an audit, Google suggests read access to Search Console only.

What happens in the first month of SEO?

We audit your profile, website and the Dee Why businesses ahead of you, fix the quick items such as category, hours, shop number and photos, and agree a plan for pages and reviews, with a starting report to measure later months against.
