SEO for Manly businesses, from the wharf to the surf
Manly has two shores. The ferry lands on the harbour side and the surf breaks on the ocean side. People search each part differently: restaurants at the wharf, a pharmacy on the Corso, a table with a view. And Google keeps mixing in Manly in Queensland. Boltly, a Melbourne-based agency, helps Manly businesses get found on the right shore of the right Manly, month to month.

Three kinds of Manly searcher
Manly's searchers come in three kinds: residents, visitors staying a night or a week, and day-trippers off the ferry. The suburb sits about 10 kilometres north-east of the Sydney GPO, postcode 2095, and the 2021 Census counted 16,296 residents across 5.6 square kilometres. More than three in four homes (76.8%) were apartments, more than half were rented, and 16.3% of dwellings were empty on Census night, well above the NSW figure of 9.4%.
Many residents are renters still choosing their regulars. A Manly business serves all three groups with a Google Business Profile that says Manly NSW 2095 in full, one page per service, a steady trickle of fresh reviews, and walking directions from the wharf, the Corso or the beach.

The ferry lands on the harbour side
Sydney Ferries' F1 runs between Circular Quay and Manly Wharf, and on Census day 2021, 1.7% of working Manly residents commuted by ferry, a share that rounds to zero across NSW. For visitors the wharf is the front door.
On the F1, passengers search for today's timetable, the fare and restaurants near the wharf, so a cafe, bar or shop near the wharf should say how many minutes' walk it is, keep its hours right for the first and last ferries it relies on, and post photos that show the view, because "on the water" is a filter people add.

The street every search names
Look at what people type and one street comes up again and again: the Corso. Google completes "manly corso" with pharmacy, dental, laundry, parking, markets, food and pubs.
On a strip this short, small details decide which listing gets the tap, and the four on the Corso card are the ones we check first. Parking on the Corso is a search of its own, so name the nearest car park.

The long question typed on the ferry
Visitors don't always search in two words. On the crossing they ask whole questions: somewhere near the wharf that opens before eight, takes a pram and has a table outside. Google's guide to its generative AI features, which names AI Overviews and AI Mode, says those features draw on publicly accessible, crawlable content, so the answer has to exist on your site as text Google can read. A menu posted only as a photo or PDF can't answer it. Write the practical facts on the page itself:
- hours, including the first and last ferry you open for
- walk-ins, bookings, prams, dogs, outdoor tables
- the menu or price list as text, not only an image
- which end of the Corso, and the walk from the wharf

Beaches people name in their searches
On the ocean side, people name Queenscliff, North Steyne and Shelly Beach, the three beaches council's pages describe. North Steyne has a long promenade for strolling, jogging and riding, so foot traffic runs both ways between the Corso and the sand. Shelly Beach, around the corner, draws snorkellers and scuba divers and allows weddings from May to October.
For a surf school, board hire, cafe or physio near Shelly Beach or North Steyne, the beach name is the address people use. Google suggests restaurants with a view, cafes on the water and dog-friendly cafes, and visitors add parking to their accommodation searches. Name the beach or headland you are closest to, set weekend and holiday hours exactly, and say if you take walk-ins in boardshorts.

There is a Manly in Brisbane too
Manly, Queensland, is a suburb of the City of Brisbane, postcode 4179, about 16 kilometres east of the Brisbane GPO in a straight line. Google blends the two freely: "manly cafes brisbane" sits beside the Sydney searches, along with restaurants, accommodation and physios tagged QLD. And the top suggestion for "manly" alone is the Manly Sea Eagles, the rugby league club.
The fix is consistency. Put "Manly NSW 2095" in your page titles, footer and Business Profile, give your business schema New South Wales as its region, and mention a Sydney landmark, such as the wharf, the Corso or North Head, on each service page. If you run a business in the Queensland one, our page on SEO in Manly, Brisbane is written for that suburb.

Marketers, coders and newcomers from abroad
Manly residents work in advertising at nearly six times the NSW rate, and in computer system design, finance and accounting at two to three times. Two in three working residents were professionals or managers, and on Census day 2021, 58.9% worked from home, during a lockdown. One in nine residents was born in England, and Spanish, French and Portuguese were the most common languages at home after English.
For a Manly physio, accountant or design studio, that means service pages that answer real questions, a profile with current photos, and reviews from people who sound like them. Visitors and residents want different things from the same listing: put opening times, booking and parking up front for one, and depth on the service page for the other.

Four neighbours, two with Manly in the name
On the ABS 2021 boundaries Manly touches Fairlight, Manly Vale, North Manly and Queenscliff, all in the Northern Beaches Council area. Two of them carry "Manly" in their name, which is a second reason to write your suburb in full. A neighbour gets its own page from us only when you really work there.
Queenscliff
The northern end of the ocean beach, ten minutes' walk from the wharf by council's reckoning, with a headland tunnel to Freshwater.
Fairlight
Next door on the ABS boundaries, mainly in postcode 2094.
North Manly
Shares the Manly name but sits in postcode 2100.
Manly Vale
Another "Manly", on 2093; the full suburb name keeps Google from merging the two.

"I changed my hours and Google still shows the old ones"
This matters in Manly because visitors check opening times on the ferry. Google's help says profile changes usually show within about 10 minutes, but can take up to 30 days when an edit is held for review. Some edits come back changed because Google also takes suggestions from the public and confirms details by automated call. So we change hours well before a holiday, set special hours for public holidays instead of editing the regular ones, make one sensitive edit at a time, and check the live listing from a phone a day later. Answer any automated call from Google too: Google says those updates sit as pending for up to five working days.

Manly questions, from the wharf to the beach
How can a Manly business rank higher on Google?
Make it unmistakable that you are in Manly NSW 2095, then answer what people search for. Use the full address on a complete Google Business Profile with the most precise primary category and exact hours, give each service its own page that names the wharf, the Corso or the beach, and ask each customer for a review once the job is done. Google's Business Profile help puts local results down mainly to relevance, distance and popularity.
How much does SEO cost for a Manly business?
Starter is $500 a month for one Manly location, Growth is $900 for adding Fairlight, Queenscliff or North Manly where you really work, and Performance is $1,500 for accommodation, dining, health or several sites, with nothing up front and no minimum term.
Why does Google show Manly in Queensland for my searches?
Because Manly, Queensland, a suburb of Brisbane with postcode 4179, shares the name. Google's suggestions mix the two, from "manly cafes brisbane" to "manly accommodation qld". Write Manly NSW 2095 in your titles, footer and profile, and mention a Sydney landmark on each page.
My Google listing was suspended. What should I do first?
Find the reason before you appeal. Google's appeals tool shows the reason for the action and links the policy it says you broke, so fix that first: a name with extra words in it, an address customers can't visit, or a second listing for the same business. Then appeal once through the tool with evidence whose name and address match the profile, such as your business registration, a licence or a utility bill. Google says the evidence form must be submitted within 60 minutes of opening it, and not to create a new profile for the same business while the appeal is under review.
How long does SEO take to work in Manly?
No one can promise a date. Google's SEO starter guide says changes can take hours or several months to show. Accommodation and dining are crowded in Manly, so those categories usually take longer than a specialist with little nearby competition.
My business is in North Manly or Manly Vale. Can I list it as Manly?
No, use your real suburb. Both have their own postcodes, 2100 and 2093, and Google matches your profile to your actual address. You can still mention on your site that you serve Manly customers or are a short drive from the Corso.
Is Boltly based in Manly?
No. Boltly is a Melbourne agency with no office in Manly or anywhere else in Sydney. We work with Manly businesses by phone, email and video.
