Illustration of how a local result is chosen, not a map of any real place.
Google weighs three things, and only one of them is distance
Google's help page on local ranking names relevance, distance and prominence, and you can work on two of them directly.
"Local results are mainly based on relevance, distance, and popularity."
Google Business Profile Help, Tips to improve your local ranking on Google, read 3 October 2026- RelevanceHow well your profile and pages match the search: right categories, services named plainly, pages about the places you serve.
- DistanceHow far you are from the searcher or the place they named. You can't move your shop, so the other two carry the work.
- ProminenceHow well known and trusted you are: reviews, links, mentions and listings.
Every Boltly city page, sorted by the first digit of your postcode
The first digit of an Australian postcode tells you the state, so find yours, then your city. Each page covers that market's own suburbs, industries and competition.
Same town name, different state
Plenty of Australian place names repeat across states, and Newcastle also exists in England and Northern Ireland. People add a state to sort it out: type "google maps newcastle" and "nsw" is one of the first endings offered. If your town or suburb has a twin, customers and Google can both pick the wrong one.
The fix is dull and it works. Write suburb, state and postcode together everywhere your address appears: Business Profile, contact page, directory listings and page titles. Mention a landmark or main road that only exists in your version of the place. Then check every directory has you in the right state, because one wrong listing gets copied. A Newcastle business, for instance, can write Newcastle NSW with its postcode on the profile and name a local main road on its contact page, so nobody mistakes it for the English city.
Postcode ranges for street addresses by state and territory, with the boundaries spot-checked in Australia Post's postcode search on 4 October 2026. PO Box and large-volume ranges are not shown. Google autocomplete for "google maps newcastle", checked 5 October 2026.
The method stays the same. The amount of work does not.
A plumber in Sydney and a plumber in Dubbo both need a strong Google Business Profile, reviews and pages about the places they serve. How many rivals already do that well decides how far each campaign has to go.
Win on depth
- Many strong competitors in every trade, often with years of reviews
- A page for each suburb cluster you serve
- Quality links and steady new content
- Results build over months, and hold once earned
Win on basics done well
- Fewer rivals keeping their listings current and complete
- A tidy profile, genuine reviews and clear local pages often go a long way
- Reach into the towns customers travel in from
- Smaller campaigns can lead the map
Why some places get a page and many do not
A place gets its own page only when people search for SEO there and we have something specific to say. Google's spam policies warn against doorway pages (one page per suburb with only the name changed), which can drag down a whole site.
In 2026 we removed more than a hundred thin suburb and niche pages with little search demand and redirected each one to the page that covers that area. What remains is 34 city pages, plus suburb pages where the local market has real demand.
None of this limits where we work. A suburb without a page on our site gets the same work: a well-built profile, pages on your own website for the areas you serve, and the reviews and listings that tie you to your patch. Our guide to what local SEO is explains how that works.

Start with one area, then widen the circle
Most campaigns start with your home area and widen only when the monthly report shows the last step working: a suburb cluster next in a capital, nearby towns in a regional centre. For the Sydney plumber above, that might be neighbouring suburbs; for the Dubbo plumber, the towns around Dubbo.

What local SEO costs, in any postcode
Local SEO starts at $500 a month, and the quote follows how crowded your market is, whatever your postcode. Plans run month to month with no setup fee, and you keep everything we build.
One location
from $500A focused local campaign for a single shop, clinic or trade.
Across a city
from $900Competing across a city and its suburbs, with a page for each area you serve.
Competitive fields
from $1,500Crowded categories, several locations and online stores.
Why one SEO quote says $300 and the next says $3,000
Two quotes can use the word "SEO" for very different amounts of work. Compare what you can count:
- HoursHow many specialist hours a month does the price buy?
- DeliverablesWhich pages, fixes and profile changes will be done, by name?
- PeopleWho does the work, and can you speak to them?
- ExitWhat notice is needed to stop, and what stays yours when you leave?
A fee too small to pay for a skilled person's hours buys very little work, which is why we publish three starting prices instead of a hidden range.

Local SEO near you, answered
Do you do SEO near me?
Very likely: Boltly works with businesses in all eight capitals and 26 other cities and regional centres. The work is done online, so any Australian town gets the same local SEO, set up for its own suburbs and keywords.
What is local SEO?
Local SEO gets a business into the map and top results when people nearby search for what it sells. That means a complete Google Business Profile, genuine reviews, consistent listings and pages about the places you serve.
Do I need an SEO agency in my own city?
No. The agency's postcode doesn't change the result. What matters is whether they understand your market: the suburbs your customers live in, the competitors on your street and how people there search.
If the agency isn't in my city, who actually does the work?
Ask any agency, local or not, who will make the changes to your site and profile, whether you can talk to that person, and how many other clients they look after. Some pass the work to freelancers or overseas teams without saying so. Boltly is a Melbourne-based business, and the senior specialist who runs your account does the work and takes your monthly call.
How much does SEO cost in Australia?
Boltly plans start from $500 a month for one location, $900 across a city and $1,500 for crowded categories and online stores, all month to month.
Can you rank one business in more than one city?
Yes. We give each location or service area its own page and keep your profiles and listings consistent, so the branches don't compete with each other. Our multi-location SEO service covers it.
Why is there no page for my suburb on your site?
We only keep a separate page where people search for SEO help in that place and we have something specific to say about it. Smaller suburbs sit under their city page, and your work is the same either way.
How can I tell if people near me actually search for what I sell?
Type your service and town into Google and read the suggestions. Your Business Profile's Performance view lists the searches that showed it, and the Performance report in Google Search Console shows the queries and impressions your site already gets. If all three show almost nothing, put the money into a tidy profile and referrals before SEO.
Is local SEO easier in a regional town than a capital city?
Usually, yes. Regional competition is lighter, so a well-kept profile, steady reviews and clear local pages can lead the map sooner. Capitals need more depth: more pages, more reviews and quality links. The free audit shows how crowded your market is.
How long does local SEO take to work?
Google's own starter guide says some changes might take effect in a few hours and others could take several months. Fixing a broken or incomplete Business Profile is often the quickest win, while busy city searches take longer.
